Kurt brings up an interesting topic... "Regional Rust". I come from the New Jersey rust belt so we had the salt rust through. Kurt is from a dry area so he's more surface rust. I've consciously built both ways, depending on the theme of my model and the plate I'm putting on it! It's been said Jersey cars rust from the bottom up, but Arizona cars rust from the top down! Expand That last line is genius ? and it's absolutely true. In order for that '34 to get that bad in the back like that it would have to have been submerged in salt water for a few years. ?. I got a little carried away but it was such fun ?

Thank you for joining RUST! I wonder if anyone has built an authentic Demo Derby car?? You know, the winner? The only kit I have that's suitable is my '56 Chrysler 300.....naaah? I do have a built '57 Ford wagon that's already rusty! Hmmmmm...... Expand I'm glad you started this topic! On Fakebook someone has posted really wrecked cars, fairly convincing but it's not an easy task. All I can think of, is pushing thick aluminum foil on the body, then wadding it up.

Expand Thanks for that comment. The Southwest is brutal on everything, especially rubber and plastic. This truck is in Albuquerque. I'm fascinated what derelicts in the Northwest look like, moss and lichen grow on the rust, which would be fun to try with railroad scenic stuff.

customline Posted January 15, 2022 Author Posted January 15, 2022 (edited) As of this moment, this will be the next abandoned/rusty/weathered/barn-find that I plan to build. How many trucks like this have you seen in your life that looked like they haven't been driven in years and looked like junk? Or were still in use and looked like junk. When I'm out driving in the countryside I always, ALWAYS look for old cars and trucks. I just can't help it ? . Drives Wifey crazy (a very short trip for her ?.) As a child and a young adult, I loved touring auto graveyards. There's a feeling I get in a place like that. Can't explain it. Anyway, this truck ( below) is perfect for the weathered/rusted treatment, an ideal candidate ? there is another way to go, though. The patina job. Rusty on the outside, modern engineering on the inside and a coat of clear over the rust. Edited January 15, 2022 by customline
mchook Posted January 15, 2022 Posted January 15, 2022 Everyone here knows that "rust" is what I do most of the time. I really shouldn't get started on this, but here are a bunch of my favorites from years gone by. Not all my best work but still some of my favorites. 3
customline Posted January 15, 2022 Author Posted January 15, 2022 Mark, those are phenomenal! If not your best, we'd love to see those! These models are indistinguishable from the 1:1s. Beautiful work, Mark ? This type of work has become a specialty for some of you and it requires a lot of thought and study. I can't come anywhere near the "junk" I've seen in this thread. Awesome!

AmericanMuscleFan Posted January 15, 2022 Posted January 15, 2022 You guys are all masters of rust! I've always wondered why we're all drawn to rusty model cars when we hate seeing this stuff on our real cars so much? We're pretty well equipped with rusty vehicles here north of the border and your depictions of the phenomenon are very convincing! I love them all!!! ?

Claude Thibodeau Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 Hi Jim! Your recreation of "chemical decay" is true to life, and you obviously master the technique. Bravo! Since you invited more examples of degradation... CT 1
mchook Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 Theses are all amazing builds and I think I found my new favorite topic. Here's a few more of mine... If I'm adding too many pics please let me know. 2
Claude Thibodeau Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 Hi Mark! Obviously, you guys from upstate NY have made rust an art form. Very convincing! Your model A "tractor" reminds me of the things I used to encounter in the late 60's, when we were running the contry roads to find remnants of antique cars to find parts for our hot rods. Of course, the collector/restorers crowd would no sell us any extra part they had, because of the "horrible cars" we wanted to build. Nostalgia... CT
Steve H Posted January 17, 2022 Posted January 17, 2022 Well, Mark is a VERY tough act to follow, Mark you have a knack for doing just enough, but not too much. Extremely difficult to do, you do very well sir. I’ll throw in a few pics. 33 Ford, (ZZ Top car) My first attempt at patina 57 Chev daily driver. 37 Ford truck. Cool to see all this beautiful rust in one spot. 1
Eric Macleod Posted January 17, 2022 Posted January 17, 2022 I probably posted this one a long time ago but it fits this thread...which is a great thread by the way. 1
customline Posted January 17, 2022 Author Posted January 17, 2022 I can't express how fantastic these rust-buckets, worm cans, and ? boxes are! ? Don't be shy, keep 'em comin'! This is so inspirational I want to throw my current projects back in the boxes and start a rust-bucket tonight ?!

Expand I remember these old Metro vans well. Originally used as delivery trucks from local bakeries in my hometown, many served as "beach buggies". They could be seen at Rhode Island's southern beaches, mostly members of the RIBBA, easily identified by a pair of propane bottles on the back. They were everywhere. Is this "hippie" van an admission of something Eric? ?
