AMT 1929 Ford A Roadster "Mod Rod"
unclescott58 replied to Junkman's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Are there not two different '29 Model A roadster kits that have been put out by AMT over the years? I'd like to know more about the differences between those two. Besides a comparison to the Revell version. Does Tim or anybody else know the complete history of AMT's Model A roadsters? Im still wondering, in the past reissues, before 1973, the Mod Rod was shown using the Ala Kart fenders and running boards. The '73, 25th anniversary version the box art looks like it was using the regular fenders and running boards. Was the Ala Kart fenders and running boards still in that kit? Was one able to build the two A's both with fenders in that kit? And will one be able to build two fendered cars with the version they plan on releasing next? -
One of my pace changing things is building spaceship kits designed in, or of designs designed in the 50's and 60's, depicting a future that never came. At least not yet. I love the optimistic view, whether realistic or not, we had of the future back then. Gene Roddenberry, Irwin Allen, and Gerry Anderson are some of my heroes for making my childhood future so much fun and hopeful. And it's not just their's and other's fantasy stuff I love. I love the proposed spacecraft that never came true either. I've built models of Star Trek's Enterprise, the Forbidden Planet's C-57D Space Cruiser, 2001's Space Clipper, AMT's Lief Erickson, Space 1999's Eagle, Disney's Man in Space 3-stage rocket, and others. I'm working on MPC's Pilgrim Observer, and Disneyland's TWA Moonliner. Plus others. I've built two different versions of Irwin Allen's Seaview. And two different versions of the Flying Sub also. Plus Moebuis' Jonny Quest Dragonfly. All these have, and still do, take me on great fantasy trips around the universe in my imagination. It's a lot of fun. By the way, my "holy grail" in this genre is Revell's 1959 space station. The one shaped kind of like a coffee can. I hear it was a poor seller in it's day. So now it's become very rare and very desirable. And very expensive! I've written to Revell about it. To see if could ever be reissued. I was told the molds for that one are long gone.

I agree. At the same time, doesn't somebody offer this car in a 1/24th scale kit already? If not. I can't imagine how that one has gotten passed over all of these years. I remember a neighbor kid back in the early 60's having a plastic toy, complete with a opening door, of this car. Even then I knew of the real car. And have always thought it cool.

AMT 1929 Ford A Roadster "Mod Rod"
unclescott58 replied to Junkman's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Boy, the high school ad above is pretty neat. Nothing like that in my yearbooks. Back to the kit. I understand you can build two full cars from this kit. So I can build two full fender cars? The Mod Rod, and a stock roadster to display together? Everybody else is excited about the Ala Kart pieces. I could care less about that vehicle. I've always thought it looked too busy. I like the cleaner looking (IMO) Mod Rod much better. I really like the '32 grille shell with with vertical, stacked headlamps along side. An odd, but cool look. By the way, despite my lack of interest in the Ala Kart. The more of it restored, the better. The more options and original parts back the better. Now, I wish they'd restore and/or bring back the '32 Ford 2-door sedan that came with the '40 Willys. I don't need another '40 Willys, but I would really like that '32. -

Welcome back. It's good to hear from you again. -
How much did it cost?

I'm no Isetta expert by any means. But, that windshield just looks so wrong to me. It ruins the kit for that reason alone.

I'm not I a big Hurst/Olds fan. I'll wait to see if they do a "regular" Supreme (Calais) or 442 version in the future.

Another one I want for my collection. -
I don't think I was whining one bit. I think the kit is fine for what it is. I may not get it. But, I think it's going to be a big hit for Moebuis. Speaking of whining. If you think this is bad, go back and read the reviews on Revell's '70 'Cuda and '67 Camaro. (Both of which I like.) what your reading here is pretty mild.

Rattle Cans - who still uses them?
unclescott58 replied to tiking's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I mainly use Tamiya lacquer paints in spray cans. I love them. Testor's One Coat Lacqer works pretty good too. I hate the work and hassle of using an airbrush. And with the great paint jobs I get from lacquer paint in spray cans, I can see no good reason to switch to an airbrush. -
Molded in side markers?
unclescott58 replied to buildnething's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I just use Testor Stoplight Red and Turnsignal Yellow enamel paint. It works fine even without silver paint or bare metal foil behind it. -
I suspect this version is as "stock" of a Belvedere I as we'll see from Moebius. The small valve covers, the round air cleaner, and dog dishes tell me this car maybe built close to something one could find somewhat regularly on Plymouth's show floors at the time. I'm not keen on the exhaust setup for a regular showroom stock automobile. Or the bucket seats. But, both were available from the factory for the car. Again, for something I would have been interested for "regular" use, the Satellite more fits the bill for something I would have looked for in a real Plymouth Belvedere at my Plymouth dealer back in 1965. Other than the racing crowd, I don't think too many people were interested in a 2-door Belvedere Is with a 426 wedge and buckets. And doubt many modelers today plan on building this kit as a stock, showroom, non racing Belvedere either. But, the box art does depict a showroom stock Belvedere I. A family version, rather than a racing model. Why Moebius has chosen to depict the car this way on the front of their box, without the bench seat and regular exhaust in the box, I do not understand. This maybe one of their few mistakes.

They must com from near Iron Mountain, MI up in the U.P. Around here, we have tin worms. They not only eat sheet metal, but they would do a pretty good job on wood too back in the day.

Nice looking trailer. Hope to get one when they become available. -
I've heard of Iron Buterfly. But, never Iron Moth's.

Ya know, I have no interest in this kit. I like the Satellite better. And I'm not a big fan of it. But, the box art got me to buy it (that and Moebuis' reputation). The box shown above might get to buy the Belvedere I also. Maybe. Though I doubt it.
