  1. Starrett is the de-facto tool for professional machinists. I have some of their items (like steel rulers) and there is not dout that they are top quality and will last you a lifetime (if you treat them right). However for modeling a $20 digital caliper is more than sufficient. Like I said, I got mine decades ago and is more than sufficient for what I need. It is stainless steel and has resolution of 0.0005". More than what I need for building plastic models for my hobby. I choose to spend the big bucks on other tools, like my Lindstrom cutters or a PACE soldering/desoldering rework station. Then there are Sheline mill and lathe. I also almost exclusively use PCB carbide drill bits with 1/8" shafts.
  2. When I go to that link I get: This listing (**********) has been removed, or this item is not available.
  3. It really is not that difficult. Much easier than assembling a jigsaw puzzle. But not as easy as um, paint-by-numbers pictures.
  4. That one I recognized easily.
  5. Nice! I never seen that kit. Who makes and where can one buy one?
  6. In the past, when posting a message, there used to be a "view source" or "view code" button above the text entry window. That used to toggle between the human readable formatted message and the HTML code of that message. I used to edit the HTML code manually when the forum was not allowing me to to insert photos from other websites. It also comes in handy when someone posts a photo which shows up as broken link. It gives me the ability to see the URL of the broken image. It seems that this button disappeared . Any idea what happened?
  7. I have been using a $20 Stainless Steel Digital 6" caliper from Harbor Freight for over 10 years now. Initially I did give it a bit of a tuneup as it didn't have smooth action, but other than that, all I change in it is the batteries. I'm suspect that it uses the same electronics as the expensive brand-name calipers. Hey, if it breaks and I can't fix it, I'lljust get another one for $20 (r even less if I catch one on sale). Actually, don't tell anybody, but I already bought a spare (just in case).
  8. Outstanding! Mark, is that real fiberglass or are you using some sort of tissue, fabric-softenrer sheet, or similar material?
  9. I could have picked up this kit when it was still available in retail (from Hobby Link Japan). But at that time I had mixed feelings about whether I love it or hate it. Now I'm regretting not picking up at least one of them kits. The car kind of grew on me, and even if I still hated it I could now sell it for big bucks.
  10. Some people (like me) refuse to join "the collective". Why then are you still posting on this forum?
  11. I also recommend that since you are new to photography and DSLRs, you should pick up a book on photography basics. There are lots of books on the subjects (maybe there is even a Photography for Dummies book out there). Or find some free online resources. It really helps when you understand things like f-stop, lens focal length, exposure time, white balance, depth-of-field, etc. etc. It will make you a better photographer. Like others have said, it can even become your new hobby (whether you are planning on it or not).
  12. They are constantly doing something about it: they delete the bogus listings and probably delete the user account that created the listing. But the scammers just create new user and new listings. it goes on and on.
  13. And I thought that since he was so busy with resin casting he had not time to build or collect model kits. Speaking of RMCoM, I hope he keeps it going for the foreseeable future. We lost Modelhaus, losing another top-quality resin caster would hurt really bad!
  14. I have not used them yet but I was told that they did all the plating (metalizing) for Modelhaus. I also had few less-than-perfect experiences with Chrome Tech so I'm ready to move on. I just don't have any parts that need plating right now.
  15. I was wondering the same thing. What do they gain frm the scam? The payment I'm sure is refunded to the buyer (by either PayPal or eBay) but they do have the buyer's address. But what good is that for them? BTW, I reported one of these scam listings last night - it is already gone.
  16. Is Norm a big collector of rare models? I know he is an excellent resin caster, but I didn't know he collects models.
  17. I own a 1985 Eldorado, and all I can say is that this thing us UGLY! Here is a 1960 Eldorado Hearse. And a 1959 Eldorado Ambulance.
  18. While I don't want to scare anybody, the official word is here. As with all government regulations, it seems very complicated. Having said that, I have been buying model (and some other) items online from foreign sellers (through eBay, Amazon, etc.) for about 17 years and I have never been charged any duties.
  19. After exchanging couple of PMs with fiat boy I realized that I missed the fact that he mentioned that he was a subscriber to the magazine. So his question is not as strange as I first thought.
  20. I would be cautious with this one too. To begin with, it has a slightly amber tint and also since it is UV-cured, it does not (by design) have any UV protection, so it might also yellow in time.
  21. Yes, I agree - I have experienced this problem few times and I no longer use any of the epoxy adhesives (especially the 5-minute type) to represent clear lenses. Also, most epoxies have slight amber tint to begin with. But I had it turn deep amber after several years.
  22. If anybody solely use any online photo hosting site for the only copy of a photo, that is foolish. I would not feel sorry for them if they lost them. The only reason I upload photos to online sites it to share them with others. Mostly in online forums. I always have multiple copies stored locally (one on a live hard drive on my PC and couple of backups on removable media). I like the idea of hosting photos for a forum, on the forum itself - that way they will be viewable (in the posts) for as long as the forum is around.
  23. I only use my photos on the forum I'm posting them to. So I like the idea of having the photo hosted here for the posts I create here. And now we can do just that. Of course I have all my photos on my PC and also 2 copies of backups.
