junkyardjeff Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 A while back I posted a picture of a bottle of Testors paint I had with 40 cents on the cap, today I got another load of models and parts and these were in it. Might see if still good. 4
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 If it's still liquid, you can cut it with cheap lacquer thinner and airbrush the stuff for a really nice finish, ala Donn Yost. 4
FoMoCo66 Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 Wow that stuffs old. However I doubt it's still liquid. A lot of my old paints are solid as a rock. 2
junkyardjeff Posted April 6, 2024 Author Posted April 6, 2024 I do not remember them being that cheap. 1

deuces wild Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Besides lacquer thinner, add about a half dozen stainless bb's from Crossman in the bottles and shake the living BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH out of them...?
junkyardjeff Posted April 7, 2024 Author Posted April 7, 2024 The smaller bottles are Pactra and I found them in the mid 70s and actually used some and they were old back then. 2
1930fordpickup Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 A nice history of brand, price and bottle design. 2

If you enjoy that kind of stuff: I have an extensive research page, showing the evolution of Humbrol tins: https://robdebie.home.xs4all.nl/models/humbrol.htm Since the design changed so often, it can also be used to establish the approximate age of your old tins. I'm often amazed how old the paint is. Like when I painted this 3D printed object: the tins are from (approximately) 1993, 2000 and 1979. I must have been in primary school when I bought the oldest tin. Rob 3
bobss396 Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Pactra paint bottles were 10¢ in the local hobby store. I preferred Testors however, I recall they were 15¢ around 1963 when I first started painting models. 1
Richard Bartrop Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 And I can just imagine the uproar when they bumped the price up to 19 cents. 1
Hi-Po Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 How many of us can remember when you could buy a kit for under a dollar? Check out the prices on these two kits. The price is located right after the kit number - .79 and .98 cents. If I remember correctly, back in the mid 60's, I was buying car kits for around $1.29 or so. Those were the good old days! These rifles are the two oldest kits that I have in my stash. 1

FoMoCo66 Posted April 8, 2024 Posted April 8, 2024 Here are some old crusted up bottles I found in my stash. A couple of very interesting Patrica bottles. And some old testors the black one that cost 30c is definitely newer. 2

sfhess Posted April 11, 2024 Posted April 11, 2024 Today I needed some black paint to do a bit of touch up work on a model. The first bottle of black I found was an old round bottle of Pactra enamel that has probably not been opened in over 25 years. It sounded OK when I shook it so I opened it and stirred it for a minute. It mixed well so I went ahead and used it. It worked like new, fresh paint. Probably better. 1
