rmvw guy Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) I decided to buy a vintage AMT model box at a show/swap meet for $10 just for the box to display with my AMT ‘32s. What I got was the box, directions, and an unpainted kit with some glue marks and some parts missing. I thought, “I might as well try and build one like the box art since I like it so much.” I decided on the roadster and I wish I had the decals for this one. From the directions I realized I had a 1960 model kit. They had a picture of all the other AMT model kits available in 1960 on the direction sheet.(cool) The ’60 Edsel was my first AMT model in 1960 when I was 10 years old and it was on the sheet! I did the best job I could with the parts I had. I used the Hemi engine with no wiring , no generator bracket, throttle linkage, or extra parts. I kept it a simple build. I shaved the door handles, added louvers to the rear, painted the white walls, made wire braces to the front fenders and headlights using paper clips, and that’s about it. Paint is Duplicolor red, black, and white. I know! I should have used Testors. Edited February 9, 2015 by rmvw guy
rmvw guy Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 The other model is an older build of the stock version. What I think is cool about the vintage kit is, it had the front fender pockets for two spares for the stock version and chrome wire wheels, later eliminated on reissues. My plan is to use these parts on a future build like the other car on the box.
rmvw guy Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 It was another low stress, fun build of an old classic. Hope you enjoy all the photos and have a smile on your face after viewing. As always, thanks for looking. I guess this is the money shot really. I think it was worth the $10. Tell me what you think of my work. Criticisms, comments and sarcastic remarks are kindly welcome. I'm a big boy, I can take it.
doctor phillips Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I feel like I just took a pleasant ride back to my youth. Thanks for posting this Ron! I enjoyed the models, too.
larry ray Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I dont care what kind of paint you used. I like it. It all so reminds me of my Youth. Thanks for sharing. Larry
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Big smile here. Love seeing an old kit built up simply, for no-stress fun, and looking so good. I think I may have to try doing one like this.
TooOld Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 My only complaint is that I don't have one ! That is such a cool looking model . . . you made my day . Thanks !
wayne swayze Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Yes.....there IS a big smile on my face! Thanks for the warm and fuzzy moment.
bobthehobbyguy Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Very cool. Great preservation of the past. Great trip down memory lane. The old AMT kits are fun to build.
rmvw guy Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Thanks everybody! There is a big smile on my face right now Thanks to you guys and the fact that I just ordered the decals from here http://www.ebay.com/...=item462f150e7f, Thanks Bob for the tip. I will post more pictures later with the decals applied.
Foxer Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) Bring back Annual Kits! edit: On second thought, not Annual .. every 5 years .. or they'd just be re-releasing the same kit for 5 years. Edited January 27, 2015 by Foxer
rmvw guy Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Bring back Annual Kits! edit: On second thought, not Annual .. every 5 years .. or they'd just be re-releasing the same kit for 5 years. Yea I know Mike, I already have five and now I want two more, I love 'em! Now I want to build the modified shown on the side of this box since I am getting the decals, and another stock roadster using the fenders from the vintage kit. I've never seen a reissue with the two fenderwells for spares like this one. Seriously, I wish they would bring back all of these.
Speedfreak Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Great job Ron, I love how it looks. I like where your head is at with this!
espo Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Ron, Thanks for the memories. Like you, this was my first kit at about the same time. I like how you used the kit's louvers. I never was able to get them to look right on anything.
Danno Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Good job! Love 'em. I had every one of the kits released that year . . . new. Of course, I had every one of the '58 annuals and the '59 annuals, too. Great memories.
Earl Marischal Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Love it! Great work saving an old kit. steve
Jon Haigwood Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I have a AMT 32 roadster kit in a bag that I picked up at the last swap meet. It has the molded in rear axle and I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it. But you inspired me to do a old style basic build and just have fun with it. Great work thanks for the inspiration
rmvw guy Posted January 29, 2015 Author Posted January 29, 2015 Thanks again guys for all the great comments. I found this gem on another thread. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=98295&hl= This is a bit of nostalgia for me. I had forgotten building one of these when I was just 8 years old. That would make this kit my first model car ever. I love it that they are now bringing some of these early kits back to life for some of us old guys. I sure made a mess of my first model. All of this time I thought the '60 Edsel was my first car model kit.
unclescott58 Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Great build(s) of a great kit. Still one of my favorite kits. Scott
rmvw guy Posted February 9, 2015 Author Posted February 9, 2015 Thanks again. I applied the new decals and shot a few photos today. They are a litle dark since these pictures were taken in my garage. Not much Sun here today.
