Hey Gregg
mikemodeler replied to Nick Notarangelo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Check out the Modelroundup's new page and you will see that Round2 has 4 slot car bodies coming out in the next month or two. It makes me want to buy and build a slot car track to relive my younger days of racing at the LHS and building cars like Jairus mentioned. I am afraid that if I take the plunge back into slot car racing my model building days will be over as I won't want to build, just race! -
'79 Ford F-350 improvements
mikemodeler replied to 62rebel's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Check with any of the online kit sellers like The Modelroundup, Dean's Hobby Shop, Fred Sterns. Be prepared to pay as this kit was a re-issue a few years ago and goes for $20-40. You might be able to find one on eBay. The Model King kit has the parts to build this as a 2WD as well as a 4WD. -
Al's stuff is top notch and well worth the wait and cost. I placed an order and it took about 2 months to get my stuff, which was a little longer than Al estimated but the product is very nice! I did place a big order and Al casts product as it is ordered so I knew I had to wait and he wants it to be right before he ships so I appreciate that aspect of his business. As was mentioned, he travels and resin casting is a sideline for him so please be patient when you do order. I have not heard any bad stories about Al and i would just warn you that it may take a few tries to get through to him but you will love the product!

Wanted, info about truck frame
mikemodeler replied to gray07's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Looks like a Ford Chassis, I would have to check my workbench to be sure. The exhaust has me wondering. -
'69 Chevrolet Nova F/Stock *Finished*
mikemodeler replied to W-409's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I think the question is "why aren't sub-frame connectors being shown?" . To explain what that means is the Nova is built as a unibody frame vehicle or simply that it does not have a full frame chassis like a full size car (Impala) from the same era. A common thing to do when building a Nova (or Camaro) from these years was to add sub-frame connectors to strengthen the chassis for drag racing. By using the sub-frame connectors, a racer would essentially have a stronger frame that could withstand the abuse of hard launches during a race without having to build a full tube frame like a modern pro stock race car. -
Any football fans out there?
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry, Aaron Rodgers did not drop those 6 or 7 passes...he didn't fumble the ball 4 times and he doesn't play defense either. I am not a Packer fan but that whole team played badly for 60 minutes, that is how you lose a game. He will get asked about the loss and will take some of the blame but it doesn't all fall on him. They were playing with heavy hearts after their offensive coordinator's son died tragically earlier in the week and they had coasted since Christmas. The team that won today was the one that showed up and had something to prove. -
50 chevy shop truck
mikemodeler replied to Nick Winter's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Cool Nick, I will be watching this one. Your skills have come a long way and I am sure you will do this one justice! You gonna keep it yellow or change the color? -
Painting in the snow
mikemodeler replied to Rob McKee's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
G, 1 inch of rain= 10 inches of snow. Think of that lake having a lot of melted snow in it! Lived in Northern Illinois for 41 years, got tired of snow and cold, moved to Charlotte 7 years ago, now I use my snow shovel to scoop up leaves in the fall ! back on topic- I remember having this problem when I lived up north and short of a heated garage, the advice the guys have given about keeping everything warm is the best way to get a decent shine. I would let it gas out and dry and then polish it out to see if the blushing disappears. -

mikemodeler replied to Nick Winter's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
I am liking the 3 window cab Nick, did you have to re-do it after the yellow paint was shot? Looks like some final bodywork is needed where you filled in the windows. The rally wheels and small block power should make this a nice little truck! -
Cooters Tow Truck ?
mikemodeler replied to 57peppershaker's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
The wrecker parts from the Midnite Cowboy and a '72 Chevy pickup kit would get you close. The kit they put out back in the day was a re-pop of an old kit,IIRC. There might be a bit of scratchbuilding and Evergreen sheets needed to make it all happen. -
that is cool Aaron, never knew that about the Gremlins being rescue vehicles. That lightbar is wider than the car! LOL!

