  1. Great show yesterday, Nice to see everyone and meet some new people! They appear to have posted some photos on their website: http://www.threeriversautomodelers.net/2015-show--contest-pictures.html Lots of top notch work on the tables.
  2. Great show for sure! it was nice to see everyone and all of the great models on display... Already excited for next year! Thanks for this sweet shot of the grimmy!!!
  3. that depends... I have gone from a few hours, up to a couple days...it doesn't seem to matter much as long as its dry, I know the parts on the engine I did entirely in one evening. Black base, clear and Alclad. Thank you for the compliment!
  4. Thanks Danger! That is good to know, i will have to try it on something.
  5. I have heard it doesn't work well, but i haven't tried it personally.. My guess is the future is too "hard" of a finish for the alclad to bite into... therefore effecting durability. What i have been doing, and it seems to work really well is using duplicolor enamel gloss black, followed by duplicolor clear straight from the can...(something i read on here somewhere) The clear occasionally fogs/frosts but i keep a heat gun next to me when i paint, a quick gentle hit with that and the frosting goes away. As soon as i set down the can of clear i get the airbrush ready to shoot the alclad.... I try to shoot the alclad within 10-15minutes of the clear being shot, this way it is still somewhat soft and the solvents in the alclad can do their job effectively. This is surprisingly quick and pretty durable for handling... I would assume this technique would be quicker than future.. just wanted to throw in my .02 All of this chrome was done with this technique... in one evening.... no top coat.
  6. Thank you all for watching this project progress... running out of time, but still enjoying this bad boy. Got some paint on last night... very happy with the color choice... a bit vintage with a modern twist.. Also its quite obvious I do not know how to build a "rat rod" and only know how to make show rods... haha Hit up the local RiteAid Pharmacy for some paint....4 bottles... $3.00 Frame was going to be matte finish... but the color pop'ed so nice when glossy... it got a few coats of gloss clear. Base coat Clear coat Started painting the accent color Then top coated that with some dullcoat with a bit of pearl mixed in. and a quick lack of patience mock up to see the colors together. Finally i added some wash and Tamiya weathering pigments to the seat and it really brought out the detail...
  7. Thanks guys!! Although I highly doubt this is going to be complete for this upcoming weekend.. I am still marching on... worst case it is done for Toledo.. this weekend was somewhat productive. Going to try and sling some paint tonight. Got the seat painted... alclad over satin black... still going to add a wash, or some powder. Mounted the grille shell from the 29' pickup. Then I tried about a dozen headlight configurations.. I like low headlamps... but some of these just got a bit too wonky for me. Finally settled on this style and location... and started on a tubular intake. Intake done... Scratch-built some zoomie headers... Progress is happening... just not as fast as i would like.. haha... oh well
  8. Thanks guys! The plan is to have it done next weekend for the Pittsburgh show... we shall see how that goes... either way this, my gremlin and the Riviera will be at the NNL for sure. Thanks bob! I did use the cutter for the seat but i drilled all the holes by hand... I have the cutter try and cut the holes, but when you get this small they aren't perfect circles and its a bear to flick the centers out... but by having the cutter score them it gives me a great guide to drill them by hand.
  9. Cool project! My Dad is actually working on one of these currently to replicate his 1969 coupe.. The story about how your acquired the resin kit is eerily similar. He had previously made a 1/18" diecast by frankenstien-ing 4 kits together. (his real car has the shelby rear panel and side scoops) I will be following along for sure!
  10. Are we really down to a week on these? this weekend is gonna be fun..
  11. Dennis this is awesome! Loving the purple glass... ill be watching this for sure
  12. thanks guys! im happy with it, although I wish I would have cleaned them up some more.... now that i see these large photos.. haha... oh well.
  13. Little update... I need to get cranking on this thing... hopefully this weekend will be productive. Firewall made! and the seat... Split Bench Bomber seat... impressed myself on this one... still needs some clean up, but i was excited to take photos.. haha plan is to make plaid cushions...
