majel Posted November 11, 2021 Posted November 11, 2021 I've decided to do something completely different (for me) for my next build. I've never attempted something this large and intimidating. I've done a few 1/16th funny cars but never a 1/12th. I plan on doing it pretty much box stock with the addition of some braided lines. Any tips or tricks from those of you that have built this model would be appreciated. I know there's a few videos on you tube of both the Vaillant and Jagermeister build that are very helpful.
Zippi Posted November 11, 2021 Posted November 11, 2021 This should be a nice build Jim. I'll be checking in on this one. I've always heard that the Tamiya kits are top quality and would love to try one but they just don't put out anything inline with what I build.
4mula1fan Posted November 11, 2021 Posted November 11, 2021 You'll love the big scale. You can really pick out and detail the heck out of parts.
Oldmopars Posted November 11, 2021 Posted November 11, 2021 I will be watching, I have wanted to build one of these, but have yet to pull the trigger
majel Posted November 13, 2021 Author Posted November 13, 2021 Started marking and sanding the mold lines on the body tonight and ordered the Tamiya cobalt green paint today. I want to at least get the body prepped before I start on the rest of the parts.
majel Posted November 19, 2021 Author Posted November 19, 2021 Got the mold lines and ejector pin holes sanded down and getting it ready for primer. I decided to add the rivets for the rear wheel flares so I measured out the spacing and will get them drilled out before primer.
majel Posted November 21, 2021 Author Posted November 21, 2021 (edited) I got the first coat of primer on the body parts. It did its job of pointing out areas that need more work. So out came the marker again and now I have a little more body work before the second coat of primer. The other thing I learned is that I have no idea how I'm going to paint such a large body. My Tamiya paint stand doesn't spread apart far enough to hold the body. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to hold the two main body halves that must be painted inside and out. Bennyg Posted November 22, 2021 Posted November 22, 2021 I’ve got one of these too. I like where you going with this, especially the rivet detail. I saw another modeller add a rain sill on theirs. Cheers Ben
Andrew McD Posted November 22, 2021 Posted November 22, 2021 I'll be watching how this one progresses as I've had in the back of my mind to attempt a 1/12 scale.......someday.
majel Posted December 7, 2021 Author Posted December 7, 2021 Got the body painted using Tamiya Cobalt Green. The indoor pictures make the color appear darker than it really is. Started on the basic engine and drivetrain, put together all that will be painted flat aluminum and hopefully weathered lightly. Gave it a coat of Tamiya light gray surface primer. Next will be to prime and paint the chassis. 2
beeRS Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 This is coming along nicely. I’m looking forward to seeing more. I’m contemplating buying this kit too.
David G. Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 It looks great so far Jim. How did you manage to paint it, did you build a jig or rig of some sort? David G.
majel Posted January 13, 2022 Author Posted January 13, 2022 I've been able to get some work done on the engine, my glacial building speed ensures this will be a slow process. I used the Tamiya weathering master kits to weather all the parts along with brown and black panel line accent colors. The cooling fan duct was sprayed with thinned clear orange, yellow, and black. I've got a long way to go but I'm happy with the results so far. 2
935k3 Posted January 13, 2022 Posted January 13, 2022 The fan and shroud look perfect for the fiberglass on the real car.
espo Posted January 13, 2022 Posted January 13, 2022 The kits parts all seem to have excellent detail in them. Your paint work looks great on this, and the finishes all seem to look very realistic.
majel Posted January 17, 2022 Author Posted January 17, 2022 Got a little more work done on the engine. Really happy with the way it's coming out. The details that Tamiya builds into this scale is amazing! 1
majel Posted February 7, 2022 Author Posted February 7, 2022 Slowly making progress. Engine is nearly done, I got the fittings drilled out, painted, and installed for the fuel lines on the distribution side. Now I need to do the same thing on the intake side and install the lines. The chassis is all painted and I got started on the interior. It's too bad that the pedal assembly won't be very visible when the car is completed because the brake and clutch pedals actually move! The pedals have PE faces which adds an authentic look. The bottom of the chassis pan is way too glossy and will need to be weathered some and possibly hit with a semi gloss clear coat. Any suggestions on weathering it or getting rid of the shine would be welcome. 1
majel Posted March 20, 2022 Author Posted March 20, 2022 Progress has been slow, but I have gotten the majority of the front and rear suspension done. Made front brake lines from painted braided line and the rear lines from stainless welding wire. I'm lightly weathering the chassis and pan to look like the car has run a few practice laps. I've got to run a couple of transmission lines and shifter cable and few drivetrain should be complete. Now it's on to the interior and look and fuel system.
jaymcminn Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 Beautiful work and nice weathering! I've just started one of these and have come at it from the other direction... I've had the body and floor pan in mockup for weeks getting the panel and door gaps just right and correcting some issues like a warped front hood to cowl join.
charlie libby Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 wow looks awesome so far can't wait to see it finished
majel Posted May 2, 2022 Author Posted May 2, 2022 Although not a big update it does represent a lot of tedious work. I installed the front fender flares rivets using MFH round head rivets which I will also use on the rear fender flares once the decals are installed. These are a white metal rivet which I think look great. The fuel cell was painted using clear yellow, clear orange, and flat black in mist coats. The cell plates had raised nubs which were sanded off and then drilled out to accept Prime Miniatures .5mm brass rivets. I drilled out 48 holes and installed 48 rivets. Next will be installing nuts and bolts in the fuel cell and weathering the under bonnet area where the oil and fuel cells are installed.
