Oh, well I suppose I should have said, "Retarder is used to slow down drying time..." Better? -

Hmmm... no Safeway in the area... but I did see it was available at Amazon, and CVS. So, I should be all set! Thanks! -
It looks great, but you should've left off the gold body spray - it's way too much.

Sorry to go off-topic here, but the best I've found (and it's really cheap at the local drug store) is 91% - where do you get your 99%? -

I use a food dehydrator, and it really speeds up the curing process of hobby paints, which is great because the paint isn't soft and won't take fingerprints. However, the new automotive paints (acrylic enamels and acrylic lacquers) do NOT like the food dehydrator! I suppose it's logical, that they have been formulated for air-drying, but I think what happens is that it instantly dries the outside layer, which makes it more difficult to cure the inside layers, leaving the finish soft. Regarding durability of Vallejo paints - it's very possible that I was expecting the metallics to be more durable because they dry very shiny. However, now that I've read comments about the paint requiring a topcoat, that they wore off too easily - I never thought they would NEED a protective finish! -

Gorgeous! Is this the AMT kit that was just released, or had you been holding onto one? Are those headers and pipes included in the kit? Awesome!

Gorgeous! Beautiful paint job - almost looks like "black chrome" when the light hits it from the side. I may have to buy one - sure do hope I can before Modelhaus calls it quits...

Painted trim vs. BMF
fseva replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll give it a shot! Thanks Tom! -
I have the Anthem, and here's why it's so versatile - it comes with a .75mm needle/nozzle - to compare, the Patriot comes with a .5mm n/n, and consequently you have to thin your paints slightly more to get them to atomize properly with the smaller n/n. Now, are you sure you want a siphon-feed airbrush? This can come in really handy when you know you'll be airbrushing a lot of paint in one session - too much for a single gravity cup - you can attach lots of different size bottles to the Anthem, and even change colors just by changing bottles (of course, you should blow out the excess paint from the inner workings between each color change as well).

It could also be the "store sellers" who are REQUIRED to make a certain number of listings per month... all they have to do is devote a good number of items to the cause, mark them up so high that they can't possibly sell, and auto-relist them. Sure would take the pressure off!

Painted trim vs. BMF

You know, I invested in 100 surgical #11s just for this purpose - is that overkill? Is it so sharp, it's digging in way too much? -

In your pictorial, I noticed that you gave the strip a slight twist away from pure flat parallel - is that intentional? -

I do believe you guys were right - I had a bad sheet of foil! I just went down to the hobby room and practiced removing sections from a brand new sheet, and what I found is that if I did it the old way (grasping it at the end and pulling up on it), it would still wrinkle... but not as much... and I used the suggestion of keeping the foil as close to parallel as possible - even using my free hand to keep the foil from lifting too far ahead, I got virtually no wrinkles! Thanks guys! -

Do you grab hold of just a corner and pull? I have always worked the whole side off and then grabbed the foil all the way across the piece I've cut out. Perhaps that's why I'm getting the wrinkling... and yet, I seem to recall that pulling at just one corner led to breaks in the foil... -

Shoot - I do that all the time, and the wrinkles always appear. -

Yes, but is this a hobbyist product delivered in small affordable quantities? We've all seen the systems requiring chemical baths, etc., and for rechroming a 1:25 bumper, there is no way I'm going to invest that much money! -

I saw where you corrected push to pull, and now I can see that this is something I have never tried - I will pull it over itself and see if the wrinkles stay away! Thanks! -

Hmmm... that's basically what I do, but with the wrinkles in the foil taking place during the "pull"... -

I personally prefer Tamiya's cotton swabs - the medium size with the tight pointed tip is great for getting into corners, etc. -

I tried Alclad lots of times, and I never got the durability you would get with BMF. It just will rub right off during handling. And consider the time spent in prepping the surface, as well as masking. Neither is a big time-saver.
