atomicholiday Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Thinking about building another one of these. I've built the Revell kit (twice actually) over the years. The last time I built it was about 15 years ago, and looking at the finished product, I can do much better work now. So, how does the AMT kit compare to the Revell kit?
Snake45 Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I've built the (now) Revell (ex-Monogram) 1/24, have several copies of the AMT 1/25 in the pile, and have the newer Revell 1/25 snapper on the bench as we speak. The Revell snapper has the most accurately shaped body of the three, except for the hood CI bulge, which is a little undersized. It's definitely my favorite of the three, but then I'm fine with "cubside" (no engine) style.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 (edited) I like the way the finished headlights look much better on the Revellogram kit than the AMT version. The Revell body is reasonably well proportioned, but it has mold parting lines on the sides that can be a lot of work to get gone without wrecking the character lines that are supposed to be there. I'm not wild about the big-block engine in the Revell version either. It has some really wonky angles on the heads where the headers go, and a couple other things I've forgotten. The chrome valve covers are very nice, however. This is my build of the Revellogram kit, with a 3" top chop. The AMT kit looks to me (though I don't have one on the shelf at the moment) to have some oddly exaggerated not-correct sculpting on the body sides, judging from pix of built kits. Here's more shots of this champagne metallic one built by Túlio Lazzaroni (below) on this forum. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/?showtopic=84581 This is the real car. Notice the very subtle sculpting of the fender bulges, which is not like the AMT kit pictured above. Edited January 7, 2015 by Ace-Garageguy
atomicholiday Posted January 7, 2015 Author Posted January 7, 2015 Bill those both look great! Really nice builds. I do see what you mean about the body sculpting. Kinda funky looking. And I noticed the headlights looked better on the box art of the Revell kit. But you know how box art can be sometimes. So far I'm leaning towards another Revell kit. Always had fun with that one. I probably should have started this thread in the "Reviews" section. My bad. Mods, feel free to move it if you want.
TFchronos Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 While I can't say anything against AMT's Chevelle model directly I can say I've always had better luck with Revel/Monogram models in general.
Bob Ellis Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I sanded the weird bulges on the AMT Chevelle, Model Car Garage can replace the SS logos. I always thought the 1971-1972 MPC Chevelle had the best Chevelle body. You could make it into a 70.
ZTony8 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I've always been put off by the shape of the Monogram/Revell kit at the front fender/bumper/headlamp extension area. It's always looked too squarish to me.The AMT kit looks closer to correct to me.
Yo Jutt Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Hi all! I recently ordered the revel 1970 chevelle heavy Chevy. Was just wondering if anyone out there put it together, and if so how it went for them? Anything to watch out for? I noticed there are a lot of sweet parts! Thanks for your time guys any input and thoughts welcome!
Luc Janssens Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Built one as a teen and being a ex Monogram kit it goes together without any problems, The only thing I recall is that you have to spread the rear quarter panels a bit to install the rear valance (use leftover sprue cut to lenght and remove when the glue has dried)
Snake45 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 I built one and don't recall any particular assembly problems. The stripe decal didn't fit too well around the CI flap door but I touched it up with paint. Not the most accurate kit in the world but a fun and troublefree build.
Yo Jutt Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Thanks guys! Glad I didn't get a lemon!! I'm not to worried about the decals. I'm going to try and go for the fast and furious primer gray look.
5.0man Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Is this Baldwin Motion Chevelle really 1/25 scale?
Snake45 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Is this Baldwin Motion Chevelle really 1/25 scale? No, it's the old Monogram 1/24 kit.
horsepower Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Yes, I bought it believing it was a new tool 1/25 release, and after opening the box and messing with it for a couple of hours relegated it to the parts only junkyard.
Sledsel Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 The Revellogram kit always looked to flat in the headlight area. Now seeing the pic of the actual car and kit pic together, I see that it is. Nice chopped version.
Nova-ss Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 So does any one have snapper rewiew.like parts, chassis plate.is the rearend, front separate. Do they look the part.snap kits don't bother me.I just wsnt to know and see pictures.thank you all.
Snake45 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I have the snapper painted and rubbed out..I think I got the wheels and interior done before I went on my latest hiatus. Basically I just need to decal and detail the body and nail it together. But I'm pretty much liking the way it's looking.
JS23U Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I sold my Revell snapper because I think the roof looks too round, kind of a bubble top I'd rather accept the fender bulges than a bubbly roof.
gray07 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Ive always liked the monogram, maybe we need a in depth look at all the chevells made, like we do on some of the trucks.
Stray Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Is this kit definitely 1/25? Or is a re-pop of the Monogram 1/24 Heavy Chevy? Has anyone built it and how is the detail of the kit?
Snake45 Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 It's the old Monogram 1/24 SS454 with a new hood and maybe a few other parts. '80s vintage. Not a great kit, not a bad kit.
Stray Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Ah there is already a thread for this. Oops! A bit rude of them to market it as 1/25th! I have one of the heavy chevy kits and I remember sitting it side by side with AMT's 70 Chevelle and it was markedly larger.
69NovaYenko Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 (edited) Thinking about building another one of these. I've built the Revell kit (twice actually) over the years. The last time I built it was about 15 years ago, and looking at the finished product, I can do much better work now. So, how does the AMT kit compare to the Revell kit? I stumbled upon a YouTube video review/comparison of AMT v.s. Revell Snap-Tite '70 Chevelle SS 454 kits. https://youtu.be/mwqSnEiTRA8 Hope this helps. Also, I have the AMT Jack Reacher '70 Chevelle kit. Even though I`m partial to Revell kits I have to admit the AMT kit has a great set of pad printed white lettered Goodyear GT Polyglass GT L60 x 15 tires. Edited June 6, 2015 by 69NovaYenko
