New Car Quiz from Americantorque
ChrisBcritter replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
98% - got one year wrong. Not an obvious one, but... still embarrassing. -
Good news - kinda - is that the rear glass for the chopped hardtop is still there on the tree; maybe some resin caster could tackle the missing tops, fins and skirts?

AMT Junior And Craftsman Kits
ChrisBcritter replied to regular guy's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The '64 Galaxie survives to this day as a Craftsman kit - how much do they retail for? -
AMT Surf Woody Has anyone built one?

Very obscure but very good: Jerry and the Diamonds, outta South Gate, CA with "Sea-N-Shore". The address on the label is now the parking lot of a Mexican restaurant. -
And Molotow makes a 4mm liquid masking pen for just such occasions. The Deerfield Hobby Lobby has a couple on the clearance rack for $4.10 each (originally $18.99 ).

He does have a following of several wealthy collectors who bid each other up. He just recently joined the forum; why not ask him? His '59 DeSoto wagon is a jewel, plus he scratchbuilt an excellent trailer for the Coronado boat kit that I'll be shamelessly copying studying very closely when I build one.

Labor of love
ChrisBcritter replied to Lovefordgalaxie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used to read a lot of English vintage car restoration magazines like Practical Classics, and it amazes me what so many restorers over there accomplish in the land where the even the rust has rust. Almost makes up for the banger racers... -
Teeny tiny fan belt for the '68 Ford SOHC engine. Thanks F-J! When I get this '58 Fairlane sort-of-street-freak-sort-of-gasser-complete-Frankenstein done I'm going to put up a thank-you list of forum members who helped with parts.

Divided by a common tongue
ChrisBcritter replied to DonW's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Are there many variations for car parts in Brazilian Portuguese as opposed to how they speak it in Portugal? Like in Spanish - I've noticed my friends from Mexico refer to station wagons as camionetas, but in Cuba they're called pisicorres. -
I do remember there were some Beavis/Butthead types in SoCal back in the day who got sick from ingesting Mr. Zogs Sex Wax ("The best for your stick"). It's surfboard wax. And I believe they did add a warning label.

Great idea! Surprised I haven't seen that done before.

1mm is great for emblems - you do need a light touch. One note: The tip on mine dried up after three days (No, I didn't leave the lid off); trimming the end slightly with a fresh X-acto blade got it going again. Now I'll remember to store it vertically, tip down.

Modelling Oddities/Mistakes
ChrisBcritter replied to NY Modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I also mentioned on the Modeling Quiz thread that AMT initially engraved the word "LeMans" upside down on the rear chrome panel of the '63 Tempest promo; it was corrected at some point. The AMT '61/'62 Buick Special wagon and the Jo-Han '61 Olds F-85 wagon have the same error: there should be two vertical moldings in the tailgate window to represent the center sliding glass (this was standard on the deluxe trim level the models depicted). MPC never offered correct wheelcovers in their '71-'73 Cougars; they used the '70 wheelcovers on all of them. -
Modelling Oddities/Mistakes
ChrisBcritter replied to NY Modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As an aside, has anyone ever seen one of those "special crayons" for "striping on 'chrome' trim detail"? A few old AMT boxes mention them. Was this an accessory AMT was going to produce but never did? -
...Aaaaand - the end. '56 Plymouth interior, '63 Impala taillights, and a few '61 T-bird bits. My best to Don and Carol, and fingers crossed for some angel to swoop down and take over the business.

Mecum Auctions
ChrisBcritter replied to Jon Haigwood's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Barrett-Jackson is coming up too - I went through the automobilia listings, apparently written by the same dingaling as always. I think he uses a dartboard to pick the adjectives. ("NOSY" is a new one this year - does it mean NOS-ey, like almost NOS? ) No vintage promos this time, unless you count the orange WenMac/AMF '65 Mustang. Worth maybe $150 on a good day - let's see what it does. I notice among the real cars, they're flogging the maybe-it-was-maybe-it-wasn't-JFK's ambulance again, and a customized '56 Chevy that they say has some kind of tenuous Barris connection, although the H.A.M.B. thread on it doesn't seem to bear that out. -
I believe this was when I was in fifth grade around 1970-71, when a classmate invited me to his birthday party. His father was a gearhead and I think had a hobby shop at some point; had a big 1/32 slot car track in the basement and a blue Chevy-powered '36 Ford 3-window in the garage. Afterwards, we boys all got party favors: AMT kits from the Flower Power and Baja series. He had a couple shelves full of them! Thus I got my first '62 Electra 225. One of the other kids later gave me his '59 Buick - no, I don't have either of them anymore... The family name was Petropolous (sp?), if that rings a bell with anyone from Northbrook or Prospect Heights.

Last Modelhaus Order
ChrisBcritter replied to unclescott58's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Just got an email early this morning saying my "seconds-into-May-16th" order has been shipped.
