MCM Forum FAQ- I think One is Needed
mikemodeler replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As the comedian Ron White would say......."You can't fix stupid" Considering many of us find it easier to post a question instead of searching for the answer or similar topics, I would not hold out much hope that the FAQ section would be used. Don't get me wrong, I think Casey is on to something, but I doubt it would change much here, unfortunately. -
Question for Gregg or Harry...
mikemodeler replied to Ramfins59's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Unlike Scale Auto, MCM does their contest coverage issue as part of their regular releases, as the February/March issue. There are pros and cons to it but no matter when it comes out someone could question why a particular contest isn't in the mag. The folks at SA bring their contest issue out in the Fall before the Atlanta NNL so their coverage is always a year behind, much like MCM will be with the NNL East. There should be some folks who attend the NNL East and post pictures here to tide you over until the magazines get them in print. The nice thing is that most attendees seem to take hundreds of pictures, sometimes multiple angles of a build, and the mag can only print a fraction of that total. -
Alan's products are on par with several other top notch casters- Modelhaus, Replicas & Miniatures to name a few- and well worth the wait. Waiting is part of the process with most resin casters and I think it has been well documented that Alan does the casting as a side business as time allows. Oh, it is his birthday today, so Alan, if you are reading this, HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!! :P

I owe an apology
mikemodeler replied to VW Dave's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When you are married over 20 years, you don't have to admit it anymore, just assume you are until she tells you otherwise! Way to take responsibility Dave, wish more people did that these days! -
where to buy flocking
mikemodeler replied to SFC_Allen's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was in Michael's on Sunday and they had this on clearance for $1.79! I bought two bottles of the black and figure I have plenty of flocking for awhile now! I found it in the scrapbooking section right near all of the glitter and stamps. -
Way OT. Need recommendations for professional resume writers
mikemodeler replied to Monty's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Dave touched on a very important area that has worked for many that I know of- Networking. If you are in an industry and have skills and contacts, use them to your advantage. The last three jobs over the past 12 years I have had came about as a result of networking and not my resume. Charlie also mentioned Linkedin, and I would suggest you join today. I have had 3 recruiters contact me in the last 12 months for jobs they were trying to fill and they saw my experience and past employers. None of the jobs interested me as they were not in a area that I would consider but people are using different techniques these days to hire so you must adapt. Check with your local college or county offices as some of them have job training classes that will help you with resume writing, job interviewing, and other skills that can help you get hired. Best of luck, it is a tough situation out there but people are getting hired and those that are have had to work for it, as I am sure you are! -
x2 !!!!!!! The list of scheduled releases for March/April so far doesn't contain any "must haves" for me, so I will continue to build what I have stockpiled.

Kenny-whopper Wrecker build
mikemodeler replied to a topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Probably not gonna happen as the topic starter and builder have been banned here. Check other forums, you might find it there. -
Easier to drive that Mustang when the roads are dry and clear, huh Harry? We are getting a little snow and rain mix tonight here in Charlotte but it will be 60 degrees by Tuesday. I had to mow the lawn yesterday, something I never had to do in February when I lived in Illinois!

was at michaels store today
mikemodeler replied to route66modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My daughter wanted to get some cake decorating stuff from Michael's today so we went. She took the 50% off coupon from the paper and used on some of her things. I found some flocking powder in the scrapbooking aisle on clearance for $1.79 and picked up two containers and figure I have enough to last me a few years! I went through the model section looking at their selection and it was in bad shape. Not much to choose from and overpriced! The last model I bought at Michael's was one of the Revell Camaro's that was a part of their Saturday Build-It deal and I got it for $5. -
VERY bad week continues....
mikemodeler replied to FASTBACK340's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
John, please accept my condolences for your losses- family and friends. I have lost some family and friends too as of late and it is hard to understand some times. I just wish some of the accolades being paid to the likes of Whitney Houston could be used on people who gave their lives to our freedom and safety. Sure, it is sad that Whitney's daughter will not have her Mom around, but considering the example she was, that might not be a bad thing afterall, just my opinion. -

Is that another Dr. Cranky/Chuck Most collaboration? -

mikemodeler replied to FASTBACK340's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree with you 100% Jim. While I hated to hear about Gary Carter passing away, it wasn't a total shock to hear about Whitney as she was on a path of self-destruction for some time now. What is troubling for me is that the deaths of our service men and women tend to go unnoticed unless there is a sensational aspect to their demise. What passes for news these days makes me wonder why I bother watching TV much anymore! -
Ford truck
mikemodeler replied to gray07's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That sure is shiny! Nice job on that Ford, great details and clean paint job! -
Not having the whole story, I agree that at the very least I would file a police report. If you have renter's insurance, you may be able to file a claim, provided you can show what was taken. If there was no coverage for the kits, then you probably are out of luck. If in fact it was the property manager who removed the kits, maybe the police checking around and doing some investigating will prompt him to 'fess up or return the kits if they haven't been disposed of. Either way, a police report may bring some comfort to you if it gets the property manager to change his ways. I know you have had a rough time of it Rick and life seems to kick us when we are down, but don't let this keep you from building models. If you can keep us updated how this turns out, I am sure the forum will help you get back to the hobby when you are ready.

My thoughts and prayers to you Darin in this trying time. Take solace in knowing that she is in a better place and no longer suffering and that you two will meet again. You have exhibited such strength during what had to be a difficult time and the beautiful words you wrote in the OP show us all how we should view and treasure our spouse as tomorrow is truly a gift. Should you need our help, know that your "forum family" is here for you. Take care and God Bless

Is the AMT 1970 1/2 Camaro any good?
mikemodeler replied to '08SEAL's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
In a word John- quality. The older AMT "red" AMT kit suffered from body warp issues that make assembly really difficult but the later ones Casey showed are much better, even though they come from the same manufacturer. -
My first reaction to the topic was Huh?????? But I have to admit that you have pulled this one off quite well and it is looking like something the factory may have done back in the day!

Issue #165 arrived..

That is not fair Chuck, I have yet to receive my copy! My mailman has to read it first and pass it around the post office before it ends up in my mailbox! -

Actually Donn, John Hiatt wrote and sang a tune about bald heads called "solar sex panels" and that is what I call mine! HA HA HA HA -
Wayne, As Harry said, "affordable" means different things to different people. Building your own spray booth to save a few dollars is admirable but only if you do it correctly. There have been many posts here about how members have built there own as well as members who have purchased ready built ones. Whichever route you choose to go, make sure it is vented outside properly and you are wearing a respirator when painting as the fumes are pretty nasty, booth or no booth. I am saving my lunch money to buy a Pace booth, it just looks a whole lot better than what I could create.

Yost Airbrush Video
mikemodeler replied to Models by Bear's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Donn, a friend of mine who paints cars for a living likes to say his gray hair is overspray from primering cars or painting them silver! Me, I wish I had hair to get overspray on! -
One important item left off Harry's list is a good respirator for the fumes and dust created when painting, sanding and carving up these models. I would also add some decent modelling putty if you are making any modifications to bodies. Many here have their preferences, I like to use Tamiya putty myself. Welcome back and be sure to pick up Donn's videos, money well spent and a great reference tool. You can order them at www.oldmansmodels.com
