AmericanMuscleFan Posted February 19 Posted February 19 OUTCH!!! Very sad news Charlie, I hope you come back in great shape very soon without any after-effects of this mishap. For everyday life and the benefit of the hobby, I hope the best for you my friend! It's hard to believe that you made the bodywork in brass, the paint hides your incredible artistic work but the photos of your work beforehand remain for posterity! 🎩
Pierre Rivard Posted February 19 Posted February 19 I feel sad about your injury and hope you will recover 100% The black and red theme looks very promising. Patiently waiting for you to feel good enough to resume this extraordinary build.
MarkJ Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Charlie, so sad to hear of your unfortunate injury. I know you will recover fully and will be back to your normal exceptionally fine work creating masterpieces from metal. There are probably only a handful of people who can do what you do so we need to have you back at it, giving us all the inspiration to try to achieve what you do so we can try to emulate you at the things we have a passion for, albeit that pale in comparison. Praying for your speedy and complete recovery.
NerdmanB Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Don’t sell yourself short Charles. Love the color combination. Sorry to hear about your injury. Worked as a mechanic most of my life, no stranger to getting beat up at work. Hope you heal quickly. Brian
charlie libby Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 thank you all for your kind thoughts . it is doing well. stiches are all out. got to keep it bandage for at least 4 for weeks. didn't slow me done as much as i thought it would. alot of sanding and painting and alot of plastic gloves. got the front fenders in black with 4 coats of clear. i can sand and buff next week. i have found thru test pieces a huge difference in the red if i paint it over gray primer or black. i painted the entire body black so that i can put it all back together to put 1/16 pin stripe tape down the length of both side with the doors , hood and nose lined up properly then disassemble and paint the red on the parts separately. chassis is going together well, it should its been apart and back together enough times. more time invested in drying time , but i am working on my new project in between.thank you all 2
Codi Posted March 4 Posted March 4 It IS amazing what you've been able to do with the car Charlie after the accident you experienced. The black fender that you polished out looks fantastic......we all know what a bear black paint is to make it look perfect. You're a braver man than me. Cheers, tim 1
charlie libby Posted March 9 Author Posted March 9 i finally polished one fender. 4000,8000, and polish. it looks good .i always afraid when it comes to sanding the clear, its so easy to sand through on the edges. i put the body back together to do a pin stripe and i could not get it to go back together. i had to make some adjustments in the frame rails and i dont know why. but it fits now. have to sand blast and repaint the frame .i will put the ..040 pin stripe tape on and take it apart and start painting the red. i have been working on the 55 chevy in between.more after some of the parts are painted red 3
MarkJ Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Fender turned out very nicely. Yes Charlie, sometimes polishing can be very scary. That's one thing I don't like to do.
kensar Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Superb work all around, Charlie. I'm glad to hear you are getting over the injury.
ybsluos Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Charlie I hope your finger is healing and yes I agree with everyone else….your skills are breathtaking. -Mark
charlie libby Posted March 18 Author Posted March 18 i have been painting ,sanding and polishing. red is coming long well. i thought the pin stripe was going to be .040 but it is more to scale at .015 but hard to see in the pictures. none of these have been sanded or polished . i will start that this saturday. i like to wait a week after painting. the front fenders are sanded but not finished polishing. thanks ken . 1
charlie libby Posted April 7 Author Posted April 7 hi everybody, computer has been down .assembly and paint is going well . i had to unsolder some of the chassis and make an adjustment i don't know what happened . it had been assemble before but its ok now. sand blasted and repainted. I think its going together well other then that .all the separate pieces are sanded out to 12,000 grit ready for polish. the body will get the clear this week. i think the colors go together well. looking forward to it being shiny. talk to you again soon. 1
Bugatti Fan Posted April 8 Posted April 8 (edited) I have been following this build and pleased to hear of your recovery from that injury. Really nice model reaching its final stages here and found the old school engineering of this model fascinating. I would imagine that there is more of a sense of satisfaction making a model from scratch like this than could ever be achieved by designing a kit or parts for a kit to be 3D printed. As an engineer I really like to see models built using traditional engineering methods, turning, milling, drilling, panel beating, soldering and brazing and then painting and finishing to a high degree as displayed on this build. Before I get castigated by the 3D printing fraternity, I am not downplaying their skills in any way having done 3D design work myself in the past, and fully recognise the 3D design skill set required takes time not only to master the CAD to ensure that parts designed fit together properly but also the foibles of using a 3D printer. It's just a different skill set as a means to an end as I see it. Edited April 11 by Bugatti Fan
Rattlecan Dan Posted April 11 Posted April 11 I did not know such things were possible. I haven't the words. Great to hear you are feeling better.
BK9300 Posted April 11 Posted April 11 A stunning amount of detail to look at in your frame - a tremendous accomplishment overall!
Codi Posted April 12 Posted April 12 I enjoy blowing your pics up Charlie to capture all of the detail you put into your builds. I can't wait to see the body assembled and clear coated, that two tone is going to POP! cheers, tim
AmericanMuscleFan Posted April 13 Posted April 13 Everything about this build is fantastic Charlie, but what impresses me most is knowing that all those body panels were once sheet brass, that's pure art my friend! 👌
charlie libby Posted April 21 Author Posted April 21 hi Tim how is your arm doing, getting better i hope. hi mike thanks for the complement and for looking. Francis is it warming up yet? your car is looking great. thanks for coming back noel. thank you ,Donato its slowly coming together. got alot of paint done ,all of it i think. finally got clear on the body and got most of it sand to 3000 grit ,only 4 more finer grits to go. can't wait to see it polished. had to strip and repaint the nose.one part of the clear got foggy and would not sand out before i sanded through to the red. also had a spot on the right rear fender same thing happened. it looks like thousand very tiny air bubbles. its starting to look nice. i have company visiting all this week. no progress for awhile.
MarkJ Posted April 21 Posted April 21 Wow, that paint is magnificent. The underside is amazing that it is so smooth and shiny as the top. This build is one for the ages.
BK9300 Posted April 22 Posted April 22 A lot of elbow grease has been used here - just amazing mirror finish on your paint! Do you ever find paint buildup around your bolt holes to be a problem when you get to re-assembling? Beautiful model.
