It's the 21st Century guys. This way of parking, taking up 2 spaces, parking a million miles away from your destination is unnecessary. We have mobile phones with cameras, dash cams etc.

When my car was brand new & I parked in a dodgey area/parking lot I'd simply take a picture of the car/s next to mine ( if any were parked next to mine ) of it's licence plates ( front & back ), go do whatever it was I intended to do. When I returned I'd check my car for scratches/dings etc & if none were present I'd delete the pics & leave. Simple. Everyone with a mobile phone can do this. It's pure evidence.... If your car is damaged ??

Good luck with that. Impossible to prove who did it.

Door dings, scratches, and rock chips are part of life---can't avoid them.

Not true at all. My Mustang is 12 years old and is over 100,000 miles and doesn't have a mark on it. Why, because I never park in with the everybody else, never ever. I'd rather walk from the far corner of the lot. (I need the exercise anyway!) Also, whenever I can, I park in the last space on right hand end of a row, as close to the line or curb as I can. 90% of the cars that park next to me will have only the driver which means opening the door on the other side from my car.

Not if you've got a dash/parcel shelf cam continually recording

If you're that paranoid, you're probably not driving the car that much anyway.

I'm far from it. I'm insured so it doesn't bother me. Was just saying ( dash cams etc ) can & are useful in circumstances where people feel the need to keep their car ding/dent/scratch free ??

Before we got hit head-on my wife's GTI was 8 yrs. old and had 54K miles on it with no parking lot damage. And I live in Queens, N.Y. The success ?

As stated, park away from the crowd and walk. And find end spots as mentioned.

Park on corner spots to minimize bumper damage from people who park by feel….

NEVER valet park. NEVER! I tip them to stay away from my stuff…..

Keep it clean and neat. If it looks like BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH, people will oblige and treat it accordingly.

Dad and I saw a 4th gen Trans Am convertable a week or so ago at the local Culvers that had parked sideways across 2 if not 3 parking lanes.......too bad we were bringing food home and were in my 200, if we were eating in and had my Cherokee, I would have been tempted to do the same as the guy in the white Cherokee.

Oh yea, I forgot about that. Many years ago my wife and I went to a restaurant in the Mustang that had valet parking only. I said to the kid; "Look, if you park my car I'm going to give you a $1.00 tip, if you let me part it I'll give you ten bucks,"

No problem, I parked it myself. :D

My Miata has sustained more damage parked in my own garage than anywhere else.

I hung out with a wholesome crowd when I was a teenager. If we happened to be cruising in one of our beaters and spotted an idiot parked across a couple of spaces like that, well...

Funny... I was listening to NJ101 talk radio on my way home from work today. They were talking about that video and then opened the hour up for people to call in and describe what they did to bad parkers. Some amazing stories.

During my college years (back in the stone age), one of my odd-jobs was parking Valet at a fancy restaurant. The parking lot was small, and thus parking spots were at a premium, so the valets just hated it when patrons tried to park themselves. Whenever that happened, we would park other cars right next to them in such a manner that it would be *impossible* for them to open their doors. When they finally came to us, looking for help, we took our sweet time about it and made sure they got the hint about tipping, etc. It's never smart to tick-off the parking lot crew!

Guys like Drew who asked to park on their own, and were kind enough to offer a tip, were generally allowed to park wherever they wanted so long as they followed instructions and didn't mess up our parking "system". Most of the guys doing that job were car nuts, and we understood if someone didn't want us to drive their car.

Reading this thread brought back a lot of humorous memories :-)

Ok guys I don't live in a big city but do people still key cars??

In this day & age, they probably don't bother "keying" so much. If they're going to vandalize you're car, they'll do some real damage! Courtesy of the generation who have pretty much abandoned the fist fight in favor of the Uzi! Steve

To me the sad thing is people are so self absorbed. To take 2 spots in a crowded lot is inexcusable. However why should one care about others when we are in our own little world communicating with our cell phones and social media. God forbid we communicate face to face. Wouldn't want to depend on self absorbed people in a major calamity when they only car about themselves

I park way in back of lots, to avoid the scum who have banged the BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH out of my wife's car.

I never take 2 spots but I park away from the masses.

Hard to do with the newer electronic SmartKey/SmartFob keyless "modules" that have replaced keys.

In most cases, they have a key that can be ejected from the fob in case the battery dies in the car or fob.

Plus, people usually have at least a house key on their keychain as well.

I've seen people break tail light lenses...they cost a lot, but not enough to meet the deductible most people have. About ten years ago, a girl I worked with had her car keyed. She was seeing a married man, and the Mrs. found out. She'd just bought the car, too...it was one of those last-generation Mercury Cougars, the little front-wheel-drive coupe. Wifey didn't just scuff the clear coat...a lot of her handiwork went right down to the primer...

Just remember that you may be caught on camera when you decide to commit the vandalism. The guy taking two spots is a jerk. If you resort to vandalism you are comitting a crime and the owner has right to press charges.Me I would just walk away and hope the idiot finds that somebody else that thinks they deserve 2 spots.

parking like a jerk warrants some sort of retribution, but keying, or damaging someone's car is childish. If you key someone's car, you're a bigger Ahole than they are.
