If you have kits in 1/24 kit bashing can be problematic. The Tom Daniels Street Fighter Chevy on my shelf has a very bad small block as well as the Badman '55. So lets throw around some ideas to get some other options going.

In your opinion, what are the best looking engines in 1/24 scale?

I'm kinda partial to the Chevy big blocks in the Monogram '39 Chevys, as well as the inline six in the Monogram '53 Chevy coupe.

Is this limited to kit engines?

Gonna say Aoshima's FA20 boxer engine, for being only top, its about as nice as you can get for a half engine

Yes. kit engines. Preferably whole.

For being a half engine, its very well detailed, and in some cases, more detailed then some whole engines.

Oooooo that's a good one. For modern engines, i've discovered the the Revell Audi R8 V10 has been a pleasant surprise.

I like the Big Block Chevy that comes in many Monogram kits (Like the '39 Chevy you mentioned). I believe that is 1/24 scale, though, it doesn't really matter even if you put 1/25 scale engine in 1/24 model, the scale difference is so small that it doesn't matter. Real problem, in my opinion, is that in some kits engines are way too small size compared to the size of the car and in some kits the engines might be a bit too big.

But in my opinion, the scale difference doesn't matter and I've always been mixing 1/24 and 1/25 parts on my builds.

i agree ^^^.

i don't know how practical it would be, but i'd like to see a design category in the forum. i understand some threads discuss this, but there are enough serious modelers here who could offer guidelines or criteria.

a perfect example is the engine proportion comment (above). i think scale difference can be used to advantage.

That's a really good point on the "scale difference" thing. Sometimes it makes a difference but sometimes it doesn't matter and most people couldn't tell or maybe it actually works out just looking right.

I used the Monogram 1/24 engine in my 1/25 GTO and to me, it looks about right.

BTW, that's a 1/25 scale chrome air cleaner from an MPC GTO kit in the 1/24 scale foam surround that came in the 1/24 Monogram kit. It fit in the depression for the original Monogram part like it was made for it.

I like the 350/ 350 combo in the Monogram '37 Coupe. Especially, with the TPI. About the only 1/24 kits that have bad engines are the Tom Daniels kits. Except for the TD Corvette.

I agree, sometimes it can. This 1/25 scale V10 looks just fine in this 1/24 Camaro, but it only works because of the size of the V10. That doesn't often work out.

I think so too. However doing the opposite, it where we tend to have issues. For the most part, a 1/25 scale engine looks decidedly small in a 1/24 scale body. Which brought me to this subject.

I recall I quite liked the 454 in Monogram's 70 'Heavy Chevy' Chevelle. I built one stock and one with the kit blower.

There's not really a lot of choice in 1/24 engines, especially old US iron...as everyone knows.

One that is very simple but looks good built and detailed is the nailhead Buick / Dynaflow trans combo in the old Monogram Orange Hauler kit.

Yep, it can be a problem sometimes, but not always. I built this '59 Simca Vedette a couple of years ago. 1/24 Scale body with 1/25 engine:

Okay, this is not a Full Size car of course, but it's not the smallest one ever made either.

I like the 289 from Revell's '66 Shelby Mustang. Its 1/24 scale but with a bit of work it fits in nicely to AMT's 1/25 scale Shelby Cobra.

The 427 in Revell's Owens Corning Corvette is nice too.

I really like the 1/25 scale 2jz engines in the amt (?) Fast and furious cars...yes they do need some aftermarket lovin' to truly shine, as their box stock turbos are hideous, but they look great.

This is an example with a hobby design single turbo on it in a 1/24 Scion FR-S:

The engines in the Revell / Monogram NASCAR,  Funny Car and many of the Pro Stock kits are quite nice and they are 1:24th scale.
Otherwise most of the Asian and European manufacturers do their kits in 1:24th scale and there are many nice engines there too.

Smallblock Chebbys are one of the most popular engines on Earth. Besides the little gem already mentioned in the Accurate Miniatures Corvettes, the engine in this old 1/25 Monogram '57 Chebby kit makes a good base. It comes with a factory-style Rochester mechanical fuel-injection setup, and an optional 2-4bbl crossram setup, looking a lot like the early Z-28. Manual trans, too.

Good point Bill. The '57s sister kit, the '56 Chevy, also has the same SBC but it comes with a standard dual quad intake as well as a blower option.
