Great SOD! Looks like you've got several projects that could be kicked through the goalposts without too much trouble. Remember, the perfect is the enemy of good enough. A flawed but completed model is better than a stalled project that will never be finished.

Oh my, all three of those builts look rescue-worthy and rescue-ready. I could have them cleaned up and back on the shelf in just a couple weeks, at most. Great wheel and tire sets, too. Congratulations on some GREAT scores! If you couldn't hit the lottery this weekend, this would be almost the next best thing!

What Do I Do?
Snake45 replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks! Curiosity was killing me! I can think of at least two or three people on this board who would love to have it, and are skilled enough to do it justice, and who are productive enough to actually get it done. (BTW, I'm not one of them.) -
Yeah, both those kits are absolute vintage Parts Mines.

Very cool! Now you need to build Strickler's Corvette Bronze '68 Z/28.

TRIM Nail Sticks Back at Walmart! Update 8/13/18
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
As a matter of fact, yes. I have a couple of pink ones that are #400 on one side and #600 on the other and they're pretty darn good when those grits are what I need. I also have one of the Large 3 Ways. The black side of it is the closest I've found to the black ones in the Trim package, but not quite as good. The white and gray parts are also okay but not as good as the Trims. Thing is, it wasn't cheap. I think I paid $2.99 or even $3.99 for one of these 3 Ways, whereas I was getting the three Trim boards--each double sided--for about $2 at Walmart. -
I had no idea what you were talking about, so I googled it. Found quite a few images and I'm sure some of them link to pages or articles with more information.

Paint Stripper for a Promo Car
Snake45 replied to Olderisbetter's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Somewhere I've got a badly warped early Corvair 4-door promo. If I can find it, I'll see what rubbing alcohol does to some small hidden area. It sounds like oven cleaner (lye, basically) is a no-go. -
M2 also does the '66 GT350 and the '69 Camaro (several variations of each) and First Gear also does the '69 Camaro. All of these are so nice I wouldn't be interested in these new ones unless they're VERY cheap.
-
Same here. I saw prices from about $11 up to the $70 and $80 range. Yeah, for that reason I probably wouldn't be interested in the '69 Camaro or the '65-66 Mustang. Got plenty of both of those (unless these are CHEAP, which I'm kinda doubting). The boat-tail Riv is unique but just doesn't appeal to me, nor does the '80 (?) Trans Am. Might buy the Maverick if it looks good and doesn't cost too much (no more than an M2). I like the '67-'69 Cuda and would definitely be interested in that (don't have one in diecast) if the price isn't too bad. What's the brown thing in the upper right corner? A '70s GM Colonnaide of some kind, but I can't quite make out make or year. That could be interesting. And the "fine print" at the bottom of the page mentions a "C3" Corvette, but it's not shown. Could be interested in that, depending on exact year and price.

Very nice, very clean build. Kudos for removing the incorrect lower body trim strip. This model is so nice it would be worth the investment of some resin corrected taillights. Well done and model on!
-
My guess is, they couldn't make the body mold work with that corner "fleshed out" in styrene. Although AMT and MPC seem to have done it no problem. When I built one of these, I just touched up those "wings" on the window with body paint. If I were to do it again, I'd probably cut them off and mold them into the body sails before painting.

Since it's a phantom drag car, maybe you can make that work for you. Maybe give it a lizard-ish or snake-ish or fishy name and graphics?

What Do I Do?
Snake45 replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have no doubt you'll find a worthy, loving home for it. There are a lot of great builders on this board and I'm sure you know who would really appreciate whatever it is. And by the way, this falls into the category of Good Problems. -
Used my HL coupon today to get the reissued AMT '40 Ford sedan. Now I have less than zero interest in this body style, but the kit seems to be a "parts mine" and worth the discounted price for parts alone. And I'm thinking of maybe trying to chop the body into a Ranchero-ish kind of thing, which might be kind of cool. Since I wasn't wanting to build it anyway, no big loss if that idea goes horribly sideways.

I believe AMT had it right back in 1969, but the later (currently in reissue) '70-'72 kit has it just a little too high in the rear. There is enough meat in it to file/sand the right shape out of it, though. I've done it--twice. The MPC body has something similarly wrong with the roof. I'm working on fixing it on a '75 promo. Not sure I've got it perfect, but I think I've got it closer.
-
Also, the little "wings" at the ends of the rear window. Definitely Revell.

Grrr... Seriously, Flies?
Snake45 replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Don't give up yet. When the paint dries, pick or cut the flies out, and it might be possible to polish out their "footprints." I routinely polish out dust and other paint boogers. Or a second coat of paint over the spot might do the trick. All is not hopeless yet! -
Or rivet-counters. Or people who are just used to working with fine details every day.

AMT '67-'68 Camaro Review & Improvements
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Yes, that would work even better. And here's an improvement to that idea: Remove the rear window trim entirely by cutting or filing. Then cut and fit the rear window to fit THAT space. Then foil (or paint) the trim onto the glass before installing it. This way you eliminate any possible gap between the glass and trim (and hide the edge, to boot), and the joint between body and "trim" wouldn't look unnatural. -
I'd buy the Barracuda if reasonably priced. I think there are quite a few here who'd love to have that Riviera.
-
Very nice! Well done and model on!

Pretty much the story of my modeling life.
