PatW Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 Built box stock adding a scratchbuilt trolley.. 2
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 Cool build. Fascinating period in aviation history. I'll need to build a trolley similar to yours for an upcoming Supermarine S6B scratchbuild.
TransAmMike Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 Interesting subject, very nice build Patrick.
PatW Posted February 7, 2022 Author Posted February 7, 2022 Thanks guys. The Evergreen square bar came in just right for the trolley.
bobthehobbyguy Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 Cool. Nicely done. Interesting subject.
bisc63 Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 Nice! She's clean for a Japanese plane. Seems like their paints weathered more severely than others, but they all were new once! Love these float planes myself, got the old Matchbox Heinkel He115 waiting for me in the stash, among others. Hope mine turns out as well as yours. Well done.
DPNM Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 Well done Pat! Thank you for posting. Unique, at least to me, subject.
Sandboarder Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 Great job Pat!! The weathering on the trolley looks spot on ?
PatW Posted February 9, 2022 Author Posted February 9, 2022 Thanks Sandboarder. I'm looking at building another trolley as I have a DHC-3 Otter Floatplane underway!
bbowser Posted February 12, 2022 Posted February 12, 2022 Neat subject beautifully done. Keep them coming!

A question just occurred to me, and maybe you can educate me a bit! Did they use a specific vehicle to tow in and launch these trolleys, or just tow with whatever was available with a hitch? I'm thinking of something used like a German might have used a Kettenkrad as tow vehicle? Of course I'm referring to land operations, and I recognize that these were probably used mostly as shipped-launched/recovered. (?)
PatW Posted February 13, 2022 Author Posted February 13, 2022 Hi bisc63, well when I was researching the Willow it was shown only once on a trolley and as others have commented in the trolley WIP, I used a photo of a model ( so I'm told) just to get an idea of what one looked like. I would imagine that they would have used whatever tractor or towing vehicle wherever the were at the time. Your Idea of a Kettenkrad would be about right because the rear end was tracked, am I right, to drag it up a beach or concrete slipway?

stavanzer Posted February 23, 2022 Posted February 23, 2022 I'm sure the Japanese had tractors that were used for towing the beaching dollies of the planes at their bases. 1
PatW Posted March 5, 2022 Author Posted March 5, 2022 Yes Alexis they would have had, but we are talking generally about all types of float planes, military or civilian as I have flown in, in Alaska.
