Tom99 Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 I got this 1972 Mustang dealer promo in the mail yesterday. It is going to need some work.
Oldmopars Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Any chance you can use parts from the 007 Mustang to rebuild this one?
Tom99 Posted November 16, 2021 Author Posted November 16, 2021 The only thing that seems to be missing, is the drivers side windshield pillar.
vamach1 Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 Seems like the back half is missing. Even if you were able to piece this together, it would have to be painted. I never bought a promo because they are basically the same as the original AMT except for the hood does not open and there is only the bottom third of the engine. The interior and wheels might be salvageable but that body looks beyond repair. Perhaps you can use a new AMT body and go from there.
Oldmopars Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 That’s what I was thinking, save as much of the original as possible, but use the repop AMT body to rebuild it. That way you keep some of the original vintage kit.

That way you keep some of the original vintage kit. The 007 kit is based on the MPC molds. These kits would be best or one of the later reissued AMT kits that are not based on the MPC kit and were rebranded by Round2 under the AMT name. Edited November 16, 2021 by vamach1
vamach1 Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 (edited) This would be the correct body except for the Mach1 lettering.. I have no affiliation with this seller other than having bought parts from him before. As for the promo, I hope you did not pay a lot and you knew the condition it was in. vamach1 Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 This one sold for $160 on Ebay even with the bent windshield pillar. ? The things that make the first AMT kit and the promo unique is the MACH1 lettering is molded into the body. Also, it has the “chrome” strip along the lower side of the body. On the real car if it did not come with the “hockey stick” side decals the Ford factory added the chrome trim above the painted bottom area (silver or black) depending on the base color of the car.
paul alflen Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 TO fix find a 1972 Amt Mustang body. Graft promo body front clip on to keep sealed hood . Use engine block off from promo on kit chassis .Use kit glass if needed . Reuse promo wheels .Use new kit chrome or re-chrome Promo bumpers . Paint all body panels with Grabber blue paint including under side. TAPE OFF AND PAINT LOWER SIDE SILVER AND I THINK THE SEPERATE EXHAUST WAS SILVER ALSO?( But not 100% sure). A LOT OF WORK BUT A GOOD FAKE 160$ PROMO FOR YOU OWN SHELF when done! Very challenging but can be done!
vamach1 Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 (edited) Here is the underside of a promo from Ebay. The exhaust is from the 67/69 era and thus the 71-73 kits and promos also have the incorrect exhaust setup. It should have twin oval mufflers and not the resonators with the single muffler behind the axle. Likewise MPC made the same “error” and did not bother to update the mufflers. Keef Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 ? I’d be having a nice chat with my delivery person about the condition of said package, that is totally unacceptable
