The 49 Mercury Thread (Because if you haven't built one yet, you should!)

I got the second color mostly done. I want to give it a light sanding when dry, to get rid of some slight imperfections and then give it another coat or two. The nail polish has some very large glitter flakes in it so I strained it through my AK strainer. I had the strainer in the airbrush cup and the flakes were plugging it up, so I think I will pre-strain it next time. I didn’t want that Bass Boat look though.

That's a wicked color combination Greg!

It's going to look great when you get it all smoothed out.

I didn’t even need to give it any more coats. A little wet sanding and some coats of Mr. Hobby clear did the trick. These pics represent the actual color better than the previous ones.

It’s nearly complete now. The only thing I did to the interior is add some door handles and power window buttons. I should have gotten rid of the ejection pin mark on the trans tunnel, but it really isn’t visible easily. I also got the paint polished out to my satisfaction.

That's one beautiful Merc Greg!

I love the interior. The black metal flake dash is a nice contrast to its straight-foreword basic black-n-white scheme. It's like the silk edging on a tuxedo's lapel.

The whole build is fantastic! The color combination, stance and finish you chose highlight everything that's great about the lines and style in this car's design.

Thank you for posting it here Greg!

Some nice work in this thread. I may post a pic of mine. Was almost done had it in a box on shelf, one of the wifes cats slipped in to the basement and knocked it off. A few chips in the roof and thr frame ,interior, and body broke loose. But i did but another kit to build another.

Here is the one i built. Luckily i have another one to redo the body.

The fall didn't do much damage, it looks good Anthony!

I like the detail painting on the chassis.

Hmmm... are those Cadillac hubcaps I see? :D

Thanks. Those caps came with the kit. Damage is on the roof and trunk.

I just came across this thread which got me thinking back to my three 49 Mercury builds.

This AMT 49 got me back into the hobby in 1994. It was inspired by the first really cool car I ever saw cruising by as I walked home from school. It was actually a 4-door 51 Mercury painted purple. I was told it had a Thunderbird engine. I chopped the top and used corduroy for upholstery like I did when I was a kid.49MERC1.jpg.5376c11a2c27d616648af4a523cc89e1.jpg

I got this AMT kit in a Secret Santa draw and built it pretty much box stock as a replica of the car driven by the James Dean character in the movie Rebel Without a Cause.

49MERC2.jpg.4a30b43b00dd2c45c48bd5341a2ff716.jpg

I built this replica of the Sam Barris Merc from the Revell kit.

49MERC3.jpg.8b1fe8fd4531d6b11410bad764841f25.jpg

I was blown away when the guy who installed disc brakes on my 65 Falcon unveiled the car he had been working on for 10 years maybe one of the nicest 49 Merc customs I have ever seen.

You did a great job of hiding the damage when taking the photos.

Cool cars! So I'm sattling on this and show my 49 Mercury. Stock built of the AMT kit. Painted by rattle can. My wife decided I should go with the black roof. The wheels are of the Revell Woody kit because the AMT kit was this "supercool" Rides Magazine Custom Collection issue with this ugly too much to big wheels.
