charlie8575 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Crank was probably standard, and keyed ignition an option or a feature of the LX and above trim levels? (J/K..I know Ford has been using LX for only 35 years or so as a trim level..) Speaking of different forms of ignitions, I had a rental this past weekend that retails for about $60k as it was equipped, yet it had a conventional key ignition instead of push-button start (and also a column shift). What did you have to rent, Rob, a Suburban? Charlie Larkin Crank. Barn-fresh. Love it. Sounds good, too. Charlie Larkin
southpier Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Saw the test shots at NNL--the radiator shell looks too egg-shaped to me, and I know what that should look like, considering I restored a '29 Tudor back 45-50 yrs ago. fifty years ago? wasn't that considered just a tune-up? this thread is headed down the Del Rio Road but fast!
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 this thread is headed down the Del Rio Road but fast! I forgot..."thou shalt not mention glaring errors because the model companies will all take their toys and go home". My bad.
Art Anderson Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I'm pretty sure the crank was in case of battery/starter failure...not a "trim" level kinda thing. Believe it or not, a hand crank was a feature of all Ford cars and trucks through at least 1940--ever notice the crank hole in the lower area of the grille on any 30's Ford? Mike's got it right, while all Ford cars, beginning with the Model A (Model T's had electric start as an option by the 20's) had electric starters, a removable hand crank was included, "just in case". 1928-31 Model A's did have, however, a swing-away cover plate over the hole in the radiator shell to hide the crank hole, or at least minimize it's visibilty, but on many unrestored cars, those went missing over the years. As an aside, I used to hand-crank my '29 A Tudor, just to show that I could--it took perhaps 2 turns of the crank for a cold start, but if the engine was warmed up, first time-every time! Art
Art Anderson Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 fifty years ago? wasn't that considered just a tune-up? this thread is headed down the Del Rio Road but fast! No matter, really. I'll probably be robbing '32 Fords for the grille shell in any event. Art
Bernard Kron Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 When I was a little boy we had a Renault Dauphine and it came with a crank hole and a crank in the tool kit.
Rob Hall Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 What did you have to rent, Rob, a Suburban? Charlie Larkin Close...a Tahoe..pretty sweet SUV.
DaveM Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 The Grille is a pretty important "Signature" part on that car. They really need to get it right, or it blows the whole look. With that said, I'm not sure if it is wrong. The other side looks about right, but the side facing the camera looks rounded. Like a lot of parts, you can't tell for sure until you have the part in your hands. (Or at least a perfect, straight on photo) I think the camera shot may be playing tricks on our eyes. (I hope it is) If the inside part of the shell is correct, then a curve on the outer can be sanded out in just a couple of minutes. That, of course leaves the builder with the option of rechroming or Alclad. I am a bit surprised that Revell didn't mold the shell separate from the radiator on this kit. I am going to back off on my pre orders until I see the kit in person. I have eight ordered, plus I live near a Revell preferred retailer, so I was going to grab one the day the are released. I am sure the kit will end up being very nice, but I am a bit wary about blowing a few Month's modeling budget on unseen Revell products. I will just grab one on release day and see if I should order the rest later. I will hold off on the eight until I have seen the kit. That's the best way to deal with new releases these days.

JTalmage Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Grille looks good to me... I'm still gonna try and scoop a lot of em up.
Ryan S. Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Would the chroming process with the clear coat and chrome thickness soften the heart shape on the radiator shell some? Perhaps its designed for that effect taken into account? Just a thought.
sfhess Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 More hand cranking. Not for the meek! Probably spinning a geared up flywheel.
tim boyd Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Agreed, and too heart-shaped at the inside top as well. Another one of the really important identifiers of this car that should be 100%. You guys amaze me! The kit is still several months away, and it's being critiqued already! Anyway, after seeing these posts, I pulled out the pictures of the test shot I built a year ago March and compared it to the picture of the real grille shell directly above, along with the '28/'29 Grille shells past from AMT, MPC, Revell and Monogram kits. Turns out that every one of these kit grilles is slightly different in details, but all are reasonably close to the picture. I agree that the grille shown in the parts tree picture above looks a little egg shaped, but the test shot sample is not egg-shaped at all. In fact, it looks as close or closer to the full size image above than any of the other grilles, including the "dip" in the center of the upper grille opening. Mind you, I was told that Revell has made changes and refinements to the kit since I did the test shot project for them, so it is certainly possible that the grille shell may have changed from what I saw. Bottom line? I realize that critiquing future kit releases is a very popular subject on this Form and that it generates a lot of interest and web traffic. Go ahead and continue to comment and speculate at will...but you (and I, for that matter) may be embarrassed (or not) when you actually get your hands on the real kit in a couple of months. . TIM
DaveM Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) Yup. Just like the "Inertia" starters on aircraft. Pretty nifty little mechanical system, but still takes someone who has eaten their wheaties to get it going. Sorry, this was a slightly delayed response to the post about the tank starting system using a geared up flywheel... Edited April 21, 2015 by DaveM

Dave Darby Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) Greg, I don't mind people using my photos, but I appreciate photographic credit being given. I took several shots (including this one) of this car at Goodguys in Des Moines in 2013. Edited April 21, 2015 by Dave Darby
mikemopar70 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 At nnl east, it was mentioned that it will be released for may 2015... Can't wait to get mine!☺
tim boyd Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) Apparently, several distributors got an April/May/June release sheet from Revell today showing the ship date as June 29...and the last day for dealer orders as June 10....for what it's worth. Those of you that still like the kit had best place your reservations soon, if you haven't done so already! TB Edited April 21, 2015 by tim boyd
southpier Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 don't count your egg shaped grilles before they hatch
Greg Myers Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Greg, I don't mind people using my photos, but I appreciate photographic credit being given. I took several shots (including this one) of this car at Goodguys in Des Moines in 2013. Considered it done. I found your picture to be the best example of the chubby grill on the '28-'29 model A . Sorry for the miss step.
