Real or Model #172 FINISHED
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
Definitely photoshopped on to the background but hard to say if it is real or model..............I will find out Friday if my streak is alive or over! -
I like the red much better than the gray, even though the red is more common. That has come along quite nice and should be a great looking car when done. I hope to get to a show this coming weekend and Porky should be there with some resin and I think I need to get one of those chassis! Thanks for showing the updates.

So, now that you are married, are you aware of the three rings of marriage? 1. The engagement ring. 2. The wedding ring. Wait for it.................................. Almost there.............................. 3. The Suffer- ring !!!!!! Congrats, heres to many years of happiness! My wife and I will celebrate 21 years in 10 days and in typical fashion, I will be out of town on bizness. Makes about the third or fourth time I will not be home.....and she still let's me back in the house!

Chevrolet van
mikemodeler replied to ufe 64's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Nice start and I like the color choices! It will be nice to see this van back on the shelves later this year/early next year, whenever it comes out. -
Harry, you are hired for next year's contest! I will stop improving my skills and just let you work your magic. I will be sure to give you props as I accept my award, much like the actors do at the Academy Awards! Okay, enough kidding around, I think the contest did what Revell wanted and from the sounds of it, those of us that didn't enter this year will get our chance next year.

July Issue- did I miss it ?
mikemodeler replied to mikemodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for the replies, I was afraid my neighbor had taken up the hobby and might start going through my stash! Hopefully the July issue will be here soon. -
I was catching up on my reading last night and could not find the July issue of MCM. I was on vacation last month and while I trust my neighbor to bring in my mail, I did not find the July isse amongst the unread mail. While I don't believe he has taken up the hobby, he does have a bird and I am afraid he may have used the July issue to line the bottom of the cage! Anyone know if the July issue was sent out? I may have to confront the neighbor if it was!

'75 Jeep CJ5 plow
mikemodeler replied to Nick Winter's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Nice job there Nick, looks like a real vehicle. I remember seeing many of those back when I lived in the midwest, many of them sat all summer long and once October came around, they would be dragged out of the field and prepped for duty. Your skills continue to improve and impress.....keep them coming! -
Stepp“s CAN DO

As many others have said, very nice work and excellent details. I will be watching to see how this turns out. -
revell bagged kits?
mikemodeler replied to Aaronw's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Michaels' used to hold an event called "The Knack" which was a Saturday build at their stores. I remember going there with my daughter and she and I each built one of the Concept Camaro's from Revell. This was about 4 years ago and then I remember seeing those same kits in their closeout section for $5.00 each and I drove to every Michael's I could find to scoop them up but only got 3 more kits. They also did that with the Impala police car kit and I was able to 3 or 4 of them. Revell is great about offering up the kits cheap (basically at cost, I think) for events in the hopes that it will generate interest and future customers. -
where do you buy paints in quantity?
mikemodeler replied to DrewCfromSC's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Drew, You do not mention any specific colors, brands, or sizes but assuming you are talking about the typical hobby sprays, check with a LHS and see if he would cut you a break if you ordered in quantity. He might be able to get a break from his supplier if he places a large order. You might also check with Tower Hobbies as they will offer discounts on some products if you order them in quantity. I would also check with Modelroundup as they have started carrying paint as of late. Please let us know what you find out! -
Proposed new forum topic
mikemodeler replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Now see there, who knew the General Lee had air conditioning? M/T valve covers? I will have to get busy sourcing those parts for my version. Question for you accuracy fanatics- What color blue is that on the inner fenders and firewall? I want to be sure that I am correct for fear of being scolded here on the forum. -
Proposed new forum topic
mikemodeler replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Let's take it a step further and include all Generals ! I mean why should we limit it to just General Lee? Aren't there other Generals out there, like General Motors? Really folks, it is a hobby, that is all! (for me at least, life is too short) -
Do you shop online?
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I spread it around as best I can. I will shop online for those items that cannot be bought locally. I am lucky in that I travel throughout the Carolinas and Virginia for work so I have found some decent LHS and Hobbytown USA locations that can feed my need for plastic. Sometimes I end up paying more than I would online but instant gratification is a powerful thing. I have used only a few online retailers and like others have stated, it is primarily for those items that I can't get in person. Hobby Lobby is great if you have a coupon and need to stock up on certain kits or luck upon some closeout deals. Like using them for paint and knives too and when they have display cases at 50% off, I load up! -
Thanks for clarifying that Aaron, I knew there was a formula but could not locate it. I do remember someone building a homemade booth with a Dayton fan and ran it through a 5 gallon pail that had a charcoal pile and water to dissapate the fumes so they wouldn't have to duct it outside. Not sure if that is a workable solution but sounds like it could work.
-
Harry, I think Aaron was referring to a recommended air flow that was posted on the forum in another post about spray booths. IIRC, Klaus Raddatz had detailed how to construct your own spray booth and he referenced some specs about how much CFM the motor should move based upon the size of the booth. While I like to tinker with things and have built a spray booth (minus the motor), I would rather spend the $$$ on something that was engineered properly and will handle my lacquer fumes without worry.

