I think it will soften at least some plastics. I use it often to take tampo off of diecasts, but I've learned to keep the stuff away from the windows, or I will have to polish out the crazing. However, I don't know if the clear plastic used in cheap Chinese diecasts is the same as colored styrene used in our kits. DO run a test before you let a body soak in the stuff!

Very interesting collection! Murder Taurus, Murder Camaro, Murder BMW, Murder Jeep...hellsbells, buddy, you're a stone-cold serial killer! Just out of curiosity, would you like to finish things in something besides flat black? Anyway, great craftsmanship, good design eye, clean builds. Murder on!

Styrene casting test, not a complete failure
Snake45 replied to Oldmopars's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Has anyone tried casting using embossing powder and the heat gun that melts it? I have both, but haven't tried it yet. -
The Revell snapper kit is quite nice and accurate, and won't bog you down with details or fiddly final assembly. If you LIKE details and fiddly final assembly, Any of the Revell '69 Camaro kits is fine. The Z/28 and Yenko seem to be easiest to find at the moment.

Interesting. I'm looking for that "brushed," hand-sanded look. Got a couple different ideas on how to do it.

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
Snake45 replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I wonder what happened to the original AMT '69 Elky molds. I don't think they were ever updated or cartoonized, so maybe they still exist? But then it's never been reissued.... -
Another thing you can do to free up memory is open Task Manager, scroll down to Background Processes, and look for CefSharp.BrowserSubprocess. These seem to be ads on websites you have open, and they can build up. Click on each one (there might be a dozen or more) and End Process. Websites you have open might go blank, but just hit the refresh arrow (or F5 key) and the site will come right back up. I've freed up as much as 20% of my memory by doing this, and it only takes a minute or two.

It's something you can build dozens of interesting, accurate, and historic variants of and never once have to resort to building a jacked-up 4X4 or phantom "Batmobile."

Anyone ever used glass stain on chrome tail lights?
Snake45 replied to Monty's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've done that. I've also had amazing results with Testor Clear Red Acryl. Recently I "rescued" a Revell '68 Dart that was missing two of its four red taillights. I was originally going to make the two missing ones, and then got lazy and popped out the two I had and replaced them all with about four coats of the Clear Red Acryl. You wouldn't notice it if I didn't tell you. -
Polish polish everywhere there is polish
Snake45 replied to SCRWDRVR's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'll color-sand with GM Wetordry, grits 1000, 1200, 1500, and 2000, which I use depends on the exact job. I seldom use more than two of them. I polish with Wright's Silver Cream, a silver polish I get in the housecleaning section of Walmart. I wash the ick out of the door lines etc with a toothbrush under warm running water. Plan on doing this at least twice, as it seems you always miss some, no matter how careful you are or how hard you try. -
I have a program called System Mechanic which lets me clean out my memory. I use Task Manager to see where it is at any given time, and if it's over 70%, or so, I run the SM to clean it out. I do this four or five or six times a day. It's actually much less of a hassle than it might sound.

Yup. Happened to me three times in the last few days. After some friendly chiding, I think at least one of the guys got the message, though. If you absolutely HAVE to do this, at least have the common courtesy to say something nice about the OP's model, ferpissake.

Agree. Although I'd like to acknowledge that we seem to have broken one of the forum's most valuable and respected members of this bad habit in the last year. (But I ain't namin' names. ) I appreciate it!

I was wondering if you'd weigh in here. I actually already have THREE Cobras on the shelf--the blue 427, the yellow "survivor" I built in 1966 (which you've seen), and a nice green AMT 260 I built in the early '90s and have never posted here. Eventually I want to do one in bare metal, if I can figure out how to get the effect I'm looking for. And then unless I get a Daytona Coupe somehow, I'll be pretty much Cobra-ed up. Hey, it's not like Cobras are '69 Camaros.

This would be a good time for them to bring back the '64 Comet, even if it is a "Craftsman," what with the Moebius '65 now available for kitbashing.
-
Yeah, that'll work. I'm planning to do exactly that for the hood of the AMT '55 Chevy 2DS.

I've never seen a Wix but it looks nice from Swede's picx. I doubt I'll ever see one for $10 or anything close to it. The low price was the main reason I bought the Welly. As you can see I already have a Cobra on my shelf and didn't really NEED another one but I find it hard to walk away from a good-looking bargain.

Thanks for the kind words. See, that's how you do it!
-
To be honest I didn't research that, just assumed they'd be white in 1965. Easy enough to fix. Thanks for the heads-up!

I'm not a fan of rust buckets but for some reason I like this one, it's pretty well done without being overdone. Model on!

Very clean build, very sharp looking! Different and therefore interesting! Well done and model on!

WIX '67 Chevelle SS396--Now with Snake-Fu! 1/25/18
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Diecast Corner
Last night I got the rest of the unwanted tampo off, and it seemed to go much smoother than my first attempt for some reason. Only took me about half an hour to get it all off. Preliminary testing indicates that a Revell '67 Chevelle tub will fit in. Thinking of using the dog-puke-green one from the pro street kit and leaving my stock kit alone. I'll have to paint it but that's not a big deal. White side panels and seats, black floors and dashboard. It's not real apparent in the pic above, but the black rear panel (between the taillights) is a sticker, and not perfectly placed, either. I'll probably remove it, paint the panel, then cut out the SS emblem and replace that in the middle. -
HAHAHAHA! I thought you were talking about the new "Bad Chad" show on Discovery.

Anyone having issues with a thread loading..?
Snake45 replied to disabled modeler's topic in How To Use This Board
Happening to me too for a few days now, maybe one time in 6 or 8 when I click on a thread. I can either click out of it and reload, or I've discovered I can click the back arrow twice and the page will come up. (This is quicker.) -
Modelmaster 2 step Lacquer sprays
Snake45 replied to bluenote's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've done 3 models with the Model Master 2-step lacquers and was pleased with the results, and I didn't consider their flakes oversized. One I clear-coated, one I rubbed out directly (no clearcoat, but about 4 coats of the lacquer), and one I wanted a bit of an aged/weathered look so just left alone and the very slight sheen gave me just what I wanted. I'll use them again.
