'78 Olds Cutlass Supreme
mikemodeler replied to Chuck Most's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
That body style ('81 & up)changed enough to not be of use. You have some work ahead of you if you go with the '78 Monte Carlo that was issued a while back. The tail lights and grille are much differently shaped on the M/C than the Gutless. Best of luck with it Chuck, I am sure you could pull it off if you take your time. -
1964 Chevy 4X4 pickup
mikemodeler replied to jeffs396's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
A friend had an old '66 K20 with the 292 L6 and while he never would win a drag race, it had tons of torque and would pull ANYTHING ! He used it to plow snow in the winter and pull a twin axle construction trailer in the summer with no problem. I like the idea of the modern drivetrain but that L6 could be cool too! That truck is looking way cool and I like the olive drab color. Not sure if the white stars on the doors would enhance or detract from its appeal to me but it might seem appropriate considering the color. Maybe the .50 cal gun from the Hogans Heroes Jeep mounted on the back? -
Okay, it's late and I have had a long day but someone posts pix of a real car and wants me to believe it is a model???? WOW ! That is one nice build there and you had me thinking it was a real car. Nice details and beautiful paint and foil work. I can only hope to build as nice someday!

This is a Kia?
mikemodeler replied to MrObsessive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As someone who has been in the import auto parts business for more than 15 years now, I have seen a tremendous jump in quality of the Korean cars. Their build quality and durability is right there with the best of them and it is interesting to see how well their sales have taken off. In my extended family alone, we have purchased 3 Hyundais in the last 2 years and everyone has been quite happy with their purchases. Oil changes have been the extent of their service needs and no nagging warranty issues for any of us. Keep an eye on Hyundai and Kia, they are building market share and offering some innovative new vehicles that appeal to a variety of ages, something a car company has to do to survive. -
Modeling Funk
mikemodeler replied to Nick Notarangelo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I haven't sat at the bench in over 2 months, life has gotten in the way. I go through stages where I spend 6 nights a week building and then 6 months away! My trouble is that I have modeling ADD. I get about 2/3 the way done and then I move on to something else. I have about 6 - 8 kits at any given time in various stages of completion so I ALWAYS have something to work on. Like previously mentioned, I will grab a snap kit if I need some instant gratification. Nothing like one of those Revell 69 Camaros to break up the funk. Hang in there, use this time away from the bench to clear your head and rejuvenate yourself and come back with a vengance! -
Try Mitchell Field in Milwaukee, you will be surprised at how much easier it is to fly out of there. I have also found that certain times of the day are worse than others. Early morning is much better as it tends to have business travellers and fresh TSA agents while mid-day has more casual travellers and the TSA agents tend to be slower and ready for their next break. Don't get me wrong, I don't fly as much as I used to and when I do, I avoid airports like Chicago and Atlanta, simply because of past experiences and frustrations. You might also want to check to see if you are on any lists Harry, maybe the problem is you !

Where were you, or have you forgotten?
mikemodeler replied to highway's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was on my way to see a customer that morning and heard on the radio that "we have a report of a plane crashing into a building in NY City". Wow, I thought, must be a small one, never figuring it was a 757 hitting WTC. Got to my customer's NAPA store and he ushered me into the office to watch it on TV and we were both in shock over the scenes on TV. Watched for a while and then we went out to see some of his shop customers and everyone of them had thier eyes glued to the TV. As we went to the first couple of shops, it was apparent that we weren't there to sell them, it was to discuss the events as they happened. I remember a strong sense of anger that day towards our enemy and the pain they inflicted upon us. I got home early afternoon to my wife and then 4 year old daughter. My wife and I watched the new and shed a few tears, knowing that innocent people died that day doing what most of do- showing up to work. It hit my wife hard as her father is a retired firefighter and how many of them died trying to save others at the towers. I thought of my cousins in New York, both of whom had worked at WTC but had changed jobs the month before and no longer worked there. I thought of how I had been in NY less than a month prior and seeing the twin towers in the skyline and how it must have felt to witness the attacks. Around 3 that afternoon, my son who was 8, got off the bus and we hugged him and went in the house. We asked if the school had mentioned the attacks and he said no. We went on to explain what happened and tried to paint a picture of what he would probably see on the TV in the coming days. It was alot for him to take in but he understood. We went out side and hung our American flag, something we have done everyday since. In the days afterwards, it was a different world. People were more friendly, less impatient with one another, and seemed to genuinely care about one another. I remember looking up in the sky and wondering why it was so quiet, air traffic was so common where we lived, and then remembering that air travel had changed forever on 9/11. I wish I could understand why the hatred towards America had to result in the deaths of innocent people that day but after 10 years, I cannot. If anything, I think the events of that day caused more harm to racism and bias towards people of the Muslim faith, right or wrong. I do not hold a faith or race responsible because like so many times before in history, it is a few radicals that holdup their faith or race in their justifying of their actions. I remember talking with my Uncle in weeks after 9/11 that lived in suburbs of NYC in New Jersey. What hit home to me were his comments about how he was able to overcome several serious illnesses and 2 fights with cancer and yet some of his young neighbors did not come home from work that day and how life didn't seem fair. He said it was difficult to take his evening walk that day and in the days afterward, knowing full well that there were many families suffering a loss of a family member. It reminded him of his own grief over the loss of his son in 1968 and how terrible it felt then and how he could relate to his neighbors. Today I got to see my 18 year old son be a part of his high school JROTC color guard honoring Patriot Day and some retired veterans and first responders at a nursing home. He will be joining the Marine Corp next year and while we have the fears most parents do, we understand that he has wanted to do this for quite some time and while he won't say it, I think 9/11 had something to do with it. He has a strong sense of patriotism and duty and we are very proud of him as a result. May we never forget, may we never again experience the events of 9/11 and may we find some peace with those who are compelled to cause us harm. -
Harry, the problem is that you would be flying out of Chicago, one of the worse places to fly from! If the weather doesn't get you, the airlines will! I used to live there and dreaded flying from those airports and luckily I lived closer to Milwaukee and flying there was a breeze. The hassle of the TSA isn't that bad if you are prepared. What kills me is the folks that are casual fliers and get the lines backed up because they do not pay attention to the signs and instructions. A lot of airports are going to different lines for TSA depending on your experience and group that you are in. For instance, I always go thru the business/experienced traveller line because I am. The people in that line know enough to take off their belt, shoes, wallet, empty their pockets and get their laptop and toiletry bag in separate totes. Not that hard of a concept for someone who flies frequently but someone like my parents who fly every couple of years and are elderly, they see it as an infringement on their civil liberties. Not to start a war over rights, remember that flying is like driving- a privledge and if we are asked to show proper ID and ensure that we are not carrying weapons or hazardous materials, then do it without complaint.

