afx Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 (edited) I'm a big Floyd fan. Thought I might start a thread where we could share all things Floyd related - favorite track/albums, rare tracks, covers etc. I'll kick thing off with one my favorites. I prefer the original album track to all the live versions I have heard to date so here we go! Edited August 24, 2021 by afx 3
JollySipper Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 JC, I'm sure you've heard this..... Primus doing "Have a Cigar". and it just so happens that I got a Floyd T-shirt the other day! 1
peteski Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 Couple of days ago I watched "Classic Albums: Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon" on PBS. What a great documentary! Lots of old footage of the band and lots of interesting tidbits I didn't know about the album and about the band. I like it so much that I wanted to see if it was available on DVD. I learned that the British "Classic Albums" series is not new (started in the nineties), and evne thisepisode was several years old. I did find it on DVD and I just bought it on eBay. Highly recommended for any Pink Floyd fan. I like most of their music, even their strange excursions. 1
1972coronet Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 (edited) As one whom prefers their earlier works --the earlier , the better-- I have to plop-down this one from 1965 : Lucy Leave , (81) Lucy Leave - 1965 - YouTube Edited August 24, 2021 by 1972coronet 2
1972coronet Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 Okay , what am I NOT doing correctly here ? Why isn't the video showing ?? What's changed ??

What works for me John is I go back to "edit" the post and hit "enter" after the link and the video appears - don't know why but it works. Sometimes nothing I try will get the video to appear, only the link. Edited August 24, 2021 by afx
Rob Hall Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 One of my favorite bands. I’ve been a fan since the mid 80s. I love a lot of their 70s and 80s work, and some of my favorites are they two albums they made without Roger Waters. The Division Bell is one of my all time favorite albums. I saw them on the last tour in ‘94, and have seen David Gilmour solo twice. Love his guitar playing. I’ve got a few t-shirts, DVDs/Blu Rays of various concerts, the neat Pulse live DVD with the LED light (after 25 years, I need to replace the battery).

Haven't heard that cover before TJ - thanks. I finally tracked down a CD copy (for a price I was willing to pay) of Les Claypool's - Frog Brigade cover of the Animals album performed live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kn66deEvUW8 Edited August 24, 2021 by afx
DPNM Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 (edited) They are my favorite band. Great first choice JC. I believe it's the only vocals Nick Mason did plus you get both Roger and David on bass. I was going to post up Have a Cigar but since TJ posted a cover I won't. It is my favorite "In your face, let's stick it to them and bite the hand that feeds us" song. Probably pretty much how the music business ran but they were the only ones to write a song about it. Showed a lot of moxie. My favorite album is the Wall. Favorite song is here (I don't know how to post videos): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soL8JK6kALc I do have some T-Shirts, a few I will try to post tomorrow. They are a bit uncommon I think. I did see them live twice in the Burgh, post Roger. Edited August 24, 2021 by DPNM
89AKurt Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 One of my top favorite bands! Dark Side Of The Moon is still my favorite album (yes I'm bloody old, even though I got cassette tapes). I had recently been starting my Saturdays with favorite music, using YT, though Spotify is a very good alternative if you wish to sign up. I've even sung The Wall at karaoke, switching out "will you call me" with "will you text me." Attended two concerts, this was before the internet, had to go to Phoenix and wait in line to buy tickets. When we were coming back home after the second concert, the radio was playing Breathe, just seconds after "... run, rabbit run ..." we saw a Jackrabbit run across the highway, my friend and I were like "wow man." ? It was much later that I found out Nick Mason is a car nut, and the story with his GTO is interesting. This is still a favorite to chill with:

afx Posted August 24, 2021 Author Posted August 24, 2021 (edited) Live at Pompeii is a great concert film - recommended if you have yet to see it. The 2002 DVD includes early studio takes of a few DSOTM tracks. Edited August 24, 2021 by afx 1
TonyK Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 Always enjoy listening to Pink Floyd except for one song; Money. The radio used to play that song to death and to this day I can't listen to it. Any other song I'll gladly listen to but not that one. Appreciate the talented playing even more these days as you hear the classic technology used back then.

Instead, he mentions what I believe to be an alias that he brings up on Frizzle Fry at the end of "Groundhog's Day".....
1972coronet Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 Their first album , Piper at the Gates of Dawn , sounds its best in mono . I understand that A Saucerful of Secrets was released in a remastered mono mix as well ( have heard some tracks from the mono edit , and they sound so much better than the stereo mixes ) , but I haven't found one yet , at least in C.D. format . When I was 5 years old (1975) , I watched Live at Pompeii on PBS . I was stunned ! All of that volcanic activity and ruin coupled with gorgeous performances of 'A Saucerful of Secrets' and'Echoes' (amongst others) was a delight .
afx Posted August 24, 2021 Author Posted August 24, 2021 (edited) Documentary on the band. Edited August 24, 2021 by afx

But.... but the remake of The Italian Job used it, which fit perfectly. I have several other songs that I think suck, that the radio always plays, nice to have a remote.
Snake45 Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 I only own Dark Side of the Moon on vinyl, and that only because my summer of '74 girlfriend (who bore a certain resemblance to Jill St. John, just to paint the picture) told me once it was her favorite make-out music, "especially the one about us and them." I stopped and bought it on my way home from our date that night, and had it loaded up and ready to go for our next date. Wow, she wasn't kidding. She REALLY dug it! To this day I can't hear any song from that album without thinking fondly of her. Personally, I always thought Savoy Brown's Lookin' In was the ultimate make-out album. Ironically, I only bought the album because of the way-cool Jack Davis cover art. I'd never heard of the band before, or any of their music. Best "blind" investment I ever made.

On the song 'Comfortably Numb', you guys ever give much thought to how different the two guitar solos are? One is before the Doc administers his meds, one is after...... It's like the first one is a little hopeful and bright, the second one is more brooding and dark. 2

I have few black Pink Floyd T-shirt I bought at Walmart over the years, for less than $10 each. When I wear them, I often get compliments. Quite a few from late-teens and twenty-somethings. Good to see that generation embracing Pink Floyd (not just BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH music). Maybe there is still some hope . . .
