This post reminds us what we had to work with before the new Revell kit was released this year. ?

Boss 351 Hood Painting
vamach1 replied to Perspect Scale Modelworks's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Somehow I have in my decal spares seven silver and four black hood full decals from the old MPC kit and Fred Cady sheets. I’ve never tried to used them as I assume it would not lay flat no matter how much decal set was used. -
Boss 351 Hood Painting
vamach1 replied to Perspect Scale Modelworks's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I decided to paint the hood and cut out the outer part of the decal and very carefully position it as straight as I could. I knew if I used the whole decal it would be difficult to get it to “match” the paint color and the overlap would be visible. -
I saw your build on Facebook but the close up pictures show what an amazing build this is. I did not realize you reshaped the Boss valve cover into the stock 351C ones and of course you did a fantastic job.

I started on this a few months ago and finally finished it last night. It is “out of the box” with just some extra painting. I have seen some amazing build already and other threads have covered just about every pro and con (very few) of the kit. I did have to use superglue and epoxy and a rubber band to make sure the chassis and front valence would stay glued to the body. The next one I build I will test fit more to see if there are creative ways to make the final assembly easier. As others have mentioned the decals are very thin but thankfully there was an extra BOSS 351 decal for the front fender that can in handy. I ended up painting the hood versus using the while decal and just used the thin outline stripe - same for the line just above the black that I painted along the bottom of the car. This kit deserves the skill rating as I think back to the AMT and MPC 71-73 kits and how simplistic they are in comparison. Since the kit has two full sets of the body decals (silver and black) if you buy two kits you essentially get two sets of decals in case there’s a mishap. I cannot wait to see the 007 Mach1 version in person and I’m sure some others will get one built before I do. My final thought are take your time and enjoy this kit - it was won’t the wait. PS - don’t tell anyone the color is a GM Duplicolor spray can I had in my stash but it seemed like a perfect match for Medium Bright Yellow. ?

Bargain price when they were new and comparable to many supercars.- 1 reply

Nothing that I have seen yet but with #D printing hopefully someone will do a complete body and the wheels. Ditto for the 03/04 Cobras and Saleens.

Excellent build and that color really pops.

I may have responded before>. I took the flight on Nine-O-Nine about ten years ago. I have a bunch of pictures and videos of the flight on my old PC but found this one on my IPAD that I took at the airport in Maryland. RIP to the the souls that were lost in the accident in 2019.

The Newly Tooled Revell 1971 Boss 351 Mustang
vamach1 replied to baycolony's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Looking fantastic. I have the fold down seat option in my 72 Mach1. Here’s some pictures of the rear seat of another sportsroof I found online that shows the fold down seat area with the chrome latch parts. -
Excellent work and certainly a one-of-one with the color change.

Just saw this auction end. I thought when it was around $90 that was crazy but the final bid was mind blowing given the poor condition of the built up. Not sure if anyone cared if it was an original owner model. ?

Yes I forgot about that too.

The trickiest part is getting the trunk size and shape correct on the convertible and of course the flatter profile from the doors back, making a boot and/or top and revising the rear seat area. Revell did this with the 69 Shelby GT500 fastback mold so it’s possible but I would not hold my breath on a 71-73 convertible version anytime soon. I hope I’m wrong. I would not lose any sleep if either the AMT or MPC was forever converted to a convertible as long as they at least fixed the MPC hood and included options to build a 72 or 73 with the different grilles and bumpers but that’s a complete fantasy.

Finally got some paint on the body. Next step to mask off most of the body to paint the black and the hood.

Spot on as always Tim. If the 69/70 Revell molds were still around I’m sure they would sell some “new” based on the nostalgia factor and that unlike kits that have been reissued a dozen times and must still sell or else they would end up in the clearance aisle we have not seen these on the Five and Dime stores in over 50 years. I was lucky enough to buy two “builder” ones at swap meets but personally I would not pay the current collector prices because as you said the kits are typical of the era and expecting a dead on accurate kit mass procured that sold for $2 at the time was unrealistic. However, IF they were ever revived I would pick up one of each just to see how it could be improved with some engine compartment and chassis upgrades. Of course if all new tooling were made or even a modified reworking of the Boss 302/Mach1 molds I would be first in line to buy a convertible version as long it was not molded in the retro green plastic. ? Can’t wait to see what Revell has up their sleves.

Ford J Car...

Very nice. Years ago I built a 1/43 resin J car and also the MPC clear body one. -
The Newly Tooled Revell 1971 Boss 351 Mustang

I found a few pictures up the underside of a 8 time MCA gold winning Boss 351. Pretty to look at but a shame it will probably not see any miles on the road. -
