Ace-Garageguy Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Ace, I was on a plane a couple years ago and requested a blanket,( there was to be a $10 charge for this) ... I think the airlines ought to get out of actually flying anybody anywhere, and just rent blankets for $10 for a couple hours. Much higher profit margins and no pesky airplanes and pilots to deal with. Have to bring that up at the next board meeting...
Chuck Most Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 I bet it was those pesky self checkouts . Or maybe a now out-of-work cashier, digging a shallow grave meant for the self checkout that took his jerb...

Craig Irwin Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 There are 3 stores near me that have over 20 check out registers, and never have more than 3 or 4 clerks working at one time, before or after the addition of the self serve lanes. It doesn't look like anyone lost a job because it seems they wouldn't have hired enough clerks to do the needed job anyway.

I can tell you for a fact that at ALL the stores I've worked at, nobody lost their job because of the addition of self checkouts. In most cases, those lanes just replaced lanes that were closed during all but peak periods.

As I said, if it weren't for self check out lines I'd still be in line for the stuff I bought last Friday.
Agent G Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 I must always wonder how many truly understand the meaning of this weekend. RIP Cookie (Vietnam), RIP Mike (Beirut), RIP Scott (Iraq). G
Tom Geiger Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 I'm bummed. My wife's 93 year old aunt died this weekend. Nice lady, sharp as a tack and on Facebook! She led a good long life and suffered little at the end. Now the secondary bummer part. This coming weekend is our 33rd anniversary. We haven't had a vacation or break since we got into this Pennsylvania move. Seriously last time was a week in Sanibel in 2009! So we had a reservation at a very old and interesting hotel in the Baltimore Harbor Fells Point area for 2 nights this coming weekend. And guess when the wake / funeral is? This kinda stuff happens every time we try to take a break!
cobraman Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Murphy's law Tom. Happens to me all the time. Sometimes I think if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck. Sorry for your loss and I hope you can reschedule your getaway. We all need that time on occasion.
Custom Hearse Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 It's also against the law and he should be prosecuted. Where's this pic at? I'll report him to friend in MO who tracks phony heroes. He deleted the photos yesterday. He was reported to Facebook, Stolen Honor, and several other websites.
Harry P. Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 What irked me today? The United States Postal Service. I got a package delivered today. The sender mailed it on May 20 and paid for "Priority Mail" two day delivery. Mailed 5-20. Delivered 5-27. The fact that I waited a week for it isn't my complaint, it wasn't anything urgent. My complaint is that advertised "Two day" delivery took a lot more than that, even adding in Monday as a holiday. In my opinion, if you offer (and charge for) two day delivery that actually takes three times longer, you are ripping off the public and are guilty of false advertising or deceptive business practices or whatever the lawyers call it. And no, this isn't the first time I've noticed the fact that "two day delivery" is nothing more than a scam.
niteowl7710 Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 (edited) Was it actually mailed on the 20th? Because with all the "Mail from Home - Schedule a Free Pickup" that the USPS does the day the manifest (aka tracking number) is created and the day it was actually mailed out can be vastly different. I bought something off eBay last month that the seller created the shipment online with the USPS, but didn't actually mail it out for FOUR days afterwards. Edited May 27, 2014 by niteowl7710
Guest Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Our postal system sucks. They have lost at least 8 things sent to me in the last year, including a autographed book.
Harry P. Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 I found this on the United States GAO (Government Accountability Office) official website. Interesting, to say the least... Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the U.S. Postal Service's (USPS) advertising for priority mail delivery, focusing on: (1) whether USPS has guaranteed 2-day delivery of priority mail in its advertisements; (2) priority mail customers' recent delivery experiences; and (3) USPS changes in its advertisement and delivery of priority mail. GAO found that: (1) the USPS advertising campaign for priority mail delivery promoted guaranteed two-day service; (2) USPS has stopped priority mail advertisements and is revising its advertising campaign to avoid misleading customers about priority mail delivery; (3) USPS measures delivery times from the date of postmark to the date mail is available to mail carriers for delivery; (4) USPS has delivered priority mail within 2 days 77 to 87 percent of the time; (5) the Postal Inspection Service has concluded that priority mail cannot be delivered within 2 days to all destinations due to airline transportation limitations; (6) USPS is considering publishing a list of destinations that are exceptions to the 2-day standard in order to clarify customers' expectations for priority mail delivery; and (7) USPS is eliminating internal problems to improve priority mail delivery service.
Danno Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Well, you and I know you live in a USPS black hole, Harry! Mail circles your mailbox in 20-mile radii and stops in to visit all the post offices in surrounding communities for days before it accidentally ends up at your post office. Dollars to doughnuts, when the 'list of destinations that are exceptions to the 2-day standard,' your zip code will be right at the top of the list! Right up there with Bemidji, MN, Lower Pelican Rapids, MS, and Two Empty Cups, NM. Just sayin.'
Harry P. Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I guess that's the price I pay for living in a backwater burg like Chicago...
High octane Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 It WAS delivered in two days Harry. Its just that they (post office) picks which two days. LOL!

charlie8575 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Unfolding over the last week, I didn't get admitted into UMASS-Amherst's day MBA, which would have been a free ride save about $1000 over two years. They'll take me for the night program, but there's no tuition assistance available, just loans I don't want right now- got enough of those. This, however, was offset a little by UMASS Lowell, who will admit me for fall, and might still be able to get me a grad assistantship, which they offer for day, night and online courses. I'm meeting with them Thursday to assess my options. The end goal for me to continue working in education is to at least adjunct at the community colleges, which I think is where I fit best interest-wise and academically; I need the second piece of paper to do it, though. As it happens, where I might have to teach another year of high school (*GAG!*) UML might be better because it's within driving distance of all the schools that have had openings so far this year. I suppose it's a case of one door closes, another opens. Charlie Larkin
Austin T Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Putting more spaghetti in the bowl then I could eat . That moment where you have only two options: Admit defeat and throw it away or force it down and not appear weak.

They have the worst scheduling system on the planet. 2 in the afternoon on a saturday: 3 cashiers. 8am on a monday morning: 9 cashiers.