doing trades with MCM members
mikemodeler replied to route66modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The few trades I have done over the years have usually been small stuff with the occasional kit here and there. I don't always have the time to package something up and run to the PO to get it off so I tend to not trade nearly as much as I would like. That being said, I am reminded of an old saying about loaning money- never give anymore than you can afford to lose. I have loaned money to family members before only to get "You mean you were serious about paying you back???" comments. I have had the same hold true for trading things "You really expect me to pack up and ship those wheels? C'mon, it will cost more to do that than it is worth!" George's comments about offering to pay some/all of the shipping charges should be understood by all traders. If I am sending you a kit and have to pay the PO $5-10 and you are sending me some wheels that cost $2 to ship, a couple of $$ will go a long way towards another trade. I am not yet retired like George but considering how few raises I have had in the last 5 years, I feel like I am on a fixed income! -
Dave, I grew up just across the Wisconsin border in Northern Illinois from the AMC factory in Kenosha WI. The folks there supported the factory and at one time there were probably more AMC vehicles registered in Kenosha county than any other county in the US! While the cars were not stylish compared to the Big 3, they had unique features. I go back to the area during the summer to visit family and if there is a cruise night in Kenosha, you can bet there will be some nice AMC cars there!

LOOKING FOR A RESIN CASTER
mikemodeler replied to OLESHEP63's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You may want to edit your post to remove your phone number and request people to send you a PM. Also, it would help if you posted your name (it is in the rules) so we could address you by name. Depending on what you want to have casted, resin casters may or may not be willing to do it because of the cost involved. The molds and resin for a body could get expensive for just 1 or 2 copies. Best of luck! -
Is this for real?
mikemodeler replied to JesseJames's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I saw an episode of "My Classic Car" on Speed recently where they were visiting Jay Leno's garage and they had some type of RP technology that they used to create replacement parts for some of the cars they were working on. Considering Jay's taste in cars, I can imagine that this technology is extremely helpful and a tremendous cost savings for the guys in the shop. If the kit manufacturers can use this technology to get kits to market faster and cheaper, then I am excited for what the future holds! -
Buy Donn Yost's DVD and most of your questions will be answered! It is a great way to learn some easy techniques on how to use your airbrush, how to thin paint, and some great tips on keeping your brush operating properly. www.oldmansmodels.com will get you to his website. The $20 for the DVD is money well spent as Donn explains it very well and he is a modeler like us. There was a post here back in November/December that went into detail about the DVD.

Resin Casters, refused to buy parts?
mikemodeler replied to mannyclub's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That is how I have always thought it should be- make copies for personal USE, not GAIN! -
Resin Casters, refused to buy parts?
mikemodeler replied to mannyclub's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the issue becomes protecting your work when it is sold and copied. The car manufacturers extract a nice royalty from the kit manufacturers when they sell kits, to protect themselves. It has transcended to all levels of kits- Revell must get approval and pay royalities to Goodyear if they want to include tires with the Goodyear name on them. I don't think the top resin casters are copying other resin casters, it probably is more of someone selling a few copies to pay for their resin supplies. If you want to hear problems with people copying your work (stealing is the word that comes to mind) ask Donn Yost how many DVDs he has sold versus how many are probably in circulation! He was just trying to cover his cost of producing the DVD and make a buck or two, not retire to the Bahamas and yet on an earlier topic here members were bragging about how they made copies of Donn's DVD for friends! That is blatant stealing! -
Resin Casters, refused to buy parts?
mikemodeler replied to mannyclub's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Patrick, unfortunately a business can refuse to sell you something if they want. There are many reasons why a business may refuse and in Craig's case, it is a fear of copying and reselling that item, despite his refusal to do so. There are ways around that but then that is being sneaky and I haven't found Craig to be that way. -
Is this for real?
mikemodeler replied to JesseJames's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Just think how much easier this technology will make it for us when we go to swap meets to sell our unwanted kits! No more lugging boxes and boxes of kits, instead just a bunch of DVDs and that will be it! Seriously, I think this is good news because the money previously spent on tooling by the model companies can be directed towards new subjects. Imagine the possibilities like a new Ford Super Duty for example. With this technology you might be able to select cab configuration, bed type, wheels and tires, etc.! I could build a standard cab 2wd dump truck and Harry could build a 4wd crew cab dually pickup. I could even see a point where if the "printer" was still pricy and out of reach for most modelers, a hobby shop could have one and you stop in and they create the kit you want while you shop! This could serve as a whole new revival of the hobby because it involves computers and technology that the younger generation are drawn to and it might allow for kits to be created that would otherwise never see the light of day. I am anxious to know what is Revell's and other model manufacturers take on this technology is. Do they view it as the future of their business or the end of it? It could make for a great magazine article Harry! -
