ra7c7er Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 (edited) It is also entirely possible, (keeping in mind that this is merely my speculation here), that Tom Lowe, (owner of Round2), could conceivably purchase AMT/MPC/Polar Lights outright from them, which would render all this moot. We shall see.... It's also entirely possible that Tomy takes the toolings to Japan and we either never see them again or see them come back as $50 dollar import kits. Edited March 13, 2011 by ra7c7er

sjordan2 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I don't think I'd expect any new products or shipping from Japan for a while.
ra7c7er Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 If that happens it will be after the contract between RC2 and R2 runs out. Not necessarily, Tomy could easily cancel any current contracts That have not been acted on. If they really wanted to they could stop all production but that would only hurt them.
Monty Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 As far as the Belgians go, I wish they would take their weird round waffles back. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a proper 4 square American waffle iron these days.

Don't think so.... Tamiya Aston Martin, made in the Philippines Aoshima Mercedes SL AMG, Made in China... So just like in the rest of the world, Japan is farming out (some of) the toy industry to cheap(er) labor countries.

Found it in the alley when I was about 12 it had a bad cord.(old cloth cord) which I replacedwith the one from grandma's retired steam iron! We still use it today! Don't have a clue as to how old it is, replaced one of the coils that burned in two about 10 years ago other than that it works perfect!

Aaronw Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I think that waffle is as Belgian as your English muffin' is English. Just saying are waffles are square too, the only one that isn't, is a Liege sugar waffle, yummy but calories, man! I was going to add French toast, but apparently that did originate in France. I also found out Belgian waffles actually did come from Belgium, Brussels specifically. They differ from American waffles by using a yeast based batter, instead of pancake batter. A Belgian, Maurice Vermersch introduced them to America at the 1964 Worlds Fair. He changed the name from Brussels Waffle to Belgian Waffle because of American's notoriously poor geography skills. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle Oh and to keep this on topic, beer has yeast and I love to eat waffles when I build Tamiya kits.
Foxer Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I was at the 64 World's Fair .. and my mother made waffles long before that. But, I was drinking beer at the fair and I don't know if they were square or round.
Lownslow Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Wow, that's great, another American Company owned by Japan. thats good news for the hobby regardless of who buys them

Sam Cates Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Well, considering the current state of Japanese economy, I doubt it will happen...
ra7c7er Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Well, considering the current state of Japanese economy, I doubt it will happen... You might be right Tomy might put the buyout on hold till they can get a good look at their situation. Also I was just reading that RC2 doesn't own Tomas the tank engine. They only license it which Tomy does also already. So Thomas can't be to much of the reason for the buyout. That leaves the Ertl band and Learning curve which licenses most of it's line to. I am guessing this is less about acquiring a competitor and more about moving into better markets.
Danno Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Okay, so what does 'waffles' have to do with Gremlins?
Jon Cole Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 He just introduced the "Belgian" waffle there. The traditional "American" waffle is nearly 400 years old. Who wants to eat a 400 year old waffle? No amount of syrup is going to help that!
Guest Sickfish Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Considering the disaster that has just befallen Japan & the fact the financial consequences this disaster will have on it's economy, I don't see this sale going ahead. As far as beer goe's... As good as German & Belgian beer is, you guys obviously haven't tried any Aussie beer . I tried a mouthful of Budwiser once, many many years ago, then spat it right back out ... To say it tasted like cats p*ss would be an understatement.... I'm a Coors man when I'm not drinking Fat Tire.
highway Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Oh I'm SO CONFUSED!!! I don't know whether I should build a model, go to the bar and drink some beer, or go to the kitchen and make breakfast, so I guess I'll just go back into my NyQuil induced haze!!!

I had to whip up a big batch in my Black & Decker waffle iron yesterday (B&D was the only maker I could find that still sells one with a proper American waffle pattern), all this talk of models was making me hungry.
