tim boyd Posted July 28, 2022 Posted July 28, 2022 (edited) If you haven't checked out Roger Hayes' cool '32 Chevy Cabrio hot rod completion, do it first. Then you can look at two of my three builds based on this tooling. Mine were built in the mid 1970's, right around 1980, and lastly, around 1990 or so. More details and images here: (images 68-74): Boyd Phaeton/Touring, Cabriolet, and Convertible Hot Rods album | Funman1712 | Fotki.com, photo and video sharing made easy. More images and details here (images #20-34): Boyd Roadster Hot Rod Pickups album | Funman1712 | Fotki.com, photo and video sharing made easy. Sadly, looks like I don't have any digital images of the third build, the original MPC "1933 Sedan Delivery" kit, but I believe this was featured in an abbreviated buildup in my Street Rodder Modeler's Corner column around 1980 or 1981. Thanks for looking, and again, my kudos to Roger on his recent completion....TIM Edited July 28, 2022 by tim boyd 1
Terry Jessee Posted July 28, 2022 Posted July 28, 2022 That pickup has always been one of my favorite Boyd models. Good to see it again.
bondo bill Posted July 28, 2022 Posted July 28, 2022 All sharp builds, I wish they could reissue that kit
espo Posted July 28, 2022 Posted July 28, 2022 They are both beautiful looking builds, and I like seeing the inline the way you did it on the roadster. The pickup is something I would really like to build.
Plowboy Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 They're both cool models! I really appreciate seeing the old build of the Cabriolet! Those two piece Good Years tells it's age immediately.
Koellefornia Kid Posted July 30, 2022 Posted July 30, 2022 Cool Chevies! especially the blue pickup! Very nice!
Dennis Lacy Posted July 31, 2022 Posted July 31, 2022 I loved following the pickup project in Modelers Corner back in the day. The conversion looks just right and the model as a whole is awesome. It inspired me to grab a couple of those white metal chassis kits from R&D Unique. Let’s just say they were beyond my set of skills at the time. What a mess I made of that stuff! I still don’t think I’d have the patience. ?
ybsluos Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 All wonderful as usual from you Tim but that blue pickup is amazing! -Mark
Mr. Metallic Posted August 30, 2022 Posted August 30, 2022 Nice builds Tim, but the RPU is stunning. About 15 years ago I started turning the Vamp Van into a closed cab pickup, maybe I should drag that out again while you and Roger are providing inspiration.

Craig...that's one I've had in the back of my mind for many years....presently seeing it as a fenderless format, channeled over the frame, and running the hot rod version of the Galaxie '48 Chevy I-6 or maybe the Fisher Head version out of the old AMT '51 Chev. And maybe setup more Vintage Beach Racing or Colorado Hill Climb style that trad hot rod alone.... Anyway, go for it. Would love to see how it turns out...TIM

alan barton Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 That roadster pickup grabs me by the throat as much now as it did when you first built it. I don't think it could be done better. It is sublime! I turned the Vampire Van into a fully fendered pickup when I was about fifteen. I used cereal box cardboard smeared with tube glue to finish the back of the cab - what can I say? Turns out we have better material these days! Cheers Alan
