NOBLNG Posted November 16, 2023 Posted November 16, 2023 What would be the best way to replicate the finish on the bumpers and trim on this car? Thanks for any ideas…pics welcome. Greg.
Bainford Posted November 16, 2023 Posted November 16, 2023 (edited) It's too bad Model Master is gone because their black chrome would be perfect for that. A gloss black with a semi-gloss or satin clear coat might work in that application. No pics, just a thought. Edited November 16, 2023 by Bainford 1
JollySipper Posted November 16, 2023 Posted November 16, 2023 (edited) That look like a really dark gray to me.... DupliColor has a gray Perfect Match color that you could use without clearing it. Edited November 16, 2023 by JollySipper 1 1
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 16, 2023 Posted November 16, 2023 (edited) It looks like a dark low-sheen charcoal metallic to me. SEM has a line of bumper coater aerosols in a variety of very fine metallic colors, formulated to restore real car bumpers. They work very well in the real world. https://www.cardetailsupplies.com/sem-original-bumper-coater/ https://semproducts.com/product/bumper-coatertm-aerosols#product-details Edited November 16, 2023 by Ace-Garageguy 2 1
Straightliner59 Posted November 16, 2023 Posted November 16, 2023 I'm interested in the SIM products Bill mentioned, above. That said, if I was going to try to duplicate it with stuff I have on hand, I'd try semi-flat black, and rub graphite powder into it. I've had great luck, rubbing metal powders into paint bases, and I think that combo might get you there. 1
NOBLNG Posted November 16, 2023 Author Posted November 16, 2023 Thanks guys. I had run across the SEM bumper paints while searching. The graphite idea is interesting and I have some (for lubricating locks) on hand. I also thought this Mr. Hobby Black/Green looks possible…maybe it and the graphite? 2
HSCHMIDT Posted November 16, 2023 Posted November 16, 2023 Createx 5211 opaque black gives a nice satin finish 1
Jon Haigwood Posted November 16, 2023 Posted November 16, 2023 My thoughts would be to use Alclad Satin Clear over Black or Dark Grey 1
Dpate Posted November 17, 2023 Posted November 17, 2023 If no alclad tamiya is close match gunmetal or light gunmetal LP-19 and LP-20 1 1
NOBLNG Posted November 17, 2023 Author Posted November 17, 2023 (edited) I have both the LP-19 and LP-20 and they have quite a metallic and glossy look to them. The LP-61 looks interesting. And I will see if the local HS has any of the Alclad satin clear on hand. Thanks. Edited November 17, 2023 by NOBLNG
bill-e-boy Posted November 17, 2023 Posted November 17, 2023 The Tamiya light gunmetal would be my choice with a coat of semi-gloss clear. The real thing looks like a metalic finish to me. Here is a kit panted gunmetal with light gunmetal stripe.

I did these blower restraints with SNJ aluminum powder rubbed into flat black. I have a couple of brass and bronze metal powders, but, I want to experiment with more of them. there's quite a variety, on Ebay. 1
David G. Posted November 18, 2023 Posted November 18, 2023 Hi Greg. I used Dupli-Color Basic Flat Black on my Tumbler. I think this looks similar to the effect you're seeking. Regards, David G.
