crazyjim Posted Tuesday at 08:08 PM Posted Tuesday at 08:08 PM Does anyone know of a way to get 2021 Mazda soul red crystal metallic paint. I don't want to buy a big touch can for just a model.
stitchdup Posted Tuesday at 08:25 PM Posted Tuesday at 08:25 PM since its a recent shade i'd try your local auto parts store. by the time you take shipping into it, it'll be near the same cost anyway
iamsuperdan Posted Tuesday at 08:31 PM Posted Tuesday at 08:31 PM Splash Paints will custom mix anything you want. Airbrush Ready. Shake, Load, N' Spray!
crazyjim Posted Tuesday at 08:57 PM Author Posted Tuesday at 08:57 PM Thanks for the info. I'm going to check Splash Paints.
Rodent Posted Tuesday at 10:00 PM Posted Tuesday at 10:00 PM 13 minutes ago, StevenGuthmiller said: Steve That's actually not correct. The later Soul Red Crystal is 46V. 41V is the earlier Soul Red like my 2016 3. That said, any of the paint people can probably make the right color.
iamsuperdan Posted Tuesday at 10:18 PM Posted Tuesday at 10:18 PM Thinking about it, most body shops can mix up small batches. It would probably be a pint, which is a lot for scale models! There's also this company, which will mix up smaller quantities of literally anything. ScratchesHappen | Superior Touch Up Paint Kits I plan on trying these guys out. Just thin it down and see what happens. Pricing is reasonable.
jaymcminn Posted Tuesday at 11:00 PM Posted Tuesday at 11:00 PM Soul Red is a tri-coat with a high-metallic red base, red toner and clear coat. Any single-stage paint won't capture the look. If I wanted to steer toward hobby paints, I'd try Tamiya Mica Red over Silver Leaf. That might give the right reflectivity and scale metallic look. 1

It definitely is a multi-stage paint. I'd do what you suggest but add a coat of transparent red between the metallic red and clear coat. That should get you pretty close. But it will need that transparent red coat for depth. Edited Tuesday at 11:56 PM by Can-Con 2
crazyjim Posted yesterday at 01:27 PM Author Posted yesterday at 01:27 PM Holy cow! Thank you all for the information. I have some shoping to do.
Dave G. Posted yesterday at 05:31 PM Posted yesterday at 05:31 PM If you want to see how Mazda paint is done, or for that matter the systems I mention also about Createx, watch this paint repair on a Mazda with Soul Red.
Chris V Posted yesterday at 05:38 PM Posted yesterday at 05:38 PM It’s available from Gravity Colors as well…
Project510 Posted yesterday at 08:46 PM Posted yesterday at 08:46 PM (edited) My sons favorite color for cars is Red. So when I build him someting its usually some shade of it. THis time around I am building a R35. He liked the Mazda Red you are speaking of so I tried my own version. Its Mr color C8 (Metalic Silver) > Gaia Color 38 Metalic Red > Gaia Color Clear Red > Tamiya X22 Gloss clear and this is what I got. I do wish it was a bit darker, but he is satisfied and so I am as well haha. Edited yesterday at 08:47 PM by Project510 5
Jonathan Posted yesterday at 09:25 PM Posted yesterday at 09:25 PM (edited) I've used Tamiya TS-95 Pure Red Metallic over Tamiya TS-21 Gold and over Tamiya TS-84 Metallic Gold with decent results. Here it is, followed with a coat of Tamiya TS-65 Clear Pearl. The pearl seems more subdued in "real life". Ignore the run Edited yesterday at 09:27 PM by Jonathan 1
Vessey Posted yesterday at 09:42 PM Posted yesterday at 09:42 PM Splash Paints actually has the correct Soul Red Crystal (not the older Soul Red) as a stock item. https://www.splash-paints.com/product-page/mazda-soul-red-crystal If you feel more adventurous, you can do what this modeller on another forum did and get touch-up paint from a dealership. They had problems with the provided tintcoat and had to use one from a Soul Red paint set, but the final result was a good match. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235117907-mazda-miata-mx-5-20-rf/page/3/#findComment-4739411
