Wick most of those words probably have a different meaning where i am. for example a teenie weenie is just a teenager, and bitsy means its broken apart. theres some others but they might get me a ban, even though they have different meaning here and are pretty innocent. orkney words can even have a different meaning apart from the original. take hid for example, it can mean it, over there, hide (obviously) and on some of the islands it means home. if my mum and my aunt are talking i can barely understand them, and most of the time I'm not sure if their going to fight or declare world peace. even the tone used to say some words can change the meaning. i've found people from germany and scndinavia seem to understand us better than southerner europeans but we used to be danish so i guess that has something to with it. if i was to put a vid of me speaking up i dont think many of you could understand it, lol
W Humble Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 I'm slow on the uptake; didn't realize you were posting from 'over there' :-<) I'm from the US Midwest; not southern, but very like in some ways. Northern California since I was six years old, and still have a notably mid-American accent. But that's pretty usual for CA. Back in the 'sixties when I was fighting wildfire to get through college, I had an AmerIndian crewmate, from the Washoe (NV) tribe. We were having a bull session (random conversation between males!) and usually pretty quiet, he interjected "Heck, if it weren't for you Arkies and Oakies, we Indians would still own this place!" (Arkansas and Oklahoma, oc.) Since the advent of so-called 'reality TV' and the social networking plague, I noticed that we Californians talk more like hicks (yahoos, folks from the sticks... the tules... the hinterlands... oh help!) than ever. Best, Wick Humble age 78, and counting!
Bugatti Fan Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 (edited) Local accents and colloquial words can be very confusing to others when used elsewhere. Also, I did a Bill a short while ago but with a razor saw. Not a deep cut fortunately but due to my own stupidity holding an item in my hand whilst cutting it. Usual story. Too much of a hurry and laziness on my part to get my mini vice out. I would guess that most accidents happen due to trying to take short cuts if you will excuse the pun! James2 Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 I'll never ever confuse CA glue with nose spray again... 1

It was nice when clogged up, to take a shot and within minutes be able to breath clearly again. But the rebound effect made the clogging worse and I wound up using it three times a day.? If I went out for an evening and forgot to bring some along, I couldn’t enjoy myself because I’d be obsessed with my clogged nose.? I have been totally clean now for a couple months and the nose is nowhere near as bad as when I was on the stuff. 1
Ace-Garageguy Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 (edited) I'll never again wonder why a girl I met in a bar didn't turn out to be a paragon of virtue and fidelity. EDIT: Or waste my time lookin' fer luuuuv in all the wrong places... Edited December 17, 2023 by Ace-Garageguy 1 1
bluestringer Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 Never again will I try detail painting right after using a weed eater.
W Humble Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 I'll never use compressed air to clean a finger-gun again, after getting a shot of lacquer thinner in the eyes (that I thought was emptied previously). Especially as I had to ask help of my new daughter-in-law, who thinks men are loco anyway; the thinner effects were luckily abated by the next day, but her impression... suspicions confirmed! Well, 25 years ago. Did scare me, a bit! The stuff I've gotten away with... !! Ole' Wick

Sort of like snorting Drano, but almost instant relief. I have Flonase, use it when I need it, also some things like Sinex. I fried some of my nasal membranes with peppermint oil a couple of years back. My sense of smell is returning, but I can really only smell really good or really BAD things.
W Humble Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 A veteran MD told me once (fifty years ago) that just snorting some lightly salted water was as good as any Rx; 'course some of those may have improved in that time. However, I've been shocked several times at how nasal congestion clears up, sometimes for considerable time, after a swim in a chlorinated pool! (Nice thought!) Now, about model cars... Wick

Wick I think it’s funny that salt water in a bottle is available for sale to use for clearing a stuffed up nose.

W Humble Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Actually, the old Doc demonstrated: just poured a few grains of table salt into his palm, added a bit ft tap water, and then snorted into both nostrils -- and it works pretty well! Only I had been blowing my nose (ten years old) rigorously, and it was pretty chapped; the salt didn't help that situation!! But he maintained that saline was as effective as any aftermarket spray. He was from Moosejaw, Sask. as I recall. I'll never use an electric drill to run a new wire through my top-plate, after missing the 230W lead-in from the pole by one inch! C. 1980, putting in a new HVAC. Ohhh! Wick
Bugatti Fan Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Vick's Sinex. UK equivalent to nasal sprays already mentioned.
Camaro lover Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 My prescription glasses broke so I used some dollar store reading glasses until my new prescription was ready. I will never operate power tools without my regular glasses again. I lost part of my left thumb on my table saw because my thumb was someplace different than where I thought it was. I’ll never use a shaper again without push blocks either. I lost the tips of 3 fingers on my right hand. HDF dust get quite slippery. 1