kinda like that warning on a pack of cigarettes or the side of a McDonalds coffee cup, huh?
-
Very impressive and great color choices as they stand out well against that silver. It would take me a month of Sundays to be able to figure out, lay out and spray those colors and you made it look so easy! Can't wait to see this one cleared and polished.
-
NO ! Do a search here of the topic "paintbooth" and you will get a bunch of good, informative answers on building a booth and how to properly vent it. Using your shop vac to vent a paintbooth is NOT recommended.

Real or Model #171 FINISHED!
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
took the easy way out and went with real. it has been a long time since I was wrong so hopefully the streak continues! -
Hobby Lobby stores are great if you want to pick up kits at their 30-40% off sales or coupon deals but they will never be an outlet for new releases. As some have mentioned, they vary in the selection and size of their departments and I would guess that has something to do with the manager and sales history. I use them as a source for duplicate kits that I may want for kitbashing but that is about it. Where I live in the Charlotte area, they are about my only source unless I drive an hour away for a real hobby shop or a well stocked Hobby Town USA, which I know sounds funny but I do have a couple of those!

I would like to apologize.
mikemodeler replied to John Teresi's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not sure what all the problems were but I can say that whenever I see one of John's builds, they truly are impressive and we could all learn from him. In regards to the interpretation of one's comments, I am reminded of something one of my bosses once told me when we got email years ago. He warned me to be careful in my comments as an email, much like a post on a forum or chat room, is an one way conversation. The person on the other end cannot always detect the tone or inference you make with your comments. Add in the thin skin and quick response tempers some of us have and it makes for a perfect storm. I am glad that Harry was quick to see a problem developing and acted in the right manner. It is a shame that he has to watch us so closely but again we all think, act and behave differently. Keep building them John, I like to see what you are working on. -
need advice on some items
mikemodeler replied to Jerred C.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
scan some of the posts here in the tips and tricks area for some hints on weathering and what some folks use. If you have any of the back issues, there have been some great articles on how to get realistic looking results with some products found in a craft store, usually for less money than Micro Mark. Save your money on the plastic cutter. As Harry mentioned, a razor saw works much better and gives cleaner results. I had one a long time ago and it was better at melting plastic instead of cutting it! -
We're having a heat wave...
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry, don't feel bad, here in Charlotte we have had over 40 days of 90+ degree weather and might set a new record. The rain has stopped for now so I can sympathize with you on the "tan" grass! Worst part is that our soil is red clay and when it gets hot and stops raining, it dries up and my house starts shifting- making it hard to close doors and funny cracks start pop up in the drywall! Like I tell my in-laws that moved from Arid-zona to be near us....Unlike Phoenix, this is a "wet heat"! -

Model, just something says it is a diecast model to me.
