More research. By the looks of it, the spare was on the right side. You can see the holes where the panel clipped in place as well as the reinforcement that the hardware would fasten to. If you look really close on the left side, you can the canister for venting the fuel tank. So was Monogram going to add a station wagon to the lineup and never went through with it? Yet the fuel tank on the chassis plate would be wrong for any wagon. All I know is that I won't lose any sleep over it. 😃 -

Thank you so much. I should have done another hour of searching before opening my mouth. Now I just need to know which side the spare tire was mounted, and why Monogram put that in their chassis plate. 😃 -

I would love to see a picture or article stating that. All the articles said it was never an option. Maybe GM shopped that out to another company for the conversion. It wouldn't be the first time that was done. -
I'm working on their 1960 Impala kit and noticed something. After research, I think they did this on purpose just to mess with us. On the bottom of the chassis it has a vertical mounted spare tire well on the right side of the car, with typical fuel tank location, yet all Chevrolet passenger cars had their spare tire in the trunk, mounted on top of the floor, as per the kit. Elcamino had their spare mounted behind the seat. All station wagons spare were carried under a trap door at the rear of the car, with a different shaped fuel tank. No third seat was offered in a Chevrolet wagon until 1961, with a vertical mounted spare on the right side of the car, and different fuel tank location. I could not find any model offered by Monogram of a 1961 Chevrolet wagon. BUT !!! You can buy, brand new, a 1959-60 replacement sheet metal spare tire well...except it is for the LEFT side of the car. After looking at lots of pictures of Impala, Bel Air, and Biscayne trunks, none of them have a vertical mounted spare tire...on either side. Like I said, I think someone did this to mess with our heads. 😁

I've always wanted to build this kit. I may toy with adding the roll cage and period correct nascar wheels and tires as well...if I can stuff them under without too much trouble. Hopefully I have a better model building track record in 2025 than this year. -
I'm sure this is a long shot. I'm not happy with my 59 Elcamino. I really need to repaint the hood and front valance, but ran out of the paint. It is a can of Duplicolor, same size as a can of Tamiya primer. It was sold in the mid 90's at Walmart. The current offering from Duplicolor is too dark and has larger flake. Hopefully one of you is like me and never throws away paint.

This is a cool idea. I may have to add another build to the bench.... -
Who doesn't love a mock-up? Let's see yours!
Sam I Am replied to Belairconvertable's topic in WIP: Model Cars
ADHD.....you start off wiring your distributer for your 59 Elcamino and while the paint dries you go hmmmm.... Lots of slicing and dicing yet to go. Mocked up on a stock chassis, so it's in the nosebleed section at the moment. .....oh, yeah.....the distributor..... -
Nice color combo.

I'd say don't sweat the details, but it's the little details that make it such a great build.

WIP: Custom AMT 1:25 1964/65 Chevy El Camino
Sam I Am replied to JNordgren42's topic in WIP: Model Cars
You are doing an amazing job with this. I have to chuckle a bit though. For many years the 64 was the less desirable of the two. Many people would put a 65 front clip on their 64 as well as switch out the interior so they could have the more desirable 65 look. In essence, a clone. You are doing the complete opposite. ? I am fortunate enough to have a 1964 Elcamino body and grill. I also have a 1965 donor. My build will more than likely have a '65 "upgraded" interior. ? -
