Simulating Metal Flake Vinyl Upholstery
Impalow replied to Impalow's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I had a little bit of luck with this.... Duplicolor silver lacquer, nail polish silver with big flakes, and then some gloss acrylic clear. Managed to pull off the metal flake vinyl look pretty decent I think.... -
Thank you all for your comments! It's really hard to stay motivated in the summer.... But I managed to get some paint on the interior parts tonight... Duplicolor silver lacquer, nail polish silver with big flakes, and then some gloss acrylic clear. Managed to pull off the metal flake vinyl look pretty decent I think.... Still going to add some piping and more detail.

For good or bad, I am predicting this is the next wave of vehicle trend... if we are not already there. Just like in the 60s and early 70's, gassers were awesome, everyone wanted one.. they got crazier and crazier to the point they were so over the top they became the streetfreaks of the later 70's... Luckally this trend should be as short as before because the vehicles are so out there, not many people will take the leap. I just like to sit back and enjoy all the creativity.

That looks tough!! Just out of curiostiy how do the wire wheels in that kit look? Looking for a set of crosslaced wires for a future project..

Thanks guys! im pretty happy with it... still needs a lot of cleaning up.. but you can start to see the vision. I used the 1/12" sheet for this... I understand why this is .040 thick but i wish it wasnt, I am going to border the edges with some piping so that will hopefuly visually minimize that thickness some.

Finally some progress!! Got most of the interior roughed out.. Still aways to go, but all the big parts have been made. Made the roll bar: Then applied the evergreen tile texture to the seats: Then created the rear seat cover and accent: From there it was door panels and the dash..

Thank you all! Sadly i never got back to working on this over the weekend, but hopefully tonight i can get some good bench time in. Russ it was somewhere in the recommended range.... 10-12psi... I am using an old badger compressor with one of those cheap regulator/watertraps on it so its approximate. The airbrush is one of those $14.00 dual action gravity feed cheapos off ebay, im really suprised how well it works. Just barely cracked it back and built it up slowly.

Thanks everyone! I spent a couple hours tonight trying to tame the alclad dragon... This is my second time using it, and it's an improvement.. So I'm happy. I used the duplicolor gloss black enamel followed up with the duplicolor gloss crystal clear.. Both straight from the rattle can... Header in black: Header in alclad chrome! And some other parts cause I'm pretty proud of this one:

Datsun 510s
Impalow replied to Austin T's topic in 1:1 Reference Photos: Auto Shows, Personal vehicles (Cars and Trucks)
Here is my dads collection of these... He raced them in SCCA for many years, and i think at last count he has owned more that 50 in his life. Still we still own 2 of these. I have a 2dr body laying in his back yard that i plan on building in the next year or so. The 4dr and wagon we still have, the one on the left we sold on ebay and somehow it made its way to california and Taz Harvey ran it in the La Carrera PanAmerica and did very very well. Here are some photos when we owned it, the giant wing is actually from the steve millen 300z imsa car, so it was added as a conversation piece. Here I am in the blue neon chasing down (unsuccessfully) my dad and uncle in their 510s at a track day. My uncles car is a 2dr with the "boxer" style flares. Quite fun and quite fast. And finally this is my first car... Built it when i was 15-16.. wagon turned sedan delivery, hod rodded out way before it was cool 1996-1997 -
Thank You guys!! Finally got some primer sprayed and and the base coat of metal flake on the block and oil pan. This large flake silver is what im going to use for the interior to simulate the metal flake vinyl.

Simulating Metal Flake Vinyl Upholstery
Impalow replied to Impalow's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks bill! Yeah I'm talking about the large metallic flakes like a boat, or the vinyl seats on rides at the fair (you are right, tacky was the wrong word to use.. Haha) For some reason my picture didn't show up.. I will take a look at the one coat colors, that may be easier than multi step fingernail polish. I used the pearl powder in dullcoat on my last interior and it came out awesome, perfect sheen.. This is for a wild gasser so I want that fair ride/ 50s diner look... My main worry with the metalflake I think is the gloss, I don't want it to look like a gloss cleared an entire model. -
I will also be watching... I have had my eyes on that kit.

Thanks guys! This one is a lot of fun to work on.. and gets more insane with each additional part. I would really like to say i have some crazy trick that made it really easy... but i dont.. I made the intake flanges out of .020 sheet, then cut off 8 pieces of .080 round rod, square cut all the same length. I measured and marked the ports onto the flanges. then glued the rod onto the flanges with a liberal amount of the tamiya thin glue. While they were drying i kept fiddiling with them until they were visually straight and centered on the flange. Once I let the glue dry really really well... I used CA glue to temporarily glue the flange flat on the head. Then I used sanding stick to make sure all of the tubes the same length and that the top was at the correct angle. Once that was done, I drilled the hole for the throttle shaft and took my 3/16" hole punch to some .010 styrene. Those 3/16 disks were glued to the top of each tube to simulate the flanges. I added detail with bolts heads from some .020 hex rod and the injection ports from .040 rod. Thats pretty much the entire story.

And then i got bored with the chassis so i started on the engine last night... Scratchbuilt the fined valley pan cover... Kit part is on the left, in the kits defense the engine is from the AMT parts pack, and made to have a blower. Then the intake.. only one done so far. Steering linkage and moontank mount added... still needs some tweaking. but it is there.
