mike 51 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) You may get it faster then I do , and it depends on when HLJ gets shipped out. I can be patient now that I know it's coming for sure (and it's gonna be cheap too) . Thanks for the info provided by you "experienced" HLJ customers. Edited March 30, 2015 by mike 51
Exotics_Builder Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Just logged on my computer and I got the notification that my order is processed.
250 Testa Rossa Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) Hoping it's gonna be available at the Long Beach Grand Prix because Tamiya has a booth there, and they sell a ton of their products. Edited March 30, 2015 by 250 Testa Rossa
niteowl7710 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Sent mine along with the other 23 things in my Personal Warehouse over to process for FedEx shipping. $87.01 to ship 24 items - 2 P/E sets, 6 sets of decals and 16 kits works out to $3.62 per item and if they get it out tomorrow it'll probably be here by Friday. WORKS FOR ME!
Pete J. Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 I've been off the internet since Sunday but I see mine was just charged out and sent to the private warehouse. $28.72 prior to shipping as advertised. Screaming good deal. Got to get it and a couple of other bits from them on the way. If this price is close to the standard, they will sell a ton of these. May even be better than the Enzo, Tamiya's all time best selling 1:24 scale auto.

Daddyfink Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 I just paid $74.53 for two with shipping! Can't wait to get them!
Bennyg Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Well I'm happy paying $49 australian including postage. Won't get it locally at all. Ben
GeeBee Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Got the email from HLJ to say my two kits are on there way to me .... Looked at the HLJ website and there showing low stock on these now
Pete J. Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) I just paid $74.53 for two with shipping! Can't wait to get them! Jesse- Mine are on their way also. I guess we are going to have a real Merc-out at the next meeting! I wonder if shipping is directly tied to the destination. When I went to shipping, the cheapest option was FedEx express. Under those conditions, why would I make any other choice? Is EMS or SAL cheaper in other locations? Edited April 2, 2015 by Pete J.
mike 51 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) I think shipping is based on the weight of the kit....they (HLJ) couldn't quote a shipping cost until the weight of the Merc was known. Edited April 2, 2015 by mike 51

Is EMS or SAL cheaper in other locations? SAL , or Surface Air Lift is done by the postal service, its the slowest and cheapest shipping option , it has a weight and size limit, and I believe the weight limit is 2 kilograms, it goes by air to the destination counrty, but I do believe it has a low priority and only goes if there is room for it. Once it arrives at the countrys point of entry, it is then transportered via ground to the destination location. For models kits, you can get two, maybe three in SAL box. EMS, is Express Mail Service, price is also set by weight, so the more you ship, the more it can cost, but for example, up to about 6 kits, EMS will be cheaper than FedEx, after that FedEx will be the cheaper option in most cases, of course, it all depends on what is going in the box. EMS works just like Express mail in the US, it goes by air the entire trip 99% of time. EMS transit time is 3-7 days SAL is up to I think three months. Edited April 2, 2015 by martinfan5

That should be correct but when it came time to ordering time it wasn't and that is what has me baffled. The cheapest shipping turned out to be FedEx 2 day. Here is the break down. Two 300 SL kits - 6720 yen($57.68), two boxes of Tamiya bottles, 2898 yen($24.87), shipping 3570 yen($30.64). Total - 13188 yen($113.19). Yen exchange rate on my PayPal account for this transaction was 116.512 yen/dollar. The shipping is for FedEx. SAL was $31.75 and EMS was $41.61. Only thing I can come up with is it depends upon how close to the port of entry I am and that would be within 50 miles of the port of Los Angels. Everything here made sense except the FedEx charge. I don't get it.
tim boyd Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Just got a package here from HLJ after getting a shipping confirmation ttwo days ago. Ya think it could be? It has to be. The package will be opened momentarily. I'm really excited. TB
khier Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Paid 6060 for two kits + 1580 SAL shipping = 7640 Yen. 19% VAT is yet to come. This makes roughly 9100 Yen which means approx. 70 EUR. I doubt it will be sold here for less than 40 EUR plus shipping.
tim boyd Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) top line impressions.... * a beautiful piece of work (as expected), such things as nearly invisible parting lines on the body, and much more accurate side vents, reflect the progress you'd expect vs. the old AMT . Al;so, the center body tucks way under which is not the case (and would have been difficult to accomplish with a one piece body given mid 1960's kit tooling technology). * if your frame of 300 SL model car reference is the AMT 1/25th scale kit (as is mine), your first reaction may be "boy this thing is big" (from looking at the body, and the tube framing assemblies). And after pulling out the AMT to compare, yes it (the Tamiya) really IS big, much moreso than I would have expected between 1/24th and 1/25th scale. (Maybe that AMT kit was a tad smaller than 1/25th??? (without breaking out the ruler to check)). I certainly won't be swapping the AMT Rudge wheels (as I had hoped) onto this Tamiya SL, that's for sure. * there aren't as many trees of parts as I would have expected after having looked over the instructions preview (thanks again for posting that above), but everything looks orderly and well laid out. * there are a couple of parts where two adjacent components are molded together (old Monogram style) rather than separately as I'd prefer, but that's about the only thing I could cite that falls short of expectations. * finally, the kits were securely packaged and arrived perfectly, but the kits themselves were not sealed. Is that normal procedure (e.g. because of customs) for kits mailed overseas? I don't have time right now to do an online preview of the kit, I'm sure some of you who are more familiar with Tamiya kits can do it better justice than I. If I get some time later, though, I may do a "retro" posting of the AMT kit innards. A little busy right now, but best case maybe I can start working on it next week. It's been quite some time since I've done a major Tamiya kit build...should be fun. TB Edited April 2, 2015 by tim boyd
Jantrix Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Wow. Not sure how I missed this. This is something I might actually shell out it's asking price for.
Pete J. Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 * finally, the kits were securely packaged and arrived perfectly, but the kits themselves were not sealed. Is that normal procedure (e.g. because of customs) for kits mailed overseas? TB Tim, nothing that Tamiya makes is "Factory Sealed" except the bags the parts come in inside the box.. All shrink wrapping is done at the regional distribution center. You may find this hard to believe, but in the hobby stores in Japan the kits aren't even taped shut. You can actually open them in the store and look at them before you buy. The sealed kit is very much an anywhere but Japan deal. All the stuff I get from HLJ in as it came out of the factory, which is no shrink wrap.

I don't get it. FedEx is done by weight AND volume. So what might have been considered heavy for EMS slotted into a certain dimensional box size at FedEx. If you play with the shipping screen (and you'll need about 18-20 model kits *cough*) you can add them one at a time and watch FedEx be REALLY expensive and then SAL and EMS creep up to it - eventually you lose the ability to SAL after 3-4 kits and EMS will become more expensive until you hit the next dimensional size and FedEx leaps ahead by about $15 but keep adding more kits and the weight in the EMS box will make it catch up and then pass it again until the next volume price hike. My 24 items are idling out at Memphis after clearing USCBP and will arrive after a short plane flight to Pittsburgh tomorrow morning. The difference between EMS & FedEx was about $3 and working as a Postal Contractor I try to keep my stuff out of the hands of USPS Lockheed-Martin automated sorters whenever fiscally possible...
