Corvette guys. need some advice
Snake45 replied to gtx6970's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Ah, okay. Did some googling. Found you a resin body, but it's from the comically misnamed "Reliable Resin," so, never mind. It's definitely stretched ahead of the gills. Possibly a bit behind, too. -
Corvette guys. need some advice

Bill, I'm at work and can't see your pic (blocked). What car is it? -
I have the green Duster I need to build one of these days. I also bought several prepainted Phantom Vics just for parts and kitbashing when the K&B Toys closed them out cheap.

The First Air Force One, Flying Again...
Snake45 replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I once asked my Dad what was his favorite military airplane of all time to fly. He'd flown T-6, B-25, B-26, T-33, and F-86, among others, but surprised me when he said the C-121 Connie. He loved that airplane! Of course, they were cutting-edge brand new when he was a kid, and he grew up wanting to be an airline pilot, so I guess it's not so surprising after all. -
All the women on Lucifer.

I watched it at work, and was skipping around. Did he heat-treat and quench the blade? If so, I missed it. If he didn't, one wonders why he didn't just start with a more suitably sized/shaped chunk of steel instead of going through all the torch-forging business. (And why laboriously cut the bolt head off one lug at a time? Why not just cut the whole head off? Looks like he had enough material.)

I just wish AMT or Pactra Candy Pagan Gold were still available. It's the perfect color for this car and I don't know of anything commonly available that's comparable. Maybe Turn Signal Amber lightened with white or a pale yellow?
-
I'm pretty sure I could do that if the mood struck me. But one has to wonder, "Why?"
-
I was just rereading some old model car mags and the reviews of the Z/28 and Baldwin-Motion Camaros at the time sort of hinted that somewhere along the line, the carbs got switched between the two.

Thanks for the detailed writeup and pics. I've never seen either of these, would prolly buy one if I ran across it and the price was right. I prefer the color of the "green" one but the color's not a deal-breaker if the body or details are more accurate on the other one. Are they both the same size? Do they seem to be true 1/24, or, like some of these things, are they a little "under"? That wouldn't bother me at all as I'd like it better if it were closer to 1/25. (I have a couple 1/26 diecasts that don't look out of place on my shelf.) Thanks again for the preview!

Glue Bomb Makeover: '68 Motion Performance SS427 Corvette
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Cars
That theory makes a good deal of sense. I don't remember how solidly the body was glued to the chassis, if at all, but I didn't have any trouble getting it apart. Maybe he just didn't want to bother. -
Very, VERY nice! Best color combo for these ever! This is exactly what I want mine to look like, if I ever get around to building it. Well done and model on!

I didn't get them perfect, but they're hella better than what comes out of the box. Did this a couple years before I had internet and the ability to google-image a million pics of Vettes from every possible angle in two seconds. All I had to work with was the pics in a couple Corvette books, and a couple old AMT and MPC bodies for comparison. Turns out the AMT and MPC bodies aren't right either, they're just wrong in a prettier, less eye-jarring way. Oh well, it is what it is. I'll do a "good" one someday.

I thought this toy-show find would be another quickie cleanup, polish-out and Snake-Fu project, like the '69 Charger I did a couple months ago. The dark blue metallic paint looked solid, even though it had a few dust boogers and runs; the thing seemed to have "good bones." 90 percent of the paint polished out quite nicely, but in color-sanding out the runs and boogers, I burned through in a few places. But I determined that the paint was Model Master Arctic Blue, or something VERY close to it, which I could match, so I drove on. This was a great chance to try out my new $20 Walmart C&H double action airbrush, using it to touch up only the burned through areas and a brief spot around them, just enough to try to blend it in with careful polishing. Here's what the paint looks like after touchup but before polish-out. (Final polished pics will be in Under Glass pics--hopefully, very soon.) What red you still see will either be touched up with brush, or Silver Sharpied (i.e., wheel opening trim). No, it's not perfect, but it could pass for a home garage or high school shop paint job, or a perhaps a partial repaint for accident or rust repair. It'll look good enough for a late '70s high school hot rod, daily driver or street bomber. Thanks for looking, as, as always, comments welcome.

I like this a lot, and your paint looks very close to '57 Harbor Blue, my favorite '57 Chevy color. Well done and model on!

Very nice! I built one of these a couple years ago and was shocked at how crisp the body emblems still are on this kit.

Let's See Some Glue Bombs!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks! I found out last night that I can scrape the black paint off the wheel spokes with a wooden toothpick, but it's slow and tedious going. If it doesn't work out, gray spokes will definitely be Plan B. -

I didn't, but I just went and looked it up. Is it better than it was? And did you have fun doing it? Then you did it right. Model on! -
Recycling and repurposing old junk is always cool. Good for you! Well done and model on!

Very nice, Jim--as ususal!

70/1 Camaro wheel question
Snake45 replied to br67's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
They would have been in the pipeline, as still being offered (standard, I think) on '70 Chevelle SS. It would have just been a matter of proper size and backspacing to fit the Camaro. -

Wonders? Sometimes, but not usually. But the whole idea with some of these projects is just to have fun, something we sometimes forget in our "serious" modeling. -

It might look a little barn find-y in the pics, but real life it just looks like a dirty model that wasn't built all that well in the first place (though not horribly, or I wouldn't have messed with it). -
Very cool! I'll either be airbrushing Testor Arctic Blue, or use a can of a dark blue "pearl" enamel from them I got awhile back. While I've rattlecanned a good deal of the new Testor lacquer, and airbrushed gallons of their enamels cut with lacquer thinner, I literally can't remember the last time I rattlecanned any of their enamels. BTW, here's the unrestored survivor MPC Charger I built in 1968. Would like to build this one along the same lines, but, you know, better.
