Ollie's Bargain Outlet deals
mikemodeler replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yep, scooped up a few of those Crown Vic police cars and F-150 pickups a few months ago, not sure if I can justify buying more, expecially after seeing those new releases coming from Revell! -
New Releases from Revell
mikemodeler replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Better start saving my lunch money now! I see many "must haves" and several that will be multiple purchases. This is shaping up to be a good start for 2012! -
Looking good so far Andy, get it done so we can all see it!

And We've lost another one now
mikemodeler replied to Joe Handley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Steve- you are correct but when you factor in the celebrity of a racecar driver versus the everyday working man or enlisted soldier, it is easy to see why there is such a disparity. I grew up watching the Vietnam war on the 6 o'clock news (no cable back then!) and the images of flag draped caskets being unloaded with our soldiers is just as vivid in my mind today as it was 40+ years ago. For whatever reason, we don't see that today and I think it has changed people's views of the human cost of war. Every loss of life is tragic, the sad reality is that some get more publicity than others. A soldier killed defending freedom, a firefighter trapped in a burning building, a construction worker falling to his death or one of the many other everyday workplace deaths is no different that Dan Wheldon's, it's just that his was viewed by many on TV and therefore became "news" on the news channels as well as the sports networks. -
waiting on my replacement copy and as soon as it arrives, I will be sure to check it out! Pass along some congrats from me.

Gotta get this off my chest
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry, it takes a big man to realize his missteps and for that I will say thank you. As you mentioned, you were stating your opinion and some of us, myself included, took you to task over that. The fact that we both have our views, can state them here, and still get along says alot about how this forum is run and the type of people here. You are correct in that being a moderator and having an opinion is not easy but I will say to date, you have done a great job of keeping them separate outside of the previously mentioned post. -
And We've lost another one now
mikemodeler replied to Joe Handley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree Skip, there is much that these sports heroes do without recognition because they feel a need to give something back. Dan Wheldon once donated his race winnings from a race at Iowa Speedway to local victims of a tornado. Many times those things go without notice as most of these guys don't do it for the press, they do it out of the kindness of their hearts. Much was written and spoken about the late Dale Earnhardt after his death 10 years ago about the charitable acts he did over the years, my favorite one being how he helped a church pave its parking lot. He wrote a check to complete the job with one condition- that no one be told he was the benefactor. He didn't want the attention, partly some believe because he could be viewed as being "soft" and that would go against his "Intimidator" image! In this age of "share the wealth" I don't think many people are aware of how much the racing world does just that for others. -

What's Your Achilles Heel?
mikemodeler replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
All of mine have already been mentioned here: Motivation Patience Painting Decals BMF Finishing Detailing Finding the time I aim for perfection and allow myself to get bogged down in the details which usually means very few models done in a years time. I can knock out a snap fast model because there is very little detailing involved versus a glue kit. Glad to know I am not alone in my suffering! -
You forgot the ugly part George!

add me to that list.

That is how it is spelled in Canada Dave! Next time consult your USA to Canadian spell check! Nice model there Nick, your skills have come a long way recently!

Much like a fireman or policeman, a racecar driver chooses his profession and understands the risks involved. In most cases it is through no fault of their own that they die doing their job. Getting behind the wheel of an Indycar or a passenger car, the driver understands that they have a responsibility to drive in a safe manner or else risk their life. As I said, I have sympathy for the two young children (2 years old and a 7 month old) that have lost their father and the wife who lost her husband.
-
Using your theory Harry, did the 343 Firefighters that died on 9/11 not deserve our sympathy? What about their families and friends? What if you were killed driving home in your Mustang on 294 and you were speeding? Would that not be a tragedy to your family? Yes, Dan Wheldon died in a very dangerous sport and knew the risks but like most race car drivers probably thought it wouldn't happen to him. My sympathies go out to his friends and family, especially his two young children who have been cheated by his death.

Custom Chevelle Finished Moved to under glass
mikemodeler replied to customsrus's topic in WIP: Model Cars
That is one sweet looking ride and should be even better when you do your version of a full detail! It will be interesting to see how much better the upcoming Revell kit is versus the AMT kit of the "new Camaro" that came out a few years ago. -
Like Jim, I USED to live in Illinois, having grown up in Waukegan. I was living in Winthrop Harbor up until June of 2005 when an employment opportunity was offered to me to move to Charlotte, NC. I had to decide between shoveling snow or sweating a little more during the summer and found that Old Spice deodorant is cheaper than a trip to the chiropractor! The happiest day in my life was selling that 8HP, dual stage, 30" wide snowblower and giving my winter coats to Goodwill! I will admit that it was a lot of fun visiting many of the LHS and shows that were in the area but considering we have seen a total of maybe 10 inches of snow over the last 6 winters compared to probably 300+ inches in Northern Illinois over that same time frame, I am glad I moved! Add in the drama with the last Governor and how broke the state is, and I do feel bad for those of you still there.

Anyone near Perry's resins?

Nick Winter is the forum member who has the personal relationship with Randy. Nick lives close to hobby shop that Randy owns and sees him there. There have been a few stories posted here about long lead times from Randy, which most have been attributed to his running the hobby shop and casting resin. Best of luck in your quest!
