  1. Great idea! Surprised I haven't seen that done before.
  2. 1mm is great for emblems - you do need a light touch. One note: The tip on mine dried up after three days (No, I didn't leave the lid off); trimming the end slightly with a fresh X-acto blade got it going again. Now I'll remember to store it vertically, tip down.
  3. I also mentioned on the Modeling Quiz thread that AMT initially engraved the word "LeMans" upside down on the rear chrome panel of the '63 Tempest promo; it was corrected at some point. The AMT '61/'62 Buick Special wagon and the Jo-Han '61 Olds F-85 wagon have the same error: there should be two vertical moldings in the tailgate window to represent the center sliding glass (this was standard on the deluxe trim level the models depicted). MPC never offered correct wheelcovers in their '71-'73 Cougars; they used the '70 wheelcovers on all of them.
  4. As an aside, has anyone ever seen one of those "special crayons" for "striping on 'chrome' trim detail"? A few old AMT boxes mention them. Was this an accessory AMT was going to produce but never did?
  5. ...Aaaaand - the end. '56 Plymouth interior, '63 Impala taillights, and a few '61 T-bird bits. My best to Don and Carol, and fingers crossed for some angel to swoop down and take over the business.
  6. Barrett-Jackson is coming up too - I went through the automobilia listings, apparently written by the same dingaling as always. I think he uses a dartboard to pick the adjectives. ("NOSY" is a new one this year - does it mean NOS-ey, like almost NOS? ) No vintage promos this time, unless you count the orange WenMac/AMF '65 Mustang. Worth maybe $150 on a good day - let's see what it does. I notice among the real cars, they're flogging the maybe-it-was-maybe-it-wasn't-JFK's ambulance again, and a customized '56 Chevy that they say has some kind of tenuous Barris connection, although the H.A.M.B. thread on it doesn't seem to bear that out.
  7. I believe this was when I was in fifth grade around 1970-71, when a classmate invited me to his birthday party. His father was a gearhead and I think had a hobby shop at some point; had a big 1/32 slot car track in the basement and a blue Chevy-powered '36 Ford 3-window in the garage. Afterwards, we boys all got party favors: AMT kits from the Flower Power and Baja series. He had a couple shelves full of them! Thus I got my first '62 Electra 225. One of the other kids later gave me his '59 Buick - no, I don't have either of them anymore... The family name was Petropolous (sp?), if that rings a bell with anyone from Northbrook or Prospect Heights.
  8. Just got an email early this morning saying my "seconds-into-May-16th" order has been shipped.
  9. The only Jo-Han '69 Road Runner kit I ever bought came from a Safeway grocery store on The Alameda in San Jose, CA.
  10. Continuing a proud tradition:
  11. And had to get a new exhaust system put in my Buick.
  12. Got NOS '62 Continental sedan glass to replace the stress-cracked unit in my '61, and a '62 Ford pickup steering wheel: With modifications, this should be a pretty close match for the '57 Lincoln wheel used in the Coronado boat. Now I just need an old Rambler V-8 to make into the Gray Marine 327 engine... oh yeah, need to get the boat kit too... Vince and Tom - Haven't decided what to trade the '30 A for yet.
  13. Thanks Tulio - these pictures are certainly worth a thousand words! Looking at these photos, I'm glad I sold off my IMC kit a long time ago. Even though the older kit was well-engineered for the time, Revell did quite well capturing the details on the new one (although I wonder if IMC did a better job with the rear bumper apron?). Looks like you could still get away with using the optional IMC parts on the Revell kit to make a '46. I bet you could work magic with the AMT 1/43 scale '48, too...
  14. Looks like the Scale Stars/All Stars 1/32 kits must be selling well if they have a third one out (Come on, Deuce and '40 Ford!). Are many buyers building slot cars from these nowadays?
  15. I've been having fun with mine - practicing on trim and emblems, plus they do a great job on worn Hot Wheels mags. Funny thing is the Hobby Lobby over here has a bunch of Molotow paint markers on clearance - but no chrome ones, of course.
  16. Picked up a can of Tamiya blue to repaint the SOHC for the '58 Ford, after my attempt to airbrush it with Testors acrylic flopped (when I removed the masking tape the paint peeled off with it, and coverage wasn't great in the first place). Also picked up the Revell '30 Ford coupe kit from HL in Deerfield for trading material; I did give everyone a heads-up a week ago but no takers, so... They still have two '29s.
  17. Here's one of the early Ford jeeps; note the different front fender and doorway opening: It also had the Ford script stamped in the rear panel; only one l've ever seen. Taken in Wisconsin in 1970; yes, that's me looking like a doofus at the wheel with my brother.
  18. Good to know - what brand of reducer, and what ratio is working for you? Very tough-looking color scheme!
  19. Well, that's a shame. I guess we won't be seeing an accurate stock version after all. Saves me some bucks, at least, but I really wanted to use that chassis for some other builds. I like what you're doing with it, Mitch! What kit did you use the shock towers from?
  20. Looks like it came straight from the Preservation class at Pebble Beach - well done!
  21. Just got my Molotow Liquid Chrome pen... time for some experimenting. * * * * OK - just hit the trunk trim on a Motorific '63 Chevy body and I'm VERY impressed! I'm going to be chroming a LOT of small items with this pen.
  22. Fingers still crossed for you, Harry. Would you be a candidate for a heart transplant?
  23. Wonderful job, Steve - these Jo-Hans have so much potential, and you brought it all out!
  24. Shouldn't 1965 Idaho be green, not black?
  25. Standard (non-Cyclone) grille and wheelcovers for the new '65 Comet. (ETA: And standard front shock towers. And stock height front suspension...) Accurate '46 Chevy grille for the Galaxie kits. '62 and/or '63 Ranchero conversion (does someone already make this?). '59 Chrysler 300 conversion. And finally, a sure bet for some smart caster: Completely corrected '58 Plymouth body.
