bobss396 Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Started on another AMT '40 Ford. I built my 1st one probably in 1964. Removed the floor pan, put in a vacu-formed piece I got at a show. I made new chassis pieces, the kit ones needed too much work. Suspension is otherwise per the kit. I have a set of AMT '66 Ford wheels on Modelhaus tires and a set from Jay's Resin Tires made up. I'm going with the kit nailhead Buick so far. On other builds with engine swaps I have used the kit transmission since it has to be short to fit the chassis. Body is about 90% there. Frenched the headlights and going bumper delete. Made up a new radiator top. The kit one was pretty shabby. I also have it raised up, as is it sits too low in the chassis. 7
1930fordpickup Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Headed in the right direction. Looks great.
TopherMcGinnis Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Nice! I like it! I've got a '40 panel that I built in the '80s undergoing some updating.
bobss396 Posted January 13, 2024 Author Posted January 13, 2024 Mocked up a '56 Ford engine to the kit transmission. In the ballpark but will save it for another build since I will locate it by a hole in the oil pan up front. I'm sticking with the Buick engine. I'll be going with the Modelhaus wide whites with slicks out back. I have another lot of '40 parts from somewhere I pick parts from. Not quite enough to build 2 cars from unless I ditch the torque tube and go with a parallel leaf rear. And... this odd part at the bottom shows up in various '40 kits. I can't find it on the instructions anywhere. 1
Bullybeef Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 The “odd” part is from the sedan delivery I believe it’s supposed to be the spare tire well with tire
Jan S Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 That odd part is from the ’40 sedan delivery -kit. A rear panel with part of the spare wheel visible. - pic from Drastic Plastics website 1 1
Joe Handley Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Looks good, got a few of each and U’m thinking of bashing a coupe and delivery to make a custom out of them.

espo Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Like the frame and floor pan upgrades. The wide white tires look good, but the diameter of the front tires seem a bit larger than what you would want on a driver. 1

I took 1/16" off the hubs and .030" from each backing plate. Now it looks much better. I have some other big and little tires I may try on it. 1

I was building the AMT '40 Ford and discovered I lost one of the taillights so my idea was to french them. Would you post a picture of what you did? 1
bobss396 Posted January 24, 2024 Author Posted January 24, 2024 More work on the 40. Interior is done and I'm happy with it. Chassis is painted with Tamiya TS 4 German Gray. Switched to the Ford Y block late in the game. Body work is almost done, needs work above the windshield. I frenched in the kit light pods. Glued them in with CA glue and waited a few days for it to dry. Then sanded them to the front fenders. Prime, putty, sand, rinse repeat. I have fitted the lenses to the pods. Also the chevron tail lights. 3
bobss396 Posted February 21, 2024 Author Posted February 21, 2024 Put some Model Master Lacquer on the '40. This is the 1st pass. Will do some color sanding and onto the next coat. 2
customline Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Looks fantastic, Bob! Cool headlight work. Great idea! The Y-block is a neat-o choice, too. 1

The 2nd coat looks even better. The 1st had a few light spots in it. I'll scuff any bumps off it with #3200 grit and go with the MM clear later today. I did a similar engine swap on another '40 using a NASCAR 351, again, the trick is to use the kit transmission.
Dan Hay Posted February 24, 2024 Posted February 24, 2024 Wow, you did a lot of work to correct some blemishes of the time honored AMT 40 kit. I like where this is headed! 1
TransAmMike Posted February 24, 2024 Posted February 24, 2024 That's coming along great Bob, like the headlight treatment and color!!
Zippi Posted February 24, 2024 Posted February 24, 2024 Great looking work so far. That body color is really eye catching.
slusher Posted February 24, 2024 Posted February 24, 2024 Really nice color and work Bob!, What color is that!
customline Posted February 24, 2024 Posted February 24, 2024 (edited) Bob, the rocker covers are not accurate. The hold-down studs are missing. The designer was apparently a Chevy man. ? The more I look at that Y-Block, the better I like it. I ran a '56 272 out of oil on I-95 one day back in '68. ? Edited February 24, 2024 by customline 1

The y-block was a remnant from my '56 Ford figure-8 car. I still have the built up Buick engine to use on another Trophy Series build, maybe a '36 Ford.
James2 Posted February 24, 2024 Posted February 24, 2024 (edited) Not bad for a go too model kit, yours looks very nice. I really like the mods you're making. Edited February 24, 2024 by James2 1
