Stef Posted June 4 Posted June 4 Really excited about the 65 Fury convertible; they should make more of those and I would happily get one. While I'm no Johan expert, I love the on-brand ideas of Johan-inspired and Johan-esque kits, original parts, and repopping literal Johans using new technologies. Would love to spend a day combing through everything in this store to stock up on squillions of things I want, need, and desire. Great video, thank you! 1

Ron Hamilton Posted June 5 Posted June 5 I wish I lived near the store. My wife will be able to find me there. 2
stavanzer Posted June 5 Posted June 5 I've got a box full of '41 Plymouth Parts, including a Frame. Now I know what to do with it.....
Volzfan59 Posted June 5 Posted June 5 I wonder if the ‘55 Powell pick up will have the pull out fishing rod storage? Probably not, but it would be cool. Great truck show with Atomic City’s new jon boat kit. Powell also made a sport wagon version of the truck. 2
mikos Posted June 6 Posted June 6 (edited) We’ve been hearing about this Powell PU for a long time now. When the prototype was stolen from Okey at the show(?), it seems things ground to a halt. Now, all of a sudden these print ads come out making us hopeful that things are now humming along to eventually have it done. Sorry, but I’m not buying it. People want to bring the Johan name back to life with expensive ultra small runs of resin copies only available on Facebook. I think I’ll pass. If you want my attention, scan some of the old kits that are still around like what Round2 has done from their archives and develop tooling to reproduce it in styrene. Of course, the ever present naysayers will say it can’t be done or there is no “business case” or whatever they can argue to make it seem insurmountable. However, me thinks there a certain element out there that never wants Johan to return. Heaven forbid if they actually gathered the resources to scan a mid ‘60’s Cadillac (or pick your favorite) and reissue it again. I think the universe would collapse then. Edited June 6 by mikos 1

Model manufacturing is a lot like the old joke about race cars. How do you make a small fortune racing? Start with a big fortune. Not to talk intentionally ill of anyone, but I don't believe any of the parties involved in either Faux-han (especially Okey) has the financial wherewithal to produce an injection molded kit from scratch. Probably not the technical knowledge or design experience either for that matter. The guys behind Salvinos had been working in miniatures and collectibles from soup to nuts for decades together and they've still managed to fall all over themselves repeatedly getting the model business going... 5

Kind of like those ethnic jokes which we used to be able to tell before political correctness arrived: you could use the same joke for any ethnic group - just replace a Pole with an Italian or any other ethnicity. 3
Brian Austin Posted June 7 Posted June 7 (edited) I always heard it in the context of recording a folk music album. Along with, "It'll be a million seller. There will be a million units in your cellar you will be stuck with." Edited Wednesday at 10:13 PM by Brian Austin Spelling of a critical word 1

A limited run of the pickups have been made, I bought one at NNL East. Steve Magnante also has one, he did a short video of it.

My point of sale system tells me that if I want to put dollars in my register, then I don't want legacy reissues. Even primped and polished 3D scanned retools of legacy reissues are not what I want. I look at my best-sellers list and it's NOT 1960's tooling. Thus far into 2025 what has been moving out of my door in model car kits? Moebius' tow trucks. Revell's Stranger Things Blazer. Tamiya's Porsche 911GT3RS. The only two vintage reissues that I can genuinely say are selling in comparable numbers are the AMT Streaker Olds F-85 AWB funny car and the Revell '29 Model A Pickup. If someone wanted to revive the Johan name but wanted to put the name on Hasegawa-level quality MODERN kits of Johan's vintage subject matter, then I'd be all for it. But the last thing I need is more 1960's styrene backwash that disappoints FAR more modelers than it makes happy. 3

But the last thing I need is more 1960's styrene backwash that disappoints FAR more modelers than it makes happy. I want the old Johan Kits back! I love the Subject Matter, and even the quirky build style of the kits. But, Justin is Correct. The tape (Point of Sale) does not lie. If Johan is to come back, it needs to be with Modern tooling and today's build quality. What ever Failings in kit design and engineering that us Older Modelers cut our teeth on, the new generation just won't tolerate it. Mediocre Kits and Dodgy Fit, just won't sell any more for the most part. These kits are a "One & Done" for new modelers who are turned off by the whole build experience. Look how Hobby Lobby's model shelves are gradually being taken over by Gundams and Mecha kits. That is what is selling for them. I don't blame them for stocking kits that move. Their whole job as a retailer is to "Move the Merch". If old AMT/MPC won't move and new Bandai tooling does, then that is the way they will head. So, I wish Atomic City and Okey much luck, but Odd Boats and Trailers, and Powell Pick ups are not a resurrection. They are a Rear Guard Holding Action. 2
