Decal scripts.....blech. Wonder if MCG's photo-etch has the right scripts?

2282.gif

I don't have the kit yet so I don't know all of the necessary scripts, and Bob's site says this is for the AMT '57 Ford.. but there are Ranch Wagon and FORD scripts. What is on the kit decal sheet that's not on the photo etc sheet above? Everything tastes better with Ranch!

Someone else mentioned turning it into a 4 door wagon... I know there is a big difference in roof shape between a Nomad and a 2 door or 4 door wagon. I don't know how that works with Fords. But I'm sure that picking up a Jimmy Flintstone wagon would be an easier conversion.

I am going to go with this kit for the Fourth of July Weekend build. I will do a street machine, so I can use some custom colors and different wheels. This way, I don't have to deal with the decal emblems. It will make a fun build. I will post lots of pics and report on how it all goes together. It won't be as involved as my original plan for it, but it should go together well enough to be a good three day build.

Correct back bumper found for the 57 Del-Rio! Just find and buy the Johnny Lightning 57 Ford Courier delivery wagon.

Charlie, I picked 2 up on ebay, because I never seem to catch those kits when they arrive at ST Marlborough.

Tom, PE scripts cost $22.99 plus ship, which is more than I paid for the Revell kit. MCG etch scripts seems to have all the scripts to replace the decals.

Half the decal sheet in the Del Rio kit are police related.

I forgot to mention that the rear lift gate is molded solid to the back of the Del Rio. Having said that, it is not a separate piece you can add to a Squire kit missing the lift gate. Also, the shape is rounded, and it will be some work separating it to open it and make it working. I was hoping it was separate like the hood.

Well, being one that cannot afford pe, I am glad they put script decals in the kits.

Personally, I prefer them molded-in. I've actually found that using the script decals over molded detail looks really good. The decals are two-dimensional and don't look right to me. The raised surface gives it a good appearance.

eBay buyers love this kit. Every time I watch one where a dozen or less are available for about $20 each, they all sell within 12-24 hours.

Only one problem: The Johnny Lightning Courier is 1/24, and truly so--that bumper will not fit the 1/25 scale Del Rio very well. In addition, bear in mind that bumper guards were optional back then--not every '57 Ford had them.

Art, are you 100% sure those bumper guards were optional. See my earlier postings here. I have been doing some research on this. And I can not find anything from Ford Motor Company sources, or anyone else claiming that those bumper guards were optional equipment. Or standard equipment for that matter. I'd like proof of your statement on this one.

and the license plate lights were in the bumper guards....

I can't think of a single state that didn't require the plate to be lit up...

Though possible I suppose, the idea of someone going to the bother of ordering his new (rather up-scale) wagon without bumper guards strikes me as highly unlikely.

Hard to imagine dealers or owners of new cars jerry-rigging thier own lights either....or ignoring the empty holes in the bumper.

Ah Mike, go to 1957ford.com and look at a few pictures of the plain, non-Custom series Rancheros and Couriers. You'll see several of them without rear bumper guards. Whether this is a correct factory setup or not, I don't know. If you could a rear bumper without guards and some other provision for lighting a license plate I do not know. And I'm not so sure that you did you a license plate light in all 48 states at the time. Several states still allowed new vehicles with only one taillight and no turn signals in the late 50's and early 60's. Also, look at the '58 Ford wagons, Rancheros, and Couriers. They did not have bumper guards. Front or rear. Different bumpers from '57. And they do look like, even without bumper guards, as having a provision for license plate lights. So who is wrong here? And who is right? I don't know. It would be nice to get a definitive answer.

Of course it's not really all that important Scott....I thought it odd that Revell removed them instead of fixing them, I was mostly just curious why they did it that way.

Of course I think I'm right about the guards :) and for the reasons I gave.

So....Now I'm wishing the fronts had been "optional" too as it really cleans up the front of a 57 to leave 'em off (mild custom style).

Maybe the Ranchero version will be even better.....

Many times, when bumper guards were not ordered, factories simply filled the previously punched hole with a chrome plated round headed bolt--used to see that a lot back in the day.

I did look through Google Images and saw that the license plate lights are indeed on the top inside of the bumper guards. I saw one photo of a junker, and there was a big hole there, so they are inset. Pretty far apart, and a distance from the plate so I don't know how good a job they did. I checked a few sources... a '57 Ford brochure, and the Old Cars / Krause Standard Catalog of American Cars, that lists out all the options including their original price, and they don't list license plate lights as an option, so I assume they were standard.

I found this on the Internet so assume it's correct:

By 1928, at least 38 states already required license plate lights.

The federal agency "NHTSA incorporated license plate lamps into FMVSS 108 in 1968", making it a nationwide requirement that all vehicles manufactured in the future for U.S. sale would need to have license plate lights.

When I bought my '64 F100 that came from Montana it had a step bumper with the plate bolted to it - no lights anywhere..

Remember, a lot happened in the late '60s with automotive safety laws & regulations - license lights, seat belts, back up lights...

Tower is listing the 57 wagon as "discontinued" ! I'm assuming it's a mistake?

Maybe with everyone whining about a back bumper without bumper guards... Revell went and discontinued it. Lol

Maybe...look how they reacted to the much bigger upset around that infamous Mustang.

Oh wait, they still make it AND a 2nd version too. :)

I noticed the Tower description of the wagon said it had custom wheels and disc brakes too, so maybe they're just kinda confused?

I have the correct rear bumper from the Revell Chopped Ranchero. Wonder if it fits?

Let us know, Andy.

If it does, would any of the resin-casters be willing to cast it? I'll buy one.
