sflam123 Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 Great job!!! That one and the 1968 turbine car(s) are probably two of the most hated cars in Indianapolis 500 history, but from an engineering standpoint, they are amazing!! Yours looks fantastic. Is this the MPC kit or ???

Paint choice, references and extras you did. I have made two attempts at this kit and both are in the junkyard. I have two more kits and would like to do one at least as nice as yours.

Reading the parts in the book about Andy Granatelli's story about the turbine cars and the struggles he had with the Indy 500 hierarchy you just had to admire the man. Any how such a great build.

I read the same thing, Ray - a cheap part prevented Parnelli Jones from winning his second Indy 500. Todd, what about showing some more pics? I have not taken any with the body mounted because unfortunately it fits poorly I did some mods here and there to help it fit better but I was not satisfied with the results. Decals are from indycals as well as the wheels.

Nice job on this rare kit - and dont feel bad about the poor fit of the body - no one else got it To fit - i should know - i tried and failed when this kit first came out …

I have one but never dug into it that much. The suspension pieces were so flimsy that they probably would never have supported the weight of the body...which was one solid hunk of resin. But now that I am have more experience...hmmmmmm

I met Vince Granatelli about 15 years ago at Paxton Products in Camarillo CA, which the Granatelli's owned. At that time Paxton designed and built industrial centrifugal blowers, a spin off of the Granatelli's automotive empire. I worked as an engineer for a company that acquired Paxton's industrial blower segment then. He gave me one of these promotional photos. I see that Vince died a few weeks ago. RIP Vince.

You certainly don't have that now. A little known fact about the #40 turbine car was that it was SUPPOSED to be ready for and entered in the 1966 Indianapolis 500. It was a complete secret and had only been discussed with USAC in vague terms for its legality to the rules. Unfortunately, the frame was warped when it was improperly heat treated and the Granatelli's had to enter the Novi car in its's place. 1966 marked the last year of the Novi's at the Indianapolis 500. By the time the 1967 event came up, the car was no longer a secret although many of the details were still unknown.
