The middle chassis yet another variation on the theme, coming from the original amt '69 fastback kit. One step up from the promo/annual single exhaust chassis, but has still has the pipes running under the axle and a pointy nose. Did they use this one also under the Iron Horse/Mach1 show cars as well or was it the newer style with the pipes above the axle? Since the newer chassis is relatively the most accurate and they have resurrected the '66 fastback with the 3D, can we hope they would also think about redoing the original '69 body? My 68 Mach1 has this chassis. It’s a glue bomb so I’m not 100% sure. The 68 Shelby chassis is pretty similar and I’m not sure if the Iron Horse used that one or the same one as in the Mach1 show car. Casey
Does anyone have a pic of the tire caps which were included in the original issue? I believe the included tires were the common Firestone Supremes:

It seems like a cheap short cut to just molding another set of tires.

Mark
Back then, annual kits came with four vinyl tires (on occasion, six, when two slicks were included). None of this "four stock tires, four custom tires, and two slicks" like some of them have now. No annual kit, AMT or Jo-Han, had more than four tires in the box prior to '64 except for the ones that included a trailer! AMT started messing with plastic tires in annual kits for '66. A few kits had plastic front tires, some had plastic slicks, and a few had those tire caps where a different look was desired for a racing version that wasn't a drag car. The plastic tires and slicks carried over into the altered wheelbase cars in '67 and '68, probably to help keep the price down on those. The first run of the '33 Willys coupe had plastic tires also, but later runs had vinyl. I guess buyers would tolerate plastic tires in sub-$2.00 retail price kits, but once you hit two bucks there had to be vinyl, even if they weren't as good as the plastic ones. I'm not sure if the Mustang sidewall caps were branded or not, but looking at the instruction sheet, it appears they were. I do have a sidewall cap with "Firestone Super Sports" in raised lettering, which I think was from a Corvair kit, but I was just curious what the Mustang caps looked like, and if they were Goodyear, etc.
Gramps46
The smaller tires on the right are Goodyears and say Stock Car Specials. The other caps are blank. I regret not providing that information in the original photo.

I did find a pic of Iron Horse parts that showed that chassis, but I'm not sure what was in the previous Mach 1, Autolite and Superstang versions. Sure was an interesting few years for amt's tooling department; going from the simple single exhaust chassis plate in the promo, '65/'66 annuals and Barris abominations to this chassis for '67/'68... ... and back to the same basic early(slightly altered) plate again for the '69 before revising it yet again for the '70 and following years. And somewhere during that time, the plate used currently was introduced Edited March 13, 2022 by mk11

The Mach I, Autolite Special, Superstang, and Iron Horse all have the same chassis. It's modified from the one that was used in the annual kits (dual exhaust detail added). They are pretty much the same kit, with detail changes and different optional parts (in the case of the Mach I, none at all if I remember right). Curiouser and curiouser ... Looking again at this Ironhorse chassis pic and Rex's pic a few posts back, it's obvious that there are actually five distinct versions of this chassis. Promo and annual, both single exhaust; '69 annual with dual exhaust under axle; show car chassis with corrected dual exhaust (note solid rear leafs and posts molded to upper rear of plate) and the currently used chassis, perhaps modified when coupe became a full detail kit in seventies, with opened up areas front and rear where the axles go through. mk11
Hmmmm ... just realized the blue chassis with the upper wheelhouse cutouts filled in makes it six distinct plates. It also now has a couple of short posts molded on the topside under the interior. Been around since the eighties, I think. I have gray and blue ones here. RH chassis from the countdown kit iirc. Will they hold the line on the chassis design with all the other revisions needed for the fastback or will we get revision #7? mk11
Looks like we have 7 variants of the amt early mustang chassis plate after all... here's the friction chassis, slots in between the promo and annual plates I guess.

Once it became the foundation for the 68 Shelby GT500, it never got used anywhere else. So for 69, they still had the promo chassis so that was used for the kit. Anybody ever check a 68 promo to see whats under it?
paul alflen
Old car fan, There wasn't a 1968 Mustang Promo. Only 1967 and 1969 from that wheel base. No Shelby promo either.
mk11
With the 'new' '66 fastback having arrived, a close look at the chassis plate reveals only a minor modification; removal of the two round spacers cast into the topside under the interior. So, another look at the variations of this plate... The Mach 1/Autolite/Superstang/Iron Horse chassis is mostly identical on the bottom to the third plate from the right (countdown coupe from mid seventies) with axle holes like the annual plate (no leafus interruptus) and body support posts molded on top side. Pics of that one are posted earlier in thread. Edited April 20, 2023 by mk11
