Calb56 Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 To use a 32 grill with this, what amount of "chop" would be necessary if you didn't want to just lower the grill up front? I know Model Car Garage has both 4" and 6" available. Thanks Charles
Jon Haigwood Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 Replicas and Miniatures has a 2" chopped 32 Grille Shell with photoetched Grille ,it may also come with the radiator
JollySipper Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 Seems like it would depend on whether you're building it channeled or a hi-boy.......

Hi-boy, I thought I saw a 2" chopped grill, I'm working on an order for RMoM, guess it's getting bigger now.

Exactly. Every car is a little different when it comes to what looks right. There's no formula. It's personal judgement as far as what "good proportion and line" dictates, and that's why some cars look dorky and unbalanced and some are sleek and attractive. Calb56 Posted September 29, 2022 Author Posted September 29, 2022 Doing a lil more research, a 29 Ford grill shell is either 27.5" or 29" in height and a 32 Ford grill shell is 32" in height. So anywhere from the 2" chop to 6" chop would work depending on how I place the grill. Never an easy answer.
Richard Bartrop Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 The 4 inch chop seems to work nicely on the channeled version.

Never an easy answer. Yup. And if you're building a real car, there's also the size of the radiator you can squeeze in whatever grille shell you want for aesthetic reasons...and that illustrates the reason why the best cars are the product of rather a lot of careful consideration of a wide variety of interrelated factors. 3

Exactly what I'm attempting to do, just in a scale that I can afford. I know it's "just" plastic and therefore it's "close enough for rock 'n' roll" but I am somewhat ADD and though I can't justify counting every single bolt, I so want my builds to be realistic as if they were 1:1... whether I'm looking at another Era or if I'm just doing a contemporary Traditional build. That's just me. Crazy as my wife will tell you. Charles 4
oldscool Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 I have always felt that it doesn't look right if the top of the grille shell is higher than the top of the cowl. 2
Jon Haigwood Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 I like to have the Grille shell positioned so if you had a hood it wood be level from front to back 2

I recall using the Model Car Garage chopped Deuce Grill on this model based on this heavily kitbashed Revell '29A Roadster....hope that helps....TB 3

I do love that, with the track nose, great job making the hood...

Plowboy Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 You don't want to chop the grille too much like I did on this model. I've changed it since the photos. To me, the sweet spot is to have the top of the grille with the top of the cowl and the bottom of the grille just below the axle.
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 Cut the grille about this much?. Better to make a small cut and then sneak up on the correct amount rather than take a big hunk out first.... -RRR 2

Scott Colmer Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 RRR - Wow. I check out the Fotki on the top. That is a lot of surgery. Came out great! The grill angle looks dead on too. - Back on topic.
