It’s gold and looks more like a 50s phone. Don’t really use it much though because the ringer sounds awful and it is startling. And I’m hoping my great uncle will sell me his old RCA rabbit ear tv he has out in the garage. Would be cool to try and rig it up so that I can watch whatever on it. Pretty sure no channels work on it any more but one channel worked back in 2022. 1

So many things that we were accustomed to as kids have gone to the way side and are oblivious to today's youth. The Service station alert bell, the rotary phone, and tv rabbit ears to name a few. My dad also sported the curb finders on his cars back in the day. fond memories.. A few years ago I picked up my teenaged nephew in the old Lotus, which has conventional old door handles (grab the handle, push the button with the thumb). He stared at the door handle for a moment, tentatively reached out a hand but then withdrew it, looking puzzled, entirely unsure of how to use it. He was stumped. I watched this in amazement. It's crazy the once everyday things that will drop out of the social consciousness. 1

I spent a week in Lisbon a few years ago and spent some time walking about with the camera, shooting anything of interest. I encountered a police car parked at the curb, the officers were across the street talking to someone. As I passed it I took a picture, then moved on. Then I heard shouting and running, and turned to see the two policemen running towards me full-tilt, and they weren't happy. The angrily asked me a rash of stern questions about who I was and why I was taking pictures of their car, etc. Caught a bit off-guard, I stammered out my explanation, tourist and car enthusiast just taking pictures blah blah blah, but despite my story and sincere, heart-felt apologies, they weren't softening up much. I showed them the pictures on my camera screen, and deleted the photo and demonstrated it was gone. I was concerned they would confiscate it, but they seemed satisfied the photo was gone and eventually went back to their car. Enjoy Portugal. I loved it there.
The Junkman Posted Saturday at 08:44 PM Posted Saturday at 08:44 PM Keep this up and we'll have to start an "Old-Older" game. (You're old if you remember this and older if you remember that) 1
TonyK Posted Saturday at 08:49 PM Posted Saturday at 08:49 PM (edited) Not to drift too far off the subject but for some reason a thought came to me how we don't hear the dreaded "turn the key to start the car when it's already running" sound. I wonder if the push button starters won't allow this. I'm not gonna test it! Now that my brain has caught up to my typing I realize the start button also shuts the engine off so there wouldn't be a chance of that old grinding sound. Edited Saturday at 08:57 PM by TonyK

Thanks for the tip!😬 I was going to take a picture of one but decided not to for some reason.🥵 Our tour guide did tell us that we couldn’t take pictures of a bank. 1

Yeah, the button only sends a start request to whichever module runs the starter, typically the PCM. You don't even have to hold the button down until it starts. It will quit cranking when the PCM sees that the engine is running by the cam / crank signals.

The mention of your experience taking a picture of a Police car while abroad reminded me of an experience while visiting Porta Virata Mx. in the early '80's. We were walking around the beautiful city and had enjoyed a few of their Margaritas and taking pictures of the scenery. Almost the same circumstance as you mentioned also happened with us. I guess we were just being "Ugly American Tourists" as that was the expression at the time. 2

89AKurt Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Pictures or it didn't happen. 🤪 (the traveling abroad tangent is interesting) JDM at the Prescott Cars & Coffee. There have been a bunch around lately, Embry Riddle University is here. I know Skyline is a halo car. But I never heard of much less seen one of these wagons. At first I thought it was a custom Volvo TR5. The young man with this Subie seemed excited that I knew something about Imprezas. Different engine. Notice I'm pointing to the Arizona Hysterical Vehicle copper plate, anything over 25 years old. Makes me feel really old, I read about these in magazines when they were new. It's just funny to me seeing Japanese cars with these plates now. But I'm glad to see the next generation being into them, better than some alternatives like hoarding model kits. 🙄 1
Suburban_Hooligan Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago what's up with the 90's cars having historic vehicle license plates? didn't think AZ had emissions testing (?) 1
Rob Hall Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago (edited) 23 minutes ago, Suburban_Hooligan said: what's up with the 90's cars having historic vehicle license plates? didn't think AZ had emissions testing (?) Well, the 90s were 26-35 years ago.... in most states, 25 years old is enough to get a historic plate. And I don't think historic plates necessarily have any correlation to emissions testing. I do know 15 years ago my sister had to get her '84 and '91 Mercedes tested every 2 years in Phoenix. Edited 6 hours ago by Rob Hall 2

Depends on which County, what we call The State Of Maricopa (Phoenix) and Pima (Tucson) have emission testers who will wreck your stick shift old car (paging Russell Cook). I live in Yavapai County which is considered rural, no tests required. So everyone is retiring and moving here from California so they could have cool old vehicles. And you are showing your age too. 🤪 1

Yep - see my Oct 28 "irk" post about the model years exception, along with busting shifters. The way this county handles emissions testing, it makes me ever more want to get some kind of pre'67 classic just to avoid having that testing done.
