Slotto Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 This is the AMT release of the 1971 Plymouth Duster. I got this in a trade in the trade forum. The inspiration was my brother in laws car back in 1973. I built this one on the down low, so no build thread. This is one of the better paint jobs I've done. I used craft acrylics and Duplicolor automotive clear. The interior is Apple Barrel gloss black craft acrylics. I built the engine but decided to go curbside after the incident. While building a series if problems occurred and I lost it. I should have just walked away and cooled off but instead, I threw it across the room. First time I ever did that. I've often wanted to in the past but this time I couldn't control myself. I'm a little embarrassed but what's done is done. I boxed it up and left the bunker. I had cooled off the next morning and I assessed the damage. Things were bad. Chunks of both A pillars snapped off, the right front quarter snapped off, the front glass shattered and side glass were wrecked. The front and rear suspension shattered and the exhaust tips are now lost. I decided to build it for display as a reminder to myself what not to do. I began repair and had to make new glass. I tried to restore everything back to its previous state but was not as successful as I wanted. Here she is, please be gentle in your comments. Thanks for looking. 5
Jim B Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 Despite your AMT issues, I think your Duster came out really nice. 1
espo Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 Great looking little Duster. Good body color and nice paint finish. I learned a long time ago these things don't bounce worth a tinkers you know what. 1
karbuildr Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 I think you should be commended for sharing your dilemma and you did a good job rebuilding this car. I like the blue color and it looks good. 1 1
ybsluos Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 Hey Steve don’t worry I too have played “Styrene Darts”! We are only human. Anyhow fantastic work Brother!-Mark 1
AMT68 Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 Definitely a very nice paint job. And yeah they can get frustrating at times. You persevered nicely. 1
Vic Florie Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 I've also been known to toss a model. Not so much as I've gotten older but I would toss them at the floor. The parts bounce further and you don't damage the wall. 1
Erock Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 You don't know how many times I wanted to throw a model across the room! Thank you for taking one for the team. lol. still looks decent considering the before pics 1
rickcaps55 Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 LOL don't feel bad look I am 71 and I have been building going back to 1962 when i was 10 and over the years I bet i have done it a good 6 or 7 times the last time was 2 years ago this time i put in a very large vise and just closed it till i had confetti lol. Let me ask anyone of you guys out there like i said I am 71 I love the hobby and want to go on as long as i can but I think one of the things that gets a lot of guys crazy once you're in that 60 and up range some of the new kits have these very nice detailed underside witch when i was younger was great but i like the simple ones now 90% of the people that look at the kits i did never see the underside i like how Revelle was doing the kits when there was no tunable wheels I say if it was not for the guys in our age range they would not be selling as many kits the young kids today have no interests in the hobby all they want is the I phones and computers i tried to get my grandsons into it but they just go back to the video games I think they have to make the kits a bit more simple. 1
THarrison351 Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 I've flown several models all with disastrous landings. Usually because my foot follows after. Yours appears to have survived rather well! I've built two of these Dusters and final assembly is not the easiest. 1
Yeah Nah Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 This hobby gets the best of us occasionally Steve but it obviously has it's hooks deep enough in for us to keep doing it. The Duke boy's Charger can survive multiple launches (at least supposedly) but clearly our 1/25 plastic cars can't survive even one! All considered, your Duster still looks pretty good. 1
happy grumpy Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 I have had a few of those "loose it moments". I almost threw my Hemi duster, this thing fought me all the way. I destroyed a few old Heller models, a 70 Camaro, but I bought them over and finally was able to get thru. Despite the issues, you did a great save and the end result was worth it. Nowadays , I just put them back in the box and go back to it and eventually it works out. 1
Slotto Posted October 16, 2023 Author Posted October 16, 2023 I did something I never do. I added the decals. Need to find some wrinkle cream. I also fabbed up an antenna. And, I found the exhaust tips! 2
Zippi Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 That Duster turned out pretty sharp dude. Nice work Steve. 1
