70 Sting Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 (edited) Completed and photographed Revell's kit this past weekend. Painted with Tamiya LP-51 Orange over grey primer. Wheels are Tamiya X-10 Gun Metal over gloss black. All semi gloss black parts were painted with decanted Tamiya X-29. Most of the kit went together pretty well though I think the ride height could be a little lower at the front. I've also seen builds where the upper door panels stick out a bit at either the front or back. What I Learned: 1. Carbon fiber roof decal was stubborn – didn’t respond well to Micro Sol and Mark Fit Strong was a little rough on the decals of the Revell C7.R 2. Should not have glued the front bumper to the body before painting as it made it more difficult to mask and paint. Trade off is it’s tougher to match paint coverage – especially this orange. 3. Must remember to remove Tamiya Tape before putting parts into the dehydrator as it leaves goo behind. Gaffer’s tape is fine. 4. Side and rear window assembly was a little finicky to squeeze in. 5. Window masks purchased from Hiroboy weren’t precisely cut and required a couple extra pieces of tape to round out a couple edges. They also left residue behind after removing (see photo) 6. Primer is your friend. Skipped priming the engine, interior and a few other smaller parts however this left them more susceptible to scratching and chipping. Thanks for looking :^) Edited August 3, 2022 by 70 Sting 3
Bainford Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Beautiful McLaren. Nice, clean work, and the paint looks fantastic. Overall very nicely done. 1
Nacho Z Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 She is a beauty! Great color combo for this car, really looks the part. Nice job! 1
Tommy124 Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Hi Harry, nicely done, looks great! From my personal experience I can fully agree on points 3 and 5 as stated above. Tamiya tape (as most other tapes) and the softeners contained therein will react with most types of paint, especially when applied for (too) long and in warm conditions. And yes, those Hiroboy painting masks can be a PITA. I used one for my Nissan GT-R R33 some weeks ago and found it to be very imprecise. The masks' shapes didn't really match the Tamiya glass parts, despite being specifically sold for that kit... ? 1
Gluebomber Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Outstanding build and very well photographed. I love your color choices. Great Job, Harry! 1
Rich Chernosky Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Nice job Harry, the orange suits it very well, luv the license plate. 1
mrm Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Looks like a very neat kit. I never even knew it existed. The colors are perfect, classic McLaren. And everything is done in a perfect way - very clean. Great build. 1
happy grumpy Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 That's a great looking Mc Laren Harry. The color fits it perfectly. Your model really stands out thanks to your excellent photography. ?
Ben Brown Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Beautiful model! One of McLaren’s best-looking road cars, IMHO. I had the same experience with those masks. It took me longer to get the adhesive off of the clear parts than it would’ve taken me to just mask them myself with Tamiya tape. Ben 1

beeRS Posted August 7, 2022 Posted August 7, 2022 Super nice build. Thanks for sharing all the build tips you learned along the way. Are the doors separate pieces on this Revell kit? 1
70 Sting Posted August 7, 2022 Author Posted August 7, 2022 4 hours ago, beeRS said: Are the doors separate pieces on this Revell kit? Yes they are working scissor doors. I decided to glue them closed for a few reasons: I didn’t like the way my inside door panels turned out; the interior is 90% black; the doors might not sit tight to the body as was the case with the Lamborghini Aventador I built previously. I might go back and try using tiny magnets to hold them more firmly in place. 1
beeRS Posted August 8, 2022 Posted August 8, 2022 I think you made the right decision. No opening doors is better than badly fitting doors. 1
