martinfan5 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Again, not my role here to defend Revell, but a number if people who've built their '57 Ford Custom or the '50 Olds Custom would suggest that those are among the best new-tooled kits on the market at the moment. Not to mention that they are selling for 1/2 to 1/3 the price of 1/24th scale newly tooled imported kits. But it's nothing more than a theoretical argument at this point anyway, because Revell hasn't announced any new light duty truck subjects that I am aware of....TB What imported kits are trying to compare the 50 Olds and 57 Ford too ?
Rob Hall Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 (edited) What imported kits are trying to compare the 50 Olds and 57 Ford too ? Exactly...Tamiya doesn't build '50s American subjects. Besides, the recent Revell kits with widely acknowledged accuracy issues I was referring to were the '90 Ford Mustang and '70 Cuda (the Cuda being better than past R-M Cuda efforts, but still w/ multiple accuracy issues). Fabrux Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Something I thought of, and only because I have one of the Hilux kits: will this have a chrome tree? Given that armour is their primary subject, I'm not sure Meng has much if any experience in chrome plating. The Hilux kits show chromed bumpers, grilles, and roll bars on the box art but there is no chrome to be found in the box. Given the expected price point, their target market would probably use Alclad anyway, but the lack of chrome could scare off casual builders.
hooknladderno1 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Anyone else having trouble with this address? I keep getting a "This page can not be displayed". David

One sprue APPEARS to be set up for chrome - wheels, outer part of grill, bumpers - but that doesn't mean it will. The engine looks very interesting too - they could have done the Tamiya/Aoshima thing with a couple parts/insert - but it's got a full on, full detail deal! What? Separate U bolts for the rear end? Oh my.
Rob Hall Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I would assume they will be doing a chrome tree...since they aren't doing the base work truck version w/ black trim. That would be a big oversight not to have chrome plating.
martinfan5 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I would imagine that they will chrome the one parts tree

explorer2770 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I might just have to wait on my brush trucks now that I know this kit is coming along. I really hope someone can get Meng to make a F-350 regular cab 165" wheelbase DRW chassis with ambulance package...oh wait, never mind, I'll have to do that conversion myself. I'm going to hate taking a razor saw to that cab since I've been want a crew cab kit for 15 years. Better start playing the lotto so I can afford these kits when they come out.
RodneyBad Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 As soon as I can find a good cheap dealer, I'll be grabbing 2 or 3..
Jordan White Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I would assume the tree with the grille and wheels will be chromed. As for the wheels, they are both chrome plated and 18" on the 1:1. The 5-spokes are found on the XLT, while the 7-spokes are found on the King Ranch model. However, the actual wheels have 8-spokes, so dunno what went wrong there.

Hayabusa Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 (edited) I like what the people at Meng are producing. I also like the fact that we have a new player in the 1/24-1/25 scale car/truck field. However, I agree with Tim Boyd concerning Revell. martinfan5 wrote: "What imported kits are trying to compare the 50 Olds and 57 Ford too ?" Good question. If Revell did not produce these kits, would they even exist? As new-tool-kits? As far as accuracy issues goes, even Meng get their share of criticism from time to time. From the Meng homepage: "This 1/24 scale Ford F-350 Super Duty plastic model kit replicates the accurate exterior of this muscle truck. The precision and complex engine bay is fully represented. Two options of the wheel hubs and side steps are provided. A moveable tailgate and a bed extender are included. Realistic metal plated parts are provided for the engine grille and wheel hubs. Metal refelctive mirror film is provided for the rear view mirrors. Lenght: 277 mm Width: 112 mm" Edited January 31, 2014 by Hayabusa
Fabrux Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Sounds like they are doing a chrome sprue after all, excellent.
W-409 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Wow this came as a Big surprise! I've never heard anything about Meng, but the comments I've read of their kits' quality got me really interested in. To me it looks very good, and it would be a great Race Car Hauler. Only thing is that I certainly hope that it won't be $50-$70, because if it really is that expensive, I'm not going to get the "One of these" as I would if it was regular $20-$30... These Trucks really aren't my favorite subjects, so if the price is insane, I'll prefer a Jo-Han kit.

mikemodeler Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 A diorama idea for some ambitious modeller... mike Looks like another 6.0 Powersmoke Diesel has bit the dust! You are right, it could make for a great diorama!

Scott - Elm City Hobbies Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 While I haven't received a release date or pricing on these yet, don't expect these to be cheap. Their 1/35 trucks are in the $40 range, and are curbside (albeit they usually have a ton of stuff for the bed, or a big a$$ gun and figures with it) so a fully detailed out 1/24 truck with full engine detail and such, look for these to be in the $60-$80 range. Pricey yes, but this kit will be the quality of a high end Tamiya auto kit, and with that comes a price, but having quite a few Meng kits in the stash (1/35 armor), I can tell you they are some of the best kits on the market, and are worth every penny for them.

JamesW Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I already struck a deal with my lhs to hold a case for me when they are released.
niteowl7710 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I already struck a deal with my lhs to hold a case for me when they are released. You guys both realize that a "case" of kits like this tend to be like 30-40 per case because the long flat boxes fit more per box...right? Example - This is a case of Aoshima Corollas, you'll note it's 40 to a case.
JamesW Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Ok, well i and the lhs are basing it on 12 per case. So theyll have 12 on hold for me.
