Not when it pertains to display models such as the ship kits from Artesania Latina, etc. These models were not designed to be actually sailed in your bathtub or local pond. The first layer of basswod planking is to establish the hull lines. The second layer, usually narrower walnut or tanganyika strips are applied as a finishing layer; and, depending on the vessel, green colored rectangular wood pieces are applied as the second layer , from the waterline to keel, to simulate copper sheathing plates. My Mamoli 1/93 U.S.S. Constitution is a double plank on frame model.

Short of incorporating fiber optics, in combination with LEDs/SMDs, to actually illuminate them, there is no plausible way to represent the daytime running lights in a functioning state using paint, coloring or material.

Get this HQT Stainless Saw Set. They are thin enough (about 0.3mm thick) to slide under the runners of the glass and cut it out without damaging the body. There's a set of stainless scribers which you'll also find indispensable. Both sets are better than using a No.11 X-Acto blade to make panel lines or open doors and trunks because the kerf is only 0.3mm wide. No excess plastic is removed which results in oversized gaps. I've used both to remove glued in glass, and in disassembling heavily glued parts, from built models I wish to rework. The scribers come in handy in loosening front and rear glass which are solidly glued in place. Use either of the top two scribers by running the tips under the window trim until the glass pops out. Then, as I previously mentioned, use the saw blades under the runners to remove the entire piece.

The technical term is cheap.

I agree. The Johan Cadillac V16s are some of the most detailed and superbly engineered kits ever produced. Compared to other Johan kits, they are readily available and inexpensive.
