Gramps46 Posted July 18 Posted July 18 In 1962 Chevrolet was preparing for the introduction of the new Sting Ray in the 1963 model year and wanted to draw attention with a racing version. Zora Duntov and his team designed and built 5 racing chassis with Sting Ray style body work. Unfortunately for Zora the American Automobile Manufacturers Association, including GM, banned manufactures from racing in 1963. Chevrolet went ahead with finishing their racers but made arrangements with trusted Corvette racers including Gulf Oil's vice president for research Grady Davis. The racers were named Grand Sports and the first race for chassis 004 was April 1963 at Maryland's Marlboro Raceway. This model is based upon 1/25 scale resin body transkit by Cheesecast, Historic Racing Miniature also did one, which could be used on either an MPC or AMT chassis. These transkits were released before Accurate Miniatures released a full kit in 1/24 scale of the 1964 Grand Sport version. This build used an MPC 1964 kit and joins my other Grand Sport Corvettes. There is a WIP post. 9
Coyote_6 Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Very nice car, and nice collection too! Clean build. Love the transporter by the way. Steve
1959scudetto Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Very nice model, Gary - compared with the 64(?) Grand Sports in the background of your last pic, it looks almost tame and innocent (like a wolf in sheepskin)
Rich Chernosky Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Real nice lot of Corvettes and Gran Sports Gary. This will be a handsome addition to your collection. The history was cool too...something I didn't know. Thanks for posting.
ZTony8 Posted July 18 Posted July 18 That was my idea, too, to build the earlier version of the Grand Sport. Someday I will since I have enough of the kits and old stock kit parts.
Dave B Posted July 19 Posted July 19 Nice build Gary, great addition to your other Grand Sports. Dave B
ismaelg Posted July 22 Posted July 22 Will you believe me if I say I love it? Not only a great looking model of the early GS, but also I am very happy to see you back. Regards, Ismael
randyc Posted July 22 Posted July 22 Nice! This was before the guys in suits with heavy suitcases of parts, right?
ismaelg Posted July 22 Posted July 22 Yeah, before all of a sudden engineers took vacations at the same time, packed extra transmission coolers in their luggage and somehow all ended up in the Bahamas at the same time. 🤣 What a coincidence! 1