  14. Im not quite sure how to respond to this tactfully. I will say i have been following your builds, and your knowledge of 3d printing is one of the reasons I didn't purchase a much much more expensive printer at an earlier date. For that I thank you... I would not have been at all satisfied with that purchase. Now to me the first photo is decent... granted it still needs cleanup, some edges filed... hand work..etc.. but once that is done and the intake is in place, it is passable as a kit part. If you want a printer you can pull your item off the bed and paint and take to a your local model show.... this is not the printer for you... and will indeed be a "waste of money" This may be the printer for you if: want to make complex shapes that would be impossible, or incredibly labor intensive in styrene (not this engine, in all honestly I should have just scratch-built it) realize small details will need to be added back in by hand after the print is complete realize some sanding and filling will be necessary to remove grow marks. know how to 3d model are okay with 85% of your prints ending up in the scrap bin have an extreme amount of patience with technology have little to no knowledge of 3d printing want to spend under 400.00 Like any piece of technology its learning its limitations and then working around them to get the best results. Would i buy another one? probably not is it fun to play with? Oh yeah Will I keep trying to make model parts until I find its niche in my workshop? Yup...
  15. Thank you all for the comments! I put this project off to the side for now... it doesn't have to be complete until march, so its a bit of a "back bench build" Nah.. it cant really hold that sort of detail... last night i tried cutting out .020 circles and just ended up with a dot, however that did give me a center mark to drill a hole with a pin-vise. I wish it would cut thicker stuff as well.....I am having some success layering .020 to make the parts I want. I have a rat rod build that has become somewhat of a showcase for what can be done with the cutter.
  16. Thanks Martin! I somehow cant stop building 60's customs... I guess its just my thing.. haha Thank you bob, its a technique I read on here somewhere..... Twisted up some .010 square stock in my fingers until it was no longer straight, then i glued it on... once it was dry I took a dremel round rasp bit and rolled it over it by hand... The bit looks somewhat like one of these http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mtU4X_nlfbT3ArF5Pnowpag.jpg chucked it up in the pin vice and rolled it over the strip... This was my first time trying it and I was very impressed with how well it worked.
  17. Welcome Bill! There is actually a show coming up in your area... I plan on making the trip down.
  18. Thank you! I use illustrator, but you could use AutoCad as well.... The software for the cutter lets you import .DXF files. Thanks Dennis.. yes it is a cam driven Supercharger, and you are reading my mind on the multi-carbs... Still trying to figure that out.. Thanks everyone for the compliments! I didn't get much done over the weekend, spent most of it organizing my workshop.. All these new toys were eating up a lot of work space. Yesterday I created the inner body structure, then covered it with some BMF and finally gave it a circular scuff with a ScotchBrite Pad. My current plan is to have the entire body done in this bare metal look with some washes and weathering here and there. I added some simulated welds, and then gave it a test piece of BMF and a wash.
  19. Not yet... But a little closer to done! Motor mounts and cross member made and installed. And now onto the engine... Going with a flathead with a twist.. Using the shaft drive supercharger from the duesie... Wanted to try something a bit more unique. Not quite sure what I'm going to do for the carb/carbs yet... That's tomorrow's adventure.
  20. Very nice as usual James! I love the slant back bed.
  21. Thanks guys!! And Dennis thank you for your input, feedback and help. Andy this is all your fault.. This build, this cutter, the 3d printer.., I blame you., haha Got the front suspension on tonight...This baby is free standing! Engine mounts up next.. Need to do some trimming on the body to get it low enough... But I set it on and so far so good
  22. completely understand what you are saying here... And I agree... My plan was to use a torque tube style drive shaft, reason one was to keep with a 2 link rear... And reason 2 was the drive shaft will be so high in the passenger compartment, I figure a rotating shaft would be quite unsafe... In your opinion would that make the situation a little more prototypically correct?
  23. I haven't checked this thread for awhile... Amazing job Joe!... all those finicky little linkage parts are real patience testers, you did a superb job getting that all sorted.
  24. Thanks guys! I got the idea from reading this mostly.... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/79025-a-guide-to-using-the-silhouette-cameo-cutter/ Its an older model... but you get the idea of the possibilities... I'm finding I can be more creative, and repetitive shapes are much easier... Still requires a lot of hand work to finish, but symmetry is much easier. Thanks Bill! Part of me is contemplating making 2 bodies... one rusty... one not so rusty. That way after this show it can be a street rod. Even as a rot rod, the frame suspension and engine will be "finished" at least.
  25. I will be there for sure.... building a rat rod as we speak!
