Rattle can lacquer finish questions
atomicholiday replied to atomicholiday's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Interesting. Both the Pintera and Camaro were both shot with just three coats. That's probably why I burned through on the Camaro. Lesson learned. One difference between the two is the amount of water used in the wet sanding process. With the Camaro, I just dipped the pads and started sanding, so there was a lot of water on the model surface. But on the Pintera, I dabbed most of the water off the pads, leaving them just damp enough to still have a lubricating effect. In my mind, this should allow me to see color on the pads if I go through the clear coat. Thanks for that tip Steve. Of course, I was also being much more careful around the edges too. -

Rattle can lacquer finish questions
atomicholiday replied to atomicholiday's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
So any who’s been following my plight for the past few months knows I’ve been having a heck of a time getting a decent finish, and when I do, I screw up wet sanding. (See my thread on touching up burn through) At one point I told my wife I was going to burn all my kits and tools. I needed a win. I think I can say I got it finally. Just finished rubbing this one out. It ain’t perfect, but it’s a far cry better than I’ve been putting out lately. The kits are safe for now. Just don’t let me play with matches for a while. Thanks to all for your advice. -

Those are both stunning. At a glance the Caddie looks real. I actually have an airbrush. Just need to figure out how to vent it from my basement. -

Show us your summer toys! (Non-auto related)

Heck yeah! Stripe that baby up and let's see it! My Work Horse was heavily modified by putting a Hurst sticker on the fender. Pretty sure it added a few HP.? -
Wow. I love everything about this build. Awesome job.?

I have an old Work Horse lawn tractor that will do wheelies. My folks bought it new in ‘82’. When I was old enough they had me mow. First time I dumped the clutch by accident, it brought the front wheels off the ground about a foot or more. Scared me half to death! Then I started doing it all the time. I can’t believe that old mower still works at all. -
Looks just about as good as it gets. Beautiful build. I just picked one of these up recently.

Time to get back on this one. I’m starting to rub out the finish and I just finished the hood. More to come.

Can you touch up burn through?

I ended up burning through again. A little less than originally, but enough. As this body was intended to be a practice piece for painting, polishing, and foiling, I’m going to concede defeat and take it for a swim. We’ll start over and see what (if anything) I’ve learned. This is why I never finish a kit. Frustrating, but there’s no way I’m giving up this time around until I can get a decent finish. I feel like I’m getting closer, and maybe I’m being too picky. But I know what I want to see and I won’t accept less from myself. Thanks to all who have chimed in. Your input is invaluable to my continued quest. To be continued…? -
What do you drive?
atomicholiday replied to gasman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In the winter I mainly drive a Wrangler. So far nothing seems to phase it as far as bad roads are concerned. In the summer I flip back and forth between the Jeep and my 2013 Honda Civic Si coupe. Both are great fun in the summer for totally different reasons. -
That color is really cool. Looks like it’s got some color shift going on. Nice!

Can you touch up burn through?
atomicholiday replied to atomicholiday's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
What have we learned this afternoon? DO NOT WIPE 91% ISO ALCOHOL ON YOUR FRESHLY POLISHED BODY!??. It immediately started to eat the clear coat. This is after only two swipes. Rookie mistake. So… after a mad dash to the kitchen sink to wash it off, I think I stopped the reaction in time. A quick wet sanding of the offending area and it looks ok. Although the burn thru area is a little bigger now. At least I know now that there isn’t any polishing compound left. On with the paint! Being lacquer, I had to work fast. The paint was flashing on the pallet while I was trying to work it. This is pretty sloppy right now. I’m hoping I can blend it without burning through again. Going to go ridiculously slow with that process. For now I’ll let it cure for a day or two. Then try the same technique with the clear. -

Thanks for all your input guys. All good advice, and since I don’t have much to lose, I’ll try the simplest method first and escalate if necessary. So here’s what I’m going to try: 1. Clean the whole fender with alcohol to hopefully remove any Novus residue. 2. The red is from a Dupli Color can, so I’ll spray enough onto a pallet to use a fine brush and touch up only the burn-thru area. 3. Give it a day or two and very lightly buff it smooth. 4. Repeat the process with the clear coat. If the above steps fail, I’ll try masking and repainting just the fender. And if that doesn’t work or I completely screw the paint up, it’ll take a swim in the purple pond. I’ll post pics as I go and keep you updated. Just have to say this. This forum and its members are awesome. It’s nice to know that if you have issues, problems, questions, etc, all you have to do is ask and you’ll get answers from some of the finest people in the hobby. -
That looks REALLY good to me.

Everything about this is just cool. Love both cars. And the section of track. Great display idea.