Take care and be safe. I have been in Northern VA all week and I have seen and heard about the flooding but PA and NY seems to be getting the worst of it. Sure hope your home doesn't get as damaged as is predicted, that is no fun having to deal with. You and the others in that area are in my prayers.

FULL BUILD REVIEW: 1/12 Revell Shelby Mustang GT500
mikemodeler replied to David Thibodeau's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
This is looking very nice Dave and I might be tempted to buy one, although given my tendency to not finish, I probably will buy the smaller scale version. It looks like this goes together well and is fairly well detailed, despite some of the simple approach taken by Revell. I did notice on the Modelroundup site tonight that they show this kit as "just arrived" and they are selling it for $55.90. It will be interesting to see how long before the aftermarket has parts and detail items available for this kit. As has been discussed, there will be a demand for improving some of the perceived shortcomings and omissions. -

mikemodeler replied to Cool Hand's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
It takes a brave man to paint a model in black as it will show any imperfections and you sir are a brave man! Nice job and that paint is outstanding. -
Not sure that I have seen those around in resin but I would think you could cast them yourself rather easily. You could cast a bunch of them quickly and cheaply.
-
No fair posting 1:1 pictures and passing them off as models! That came out very nice and the details are outstanding. Keep em coming!

This would be a great one to have in resin and I hope you are able to bring it to market! Next up would be the pickup version of this body style. I saw an old IH pickup from this year range the other day in SC that was sitting along side an old gas station and I can only imagine the tales it holds! -
Congrats on hitting the 8,000 mark and let's hope that translates into more input from knowledgeable sources. As for how many of the 8,000 are "active", I would say it is like most businesses where the 80/20 rule applies- 80% of the biz comes from 20% of the customers. Gregg, just for the heck of it, can you give us some insight as to how long it took for the forum to hit certain milestones? I know I was number 138 to register here years ago but what was the timeframe to get to 1,000? 2,000? etc.

Yet another tale of a great product done in by poor customer service. I have watched this play out several times over the years and it never is pretty. As Mark has stated, Nick lives close to Randy's shop and he has a better handle on what is going on. That being said, maybe a PM to Nick to see if he can get this resolved will do more than a nasty phone call or email. Like Chuck, I want to buy from Perry's but the risk is too great. If I were to spot the pieces I desire at a show or a hobby shop, I would be buying them up in no time. Like the others before them, this is another story of a great product/caster who has tarnished their name and industry with poor communication and service. I continue to buy resin from only a handful of companies that have demonstrated their ability to earn my business. I prefer to buy in person if possible as that is the best way to see the item before shelling out the cash.

Not yet, but someone was working on a Cummins resin engine. Your best bet would be to use an existing kit engine and modify it to a close replica of what you are after.

FINALLY!!! 69 Chevelle Wagon is out!!
mikemodeler replied to dencon's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
As someone who is dealing with elderly parents and their care, Matt has my sympathies. I was looking forward to this kit as it would have been nice to have to build. Hopefully his family situation gets resolved soon and he can get back to casting and selling his stuff. I have bought some Dencon product in the past and it was very nice so I would expect the same on this body/kit. -
Nice to see a different color combination instead of the usual blues and reds. Keep posting your builds, it gives some of us the motivation to finish some of ours!

New Setting For Topics
mikemodeler replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Kinda like the little league games where no one keeps score so no one can be a "loser" or a "winner". Gregg mentioned that "common courtesy" and "common sense" should prevail but sometimes it doesn't and a war ensues. Trying to force people to use either one can be quite the task. I would think multiple topic posts on the same subject because someone locked theirs would only add to the problem of increased costs for Gregg to host this forum. Maybe this will be the beginning of a "toll road access" process for posting here? -
