Glad you found the issue. It is absolutely necessary to take the time to test fit the pieces of an older or any  kit before painting the parts. Nothing is more frustrating that finding this type of problem late in a build.

Mystery solved on the gap between the dash and windshield opening.  Don't know how I missed it but there was some excise material at the bottom of the windshield opening on the passengers side.  Just a little sanding and it looks much better.

I got the Tamiya TS-11 Maroon decanted this morning and all went well since it was my first time doing this.  I have more than enough paint to shoot the 55 so I'm going to waiting for a more ideal day to paint.

Are you going to do a solid color or a two tone maybe along the design that GM used on the Nomads?

The body will be all one color.

Sorry to hear that you are having such issues with the 55 kit. I built it several years ago with one of the ERTL offerings. I don't remember having any issues with the windshield/dash alignments. Maybe it was a crisper mold back then.  However, the In hinges for the rear tailgate are quite fragile and finnicky. In taking it out of its storage in a scrapbooking case and opening the rear, I managed to break the right rear hinge on the tailgate. I have sorta fixed it so that it opens and closes, but I don't have any of that color paint anymore to touch it up. Maybe I should have put some Vaseline or powdered graphite on the hinges before I stored it away.  Painted moveable plastic parts don't work too good together over time. Here are a couple of photos. The white top has yellowed significantly over time. I have another one so I may build it again!

Very nice looking 55 John!

Well...as you all know I decanted the Tamiya TS-11 Maroon and airbrushed it.  After the paint had set for a couple days it was still pretty thin.  I did not need to add any thinner to this paint before airbrushing as it was still pretty thin.  The body was primed with Tamiya white surface primer and it sat for 3 days before airbrushing the Maroon.  I shot 5 coats letting it dry about 5 min between coats.  I was up close on the body when I shot it but it has the appearance as though I had my airbrush far away and the paint started to dry before it hit the body. I had the body in the paint drying booth for 6 hr so the paint is good and dry but since I've been having trouble with paint drying I'm going to let is set for a few days before doing anything with it.  I'll wet sand the paint with 12,000 grit before shooting it with the Tamiya X-22 clear.  The clear will mask some of the grainy look but we'll see just how much.  Only time will tell, I may have to strip this one.

Thanks James.  Yup, it should look great once I get it together.

Great looking color, hope the paint job turns out well so you don't have to strip it.

Thanks Kyle.  I shot a test spoon as well so I'll shot the clear on it to see how it turns out.  If it's not to my liking the paint will be coming off.

This grainy look means either the paint dried before hitting the model (as you guessed), or the paint layer did not reach the saturation level. In this case the painting process has to go on. To assess the situation wet sand the grains with, say 2000 paper. If you get a smooth dull surface, you can go on with the clear. If it exposes the plastic/primer then the paint layer is too thin to achieve gloss.

Just now joining this WIP party and really liking your progress so far Bob. Your “debugging” of the dash to body fit is a good reminder to dry-fit liberally and get all the little fit problems solved before painting. It’s interesting how good a few of the ancient tooled AMT kits still are (‘49 Merc, ‘49 Ford) after sixty years.

Love this Maroon color. I’ve never had much luck decanting rattle can paint and airbrushing it, I’ve had better results just spraying Tamiya lacquers straight from the can (Tamiya’s nozzles are the best). What color(s) are you planning to go with for the interior? I think a grey & white or black & white might really pop? Good luck on your sanding!

Great color. Nice work fixing the dash issue. Test fitting always reduces the potential for fit issues.

One suggestion on the paint. If the paint is really thin you should try reducing the pressure and shooting closer(you might want to try this out on a scrap body and see if it helps). Wondering if your paint issue was the paint drying too fast. Hope you can save the paint as the color looks great.

Yup, I hear ya man.  Wet sanding is up next but I'm going to let this set for a few more days since I have been having a lot of trouble with paint drying.

Yeah, this is an old kit and the tooling is worn out.  I'd rather use my airbrush when spraying the body and Tamiya didn't have this color in their acrylic or lacquer so I opted to decant the TS-11 Maroon.  I went with a Satin Warm Caramel for the interior.

I hear ya.  Test fitting saves a lot of handling and getting scratches, finger prints, etc. all over the body.  I had my air pressure set at about 20 psi and thought that should have been fine.  I was spraying about 6" away.  Since this was my first time decanting paint and spraying a thinner paint I'm just not sure.  Decanted paint may take a lot of testing which I'm not going to do.  If it doesn't work out I'll strip it and go with something else.
